I could almost swear that 'insufferably smug and obnoxious tech billionaire' is already a stock character. Most of them tend to be Steve Jobs in his younger days, sometimes mashed up with Zuckerberg and/or Elon Musk, and the stereotypical obnoxious Silicon Valley techie. It's a bit of a moving target as stereotypes go, back in the 90s and early 00s it was Bill Gates and occasionally Stephen Hawking. (and Steve Jobs) Also definitely a Google touch to his corporation, see the rainbow desk and playground facilities.

Mark Beaks still seems too human and relatable for a tech billionaire. They got too caught up in their "Millennials do the Darnedest Things" bit. Gladstone Gander is the Worst in the comics. All of Donald's greed, none of his work ethic, and yet he's always fine.

Though to be fair Gladstone is not too greedy. Scrooge actually thinks he would make a better heir then Donald in that he would not squander his fortune. But Gladstone's laziness and way of life offends him to the very core.

I remember reading a comic years back where Scrooge gives Donald and Gladstone enough money to each start up their own business to see who could make a bigger success of it, and thus be named his heir. I vaguely recall Donald working his rear end off but just loving up every step of the way, while Gladstone just kinda sat in his hammock all day as business opportunities literally fell into his lap (a guy parachutes into his yard and tells him his plane full of expensive merchandise just blew up, and Gladstone makes a killing shorting the stock or something). In the end Scrooge realizes that Donald's temper prevents him from succeeding while Gladstone's success is actually putting a dent in SCROOGE's profits, and that he has to cut them both off. From memory it ends with him giving them both their own dream businesses, safe in the knowledge that Donald will drink up all his stock (he runs a soda company I think) while Gladstone's laziness will be too much for even his luck to make a success of a comic book store. There's a great final panel of Gladstone happily reading comics at the counter and ignoring an irate customer he can't be bothered to serve Jerusalem fucked around with this message at 06:58 on Oct 14, 2017 |

Gladstone seems funny in that he's barely a villain, and not really a bad person (usually), just the natural result of someone who has absolutely everything in life go his way. He'll even take advantage of his luck to save people in a pinch. He just grinds the gears of both Donald and Scrooge because he's the antithesis to both.

I would never consider Gladstone a villain, but more of a foil for Donald. Half the time he's oblivious as to how obnoxious he's being. That comic is also an early Don Rosa story. The final gag is even better because he's in charge of Gladstone Comics, which was the real life US publisher of Disney comics back in the mid-late 80s.

Honestly I can't stand Gladstone, they most of the time are TOO successful at making him obnoxious, which combined with him rarely ever losing in a way that he would actually care about due to his luck and laziness just makes any story with him in it a drag to read

I remember a fun little story were Donald and the Nephews got a in a competition with Gladstone to find some treasure or something that was buried in a beach. Which highlighted one of the few flaws Gladstone had with his luck. Because of how unambitious and lazy Gladstone is he is quick to give up whenever his luck does not just hand him what he wants. During the search Gladstone just decides to lay down on the beach and wait for the treasure to fall into his hands. While Donald and the Nephews dig and search fruitlessly. Eventually Gladstone gives up tired of waiting figuring it must be somewhere else. The Nephews actually wonder why Gladstone's luck had not allowed him to find the treasure. Then realize were Gladstone was sitting was the only place they had not checked in the area. And sure enough Gladstone had been sitting on the treasure the whole time, but was too lazy to actually check.

The end of the preview posted above had him looking concerned/worried as Donald stormed off. I imagine he probably admires Donald and wants to impress him, but goes about it wrong because he always relies on his luck to make it happen.

Eventually, Paperinik tricks him into striking by saying he's found a method that would allow him to easily find and capture him every time; the villain counters, ties Paperinik up, and takes off Paperinik's mask to unveil Donald... which is exactly as he wanted because Gladstone and Fethry show up in Paperinik costumes at that moment (and deliberately unmask themselves), distracting him, giving Donald enough time to free himself and all three effectively make use of the time to surprise and recapture the villain. And of course, even after he became known for his luck, Carl Barks still wrote Donald vs. Gladstone stories where Gladstone had to get the upperhand through sabotaging Donald's efforts, no relying on his luck there. Of course, this aspect of Gladstone appears very very rarely nowadays and the kind of work Gladstone would do to sabotage Donald in those stories are probably things that modern-day Gladstone would find beneath him (in that it relies on him doing work and not his god-given luck making everything fall into place).

There're two cool stories I remembered where Gladstone wasn't an insufferable jerk. One is a Don Rosa story of the celebration of Scrooge being in Duckburg for 50 years. While Scrooge was chasing Blackheart Beagle on top of Coot Statue, Gladstone helped out by asking the chief of police to put out a reward for the capture of Blackheart Beagle. The chief did, and Gladstone's luck worked its magic. The other is where Magica tries to infiltrate Scrooge's money bin by disguising herself and becoming a love interest to Gladstone. IIRC, the two did genuinely care for each other but Magica broke it off since she didn't want to keep up the lie, and we see Gladstone depressed because his luck didn't help him. MonsterEnvy posted:Oh and also a few clips featuring Mark Beaks. He is as insufferable as I imagined him to be. Interesting. There's a short moment where he stuttered in his speech to Huey and Dewey that makes me think he's hiding a lot of insecurities behind that pompous persona.

Wait, guest star? Aw, Gladstone is only going to appear in that one episode? I suppose it's understandable given that you don't want to stretch the main cast too much, but still. I would have liked for him to be a secondary character that shows up from time to time.
