There was a period after Pan's Labyrinth came out where interest piqued for a year and change, but in general Americans are really bad at history.

The kind of people who are on Jeopardy know about, like, Hemingway and Guernica, but we don't study the Spanish Civil War in school, so not so much about causes and results.

Yeah but a Spanish-sounding name and the word "republican" in the clue kind of narrows it down so that even a passing knowledge that it even happened should have gotten them to the answer.

I agree, I was saying to my husband that for the last couple weeks it seems like it's usually been more of a contest of who's been the least dumb rather than the smartest.

For the Jack White clue, supposedly it's harder for the contestants to see the monitor that has video clues than it is for the audience at home to see them. She didn't even know there was a picture until after she answered.

Given how lame some answers have been, it seems this year's contestants hold to the notion "they have memorized a ton of stuff, but don't actually KNOW much".

I notice they work in references to holidays in episodes that air right before or after: maybe they could try something different and predict when Trump will do something despicable?

Trump's Twitter: A category based on what he tweeted the morning of taping. Daily double reserved for a tweet when everyone's in the studio.

Taping delay is too great, holidays are predictable months or years in advance while despicable Trump acts are not (OK, predicting that he'll do something despicable is a pretty safe bet, but you can't get specific enough to riff on it).

I think I learned that the Spanish Civil War happened from a comic book in high school, so naturally I will remember it to my dying day.

Well, IMO they've officially "jumped the shark" on yesterday's show with that "young jerk" show tie-in. I just spun the PVR through the entire thing.

My wish for 2018 is for the show to bring back some actual intelligent contestants instead of folks who appear to have "graduated" from some Jeopardy crash-course institute.

aside: I'm starting to suspect that there must be such things. There are/were SAT mills in the USA, so Jeopardy mills must also exist, correct? Because there are some really lame contestants lately that seem to have a bunch of stuff memorized, but who don't actually seem to KNOW much of anything.

She was the contestant last November's Tournament of Champions who got incredibly frustrated with her Double Jeopardy performance (she went into Final with $2,000, like $13,000 behind the other two guys), made it clear visibly that she was pissed off, and prompted three pages of discussion here of people saying "lol she was having a panic attack."

Thanks!! I'm actually super excited, I never really imagined that I would actually get an audition, especially since IIRC the test was so long ago, I just kind of chalked it up to "ok yeah maybe next year... again".

I honestly wouldn't go too crazy studying for your audition. You already passed one test, the one at the audition is just to make sure you didn't cheat. Focus more on speaking up, buzzing, and being the most outgoing, interesting version of yourself.

Imo the in-person written test is significantly harder than the online test and the show itself. Sorry ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's definitely harder than the show, it's specifically the most difficult material. I found it about as difficult as the online test. YMMV.

I didn't notice any difference in difficulty between the two tests.

But yeah, zakharov's advice for practicing the buzzer and feeling comfortable on camera is on point. Good luck to you, and I also hope you meet Maggie. Glenn and Corina are cool too.

Cool, thanks for the advice, guys!

My score for this year's online test was higher than any of the others I've ever taken by around 6-7 right answers, so I hope I don't totally bomb the audition one :ohdear:

I'll be ok with being comfortable on camera; I was on my high school's Reach for the Top team, which is basically Canadian high school Jeopardy (but in team format) so I've done that part of it before, even if it was like 10 years ago.

They sometimes send a second round of they have open spots. There's random selection also, not everyone who does well gets an invite.

This. They had to reschedule my original audition (on the same day, just earlier) because I needed to get back to them whether or not my professor would let me miss class for it (of course he did when he found out what it was for). If slots open up, they'll let you know.

Also, Jeopardy contestant get well video for Trebek (that I forgot to make a picture for, dammit!) apparently was sent to Maggie the first day that he was back in the office after surgery. They posted it on their Facebook too, and the response from Alex was pretty good.
