One last thing - Day 1's deadline will be at 8 PM on 02-JAN-2018. Since it's not only a weekend but a holiday weekend at that, the posting requirement is lowered to 5 posts during the first game day to avoid being ON NOTICE. It'll be back at 10 posts/day on subsequent days.

Here are the threads for each side - from here on out, please ONLY post in your own thread! Thank you all for your patience, and good luck!

The sun rose harshly the next morning over the Alamo, as the Mexican conquerors gathered with the remaining Texans. Pancho Villa stood upon the steps of the central structure, surveying them one and all.

First, his proud and stalwart allies - by his side, they had rooted out every Texan spy, won time and again on the battlefield, and fought - bled - died - all in the name of one foolish man's dream for a better tomorrow. He swore a vow to himself, silent but true - whatever it took, he would ensure that each of his brave soldiers was rewarded fairly for their faith in him.

quote:

Everyone loves a good bargain! And that's what you aim to deliver - premium products at low prices. Everyone knows that the earth's full of good natural stuff, anyhow - why not make use of it? Effectiveness (mostly) guaranteed!
Flying Leatherman, aka Eufemia, MEXICAN TOWN-aligned Medic, survived to see victory!

quote:

Pah. Your abuela always said you'd need to find a good man to help with the heavy lifting around the house. Well, you sure proved her wrong, didn't you? Now here you are, holding down a one-woman cooking operation for Pancho Villa himself - or at least you were, till this war. Hopefully it gets over with good and fast!
Hal Incandenza, aka Raquel, MEXICAN TOWN-aligned Shiner, survived to see victory!

quote:

You take care of your children, no doubt about it. So what if they're furry and a little smelly and spit a whole lot? You understand what your alpacas are saying to you, just like if you were listening to anyone else! They seem willing to help out, so you've brought a few of them with you - surely they'll make a difference.
IllegallySober, aka Marcos, MEXICAN TOWN-aligned Shiner, survived to see victory!

quote:

Back in the day, you used to do terrible business. You could never keep your shelves stocked with the right products - you'd always guess wrong on the next popular trend, and be left in the dust by the other shopkeeps in town. But then along came good old Shine - just one sip, and the future became crystal-clear to you. No more empty shelves!
Kashuno, aka Severo, MEXICAN TOWN-aligned Scout, survived to see victory!

quote:

Seeking out thrills is the only way that you can keep life interesting. Tossing cards on the table, rolling dice, and more - all of that really gets your blood pumping! Thing is, you can only clean out people so many times before they stop playing with you. But luckily for you, this whole war is really just another high-stakes gamble with your life on the line! How EXCITING!
Murmur Twin, aka Reinaldo, MEXICAN TOWN-aligned Scout, survived to see victory!

quote:

Farming is easy. All you have to do is know in advance when the sun will come out, or when it'll rain for days on end. Child's play for you - at least with the help of Shine!
SalTheBard, aka Marius, MEXICAN TOWN-aligned Scout, survived to see victory!

quote:

Growing up, you saw some tough stuff. The details aren't important, but what matters is this: after a certain point you told yourself that you were done running away. Since then - with a little help from Shine - you've never let yourself be afraid like you once were. Now that you're fighting with others, you figure the least you can do is pass on a little of what you learned. Hopefully they'll take to it easier than you did.
Slaan, aka Lupita, MEXICAN TOWN-aligned Heavy, survived to see victory!

quote:

La Chupacabra, dreaded bloodsucker! Your abuela told you all sorts of stories about it growing up, leaving you with many sweat-soaked nights of trying to fend off the resulting nightmares. Naturally, you imagine her ghost was right there laughing at you when you had your first drink of Shine and felt the changes starting to come over you...
The Lord of Hats, aka Margareta, MEXICAN TOWN-aligned Shiner, survived to see victory!
Additional Epilogue: https://lpix.org/sslptest/index.php?id=150182

quote:

You used to enjoy playing cards, but Shine took that away from you. Nowadays, it's clear as day to see who's holding pocket aces, and who's bluffing on a trash hand. Part of you regrets that loss, but it's a very quiet and easily stifled bit. But now with the new war, perhaps your Shine-gifted abilities can see some proper use.
Tobbs Gnawed, aka Andres, MEXICAN TOWN-aligned Scout, survived to see victory!

quote:

