Embiid putting up per 36 numbers like 48 and 17 in his first “competitive “ game back seems to be something that we won’t be allowed to have for long in this, the timeline where nothing good ever happens

I mean the sheer hubris of that contract...

Kevman needs to tell us the story of how he brought a mountain of cocaine to Quinn Snyder and asked him to explain slow basketball and sneering.

As for win prediction stats, I believe 3PM had been a good indicator the last few years, but that is very regressive. Three pointers made are good because good teams are good at three pointers right now. A few years ago defensive rebounding was very important. Basketball is very fluid.

Last year the second best offense in the league has the 4th least amount of movement.

It's a bit interesting to consider.

The cliche is that every other guy who's drafted has been the best player on every team he's ever played on. Passing when you are the top man who gets the ball in every possession is quite different from spurs/warriors/euro ping pong 5 man corner triangle whatever hybrid passing.

If we use stanley johnson, a guy who was thought to have ability to 'playmake' we see he can pass, but only after dribbling in place for 4 seconds and essentially making his pass worthless, and maybe other guys can pass well but they're so low on the totem pole that if they get the ball they're not in place for a useful pass.

There are lots of passes, maybe more than shots. And when you combine the fact that you can weave several types of passing and movement together you get into even deeper waters.

It's not wild to claim that the Warriors couldn't run their hybrid triangle without amazing shooters, pfs who can handle the ball and orginally a center who was a great passer. It's not easy.

All the people who defend westbrook's passing are defending his end of the shot clock crazy zing pass to a shooter or a roller. That is something else. We need more words for passing. We need to develop an entire vocabulary if we every want random NBA fans to understand what's going on.

Just saying you need to pass and move is extremely simplistic and sometimes completely incorrect. See: this clip of Kyle Anderson moving around for no reason and loving up the an easy corner shot

Another question on my mind... Is it possible to statistically isolate the effects of playing on the second night of a back to back against a team playing with a day's rest or more? Does it have a larger (statistical) effect on a single game's outcome than, say, playing an away game? Or is it even possible to isolate those variables.

What about length of rest prior to the game, say, for example, in the last 10 years, in games where a team on 3 days rest played a team on 1 days rest, what percentage of the games were won by the 3 day team vs the 1 day team? and the various permutations of this situation? What about when controlling for the influence of home vs away?

Is there anyone on the net doing this kind of analysis?

THE MOST EXCITING MASCOT IN THE LAST 4000 YEARS OF COLLEGE SPORTS

Similar to Kevman, I personally set up the Cavs' recent run of success. While playing slots at the casino in Cleveland, Dan Gilbert walled the floor to see if everyone was having a good time. I was only down $300 at this point so I said yeah, and he said great. I said hey Mr Gilbert, I have an idea for fixing the Cavs. He said ok. I said LeBron James is a free agent, he's from the area, and even used to play here previously. He's good at basketball and you should sign him. The rest is history

Later after the 2016 Finals, Gilbert called me up and said thanks for the tip and as a reward set me up with a great 73% rate on my mortgage as a laugh at the Warriors victories from the regular season

Right now everyone is chasing Steph's team (the golden state warriors), or planning/praying for if/when that team loses key components. We're just about to start a season where several teams have made big moves to try and challenge them (Chris Paul to the Rockets, Melo and Paul George to OKC, etc, old Mvpmen to the Cavs) There are a lot of young talented players blossoming right now. The league is a very fun place, I'd recommended getting twitter to keep up on drama/news. Follow Shea Serrano and Adrian Wojnarowski to start with, that's a good yin/yang of Fun Basketball Culture and Basketball Scoops.

Absolutely. What I was getting at with my comparison of Golden State and Houston, lots of movement vs very little movement, is that the former relies on off ball screens while the latter relies on ball screens. Since there are more players without the ball than with the ball, teams that utilize off ball screens will by necessity have more movement than pick and roll heavy teams. Movement alone isn't necessarily good or bad.

The NBA has two conferences. The Western Conference is awesome and filled with exciting teams, making the playoffs an entertaining bloodbath. The Eastern Conference is poo poo and only exists because Lebron James hasn‘t joined the Lakers yet.

Real answer: I don't know if there is anything that starts from the very ground up like that. We can help fill in specific knowledge gaps, though! Do you want to start with rules of the game, high-level offensive/defensive strategy, or the CBA (collective bargaining agreement, i.e. contractual rules)?

As a fellow euro that got way into basketball about 10 years ago the best advice I can give you is just to watch a lot of games. The point where you start recognizing individual players and start to gravitate towards certain teams is when you'll know the sport has its hooks in you.

The great thing about the NBA is the fact that a lot of players are very charismatic and outspoken which creates a lot of drama. You'll pick up on that just by reading this thread.

As for basic rule stuff don't be afraid to ask questions, people here are very helpful. It took me longer then I'm willing to admit to figure out what charging and blocking fouls are.
