I really like the sentiment here. "Even if you practically live on your computer, you might not know basic pop culture!" Yeah, people who spends all their time online are really known for having their finger on the pulse of what's hot right now.

The radio at work is from the mid 80's and only picks up one FM station that isn't NPR reliably and it plays him at least twice an hour. That's my reason for disliking that bastard. At least he has two songs out now and it's not just Shape of You forever and ever.

So you're saying following pop music is a moral obligation??

Exploration is ill-advised.
Everyone now has access to a portable music player with a huge capacity, and the ability to access and download any of the world's variety of music to play at their leisure. At this point, you're the weird one for assuming everyone listens to the radio, let alone can name flash-in-the-pan modern artists. The shared experience of popular music may well be coming to an end.

It's strange, I remember reading something that said Nirvana would probably be the last superstar-phenomenon-band-thing, and yet there has clearly still been a trend of huge pop stars since. Seems like everyone predicts the end of the single pop mainstream but it hasn't happened yet?

I saw him on Top Gear and Buzzcocks and a few other shows and he always comes across as a genuinely nice guy, but his music is so blandly inoffensive and calculated for maximum marketability that I can't help but harbor some serious doubts about that persona.

Am I so out of touch that I really don't recognize any of the bands that are popular right now?

No, it's the industry that's becoming irrelevant.

Gumbel2Gumbel
Apr 28, 2010

It's not really that things aren't popular, it's that even the biggest hits today are not nearly as popular on their own as they used to be. There are just a lot more things competing for attention these days.

There was a really good article I read but can't find that showed Game of Thrones yesterday had like 16 million viewers, and ER season 3 first episode had over 40 million.
