FORUMS NO.1 SLEEPY DAWGS MEMESTER

Screaming Idiot posted:

If you were literally in New York when it happened, sure, freak out about it, it's a big event. But if you're in Bumfuck, Kentucky or Goatballs, Arkansas then there is no reason not to get on with your day after the shock wears off. Every day something horrible happens around the world, sometimes stuff worse than 9/11, but for some reason most Americans don't give a crap about any of it.

An atrocity is an atrocity, but the fact we as a country went insane over it is one of the big reasons why we have an anthropomorphic bag of Cheetoh vomit with a combover in charge of our nuclear arsenal. Bin Laden is cackling his rear end off at the bottom of the ocean.

People didn't know it was over or what else was planned. The years after sure, but day of, come on man. First foreign attack on American soil since Attu during WWII is worthy of more than a shrug.

An accurate statement from an american perspective.

It's the same basically anywhere: people don't give a poo poo about stuff that doesn't affect them directly. The DPRK could reduce South Korea to a glowing hole in the earth and upon seeing the headline "Everyone in South Korea is loving Dead" most people in America, Canada, Australia, or anywhere in Europe would think "oh no that's terrible" but would only read enough of the article to find out that their country, specifically, was not planning to go to war over it before their eyes glazed over and rolled off of the page and onto pornography or something.

Don't forget, where America is concerned, the trip to the comment section to see what the ratio of people demanding we intervene, demanding we not intervene, bitching us out for not having done something (what, exactly? Anything!) sooner, and bitching us out for no doubt being at fault for it happening is. :nallears:

Comics are just like watching other people play with your favorite toy in weirder and weirder scenarios.

It's so stupid that you guys 1) like them and 2) are completely okay with a Joker getting raped by a whale comic but no its not part of the real universe it's a different one. Like 75% of the industry is covered by the "thankfully, it was just a dream" clause.

Also they're a gateway drug to anime.

I know it's confusing that most of the 9/11 hijackers were Saudi Arabian but we did not go to war with them, no. Some of you said Russia but that was a couple decades later. A worrisome number of you said France? Was that just a pure guess? I have no idea where that came from. There were even a few "Canada" answers. I know Canada doesn't exist anymore but that wasn't because of us."

If America doesn't care when people around the world are murdered or tortured or oppressed, why should we care any more when it happens here? It seems hypocritical to gnash our teeth and wail when something happens here when the exact same thing happens everywhere else -- and sometimes it's our people doing it.

I'm not saying we shouldn't feel empathy. I'm saying we should feel every bit as shocked and horrified when tragedy strikes regardless of the location.

There's a difference between being outraged and feeling horrified, though. More people should be outraged at what's going on around the world every day, but they're never going to feel the way they feel about stuff that happens closer to home. And to some extent probably can't. It'd be paralyzing.

people don't, and won't ever care all that much about what happens to people far away that they haven't met and know little about

people currently spend most of their days looking at a screen that can and does provide them with up to the minute information about the horrible things happening to people that are far away, often in video form, and they still don't care

the only reason they care about things that happen in their country is because they're worried it might affect them or people they actually know and have met, if you erected a giant everything-proof shield around Ohio that made them perfectly safe forever I'm certain that you could have nazis lining people up against the outside of the shield and shooting them and the most emotional response you'd get out of the people in Ohio would be "oh dear, someone ought to put a stop to that"

The Great War was cooking a lot earlier than Franz Ferdinand.

You're right in that they're symbolic events. Like the Maine.

Remember the Maine? Remember the Alamo? Just symbolic events that let the pressure off so we could kill each other in a civilized fashion, with a pretext.

Screaming Idiot is, well, an idiot but there is a germ of a point in there. I lived in the Tri-State during 9/11 and had classmates who lost their parents at the WTC. I could smell the bodies on the wind for a week. Another friend did a Nick News roundtable because he lived near the WTC at the time. It was a "Big Deal." Even then no one was afraid of some imminent second strike or anything like that--we had this collective sense it was a fluke tragedy that was going to have massive fallout. When Bush and all the media immediately started pushing the "Hey don't kill brown people you think might be Muslims you backwater dumbasses" PSAs we were relieved because it indicated a sense of sanity.

So seeing people out in the heartland acting like there were there, or literally crying 16 years later despite knowing no one from the East Coast let alone NYC.... yeah that's insane and those people need to take a big heaping cup of "Get the gently caress over it" with a chaser of "basic human history." loving panicky Baby Boomer Red Dawn-obsessed clownshits.