Fire is the great equalizer. Everything burns, given enough time - men, women, bullets, money - even water burns away in the end. All you want is for more people to understand and appreciate its incredible power - even if that means you have to convince them with practical examples.
Truth Quark, aka Poncio, MEXICAN TOWN-aligned Light, survived to see victory!

~~~
As for the others - the Texans had fought bravely, to be sure. They very nearly matched him upon the battlefield, despite his finest tactics and powerful armies. Even if they had stood in the way of his dream, their bravery under fire was... commendable. It would be a shame to execute them, one and all - especially upon a beautiful morning like this.
...But examples needed to be made - for if he showed too much weakness now, he would never be able to swear honestly to himself that he could do whatever it took to defend his new home in the years to come.
As his soldiers dragged the Texan prisoners forward, Villa took the measure of each in turn with a calculating eye. "The time to choose is now. I offer you a place at my side, and the honor of sharing my dream. The alternative - you shall be ready and waiting to welcome your former governor when she arrives at her final destination. Who will stand with me?"
Three prisoners stepped forward, faces drawn with determination. He shook their hands one by one, wondering if he was simply leaving wounds that would fester over time.
They never saw you coming. No, that's literal - you had to try enlisting three separate times before they actually saw you doing it. You can't help it though - blending in just makes life so much easier. If people don't see you, they can't blame you for things going wrong!
:sweatdrop: Tired Moritz, aka Travers, TEXAN TOWN-aligned Tactician, will live on as a member of the Villistas! :sweatdrop:
Travelers complain about the heat when they pass through. Pssh. They haven't seen anything yet. Out in the glorious wasteland of Texas, with only God as your companion in the wilderness and the sun beating down upon you with a flask of Shine by your side - that's the only time when you feel truly alive.
:sweatdrop: Retro Futurist, aka Dutch, TEXAN TOWN-aligned Scout, will live on as a member of the Villistas! :sweatdrop:
One prisoner chose the most difficult route of all, and he saluted her for standing by her convictions. As the guns rolled one more time, Villa said a silent prayer for her eternal soul.
quote:
When you were little, you were always too short to reach the stuff on the high shelves - you had to whine and beg your older brother to get stuff down for you. But look at little miss Marcia now - one drink and you can practically reach the clouds!
:gibs: tpink, aka Marcia, TEXAN TOWN-aligned Scout, was executed at sunrise by the conquering army! :gibs:
But what of the remaining prisoners? That hadn't been all of them, had it?
"Sir! Lo siento, but we have a problem! Some of the prisoners - they are gone! The wall was broken down, like it was kicked down by something massive! All that was left in their cells... was this note."
Villa took the short note and read it start to finish, smoothing his moustache down to conceal the slight flicker of a grin that threatened to creep across his face. '100% certain he couldn't abandon them in the end,' eh? He should have expected nothing less. "Let them go - I want all my troops here to celebrate our victory. If a few escape to tell the tale of what has transpired here - so be it."
quote:
They said a woman could never be a boat captain - let alone a black woman. They said you'd never amount to anything other than a mama to a bunch of disorderly kids. Even if the war's taken you away from your precious ship, you still aim to do your part for sweet old Texas.
:byewhore: peramene, aka Annie, TEXAN TOWN-aligned Heavy, escaped to see another sunrise - with a little help! :byewhore:
:byewhore: iajanus, aka Gerard, TEXAN TOWN-aligned Tactician, escaped to see another sunrise - with a little help! :byewhore:
Pancho Villa turned to the deposed governor, who had stood silently behind him - under heavy guard, of course - this whole time, watching the grim proceedings. He doffed his hat to her one final time. "You fought bravely, but your time has come. Believe me that I say this truly - it was a honor to face a foe like yourself on the battlefield." He received no response in turn, other than a stony gaze. Quirking one eyebrow, he watched as his soldiers escorted her before the firing line and secured her in place. "What is this? No final words of inspiration? Nothing to leave my soldiers quaking in their boots, dreading your vengeance from the beyond?"
"I've already left my final words to the one who deserves to hear them the most. As for you, Punchy Pancho..."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGF4ibgcHQE
"We'll meet again someday, on the other side. And when we do... you best believe I'll get the first shot in. Now, do what you gotta, and give me my peace."
Villa nodded and stepped away, bowing his head in respect as Ma Feruguson bravely faced her death head on - just like she always had. As the gunners leveled their rifles one last time, a soft song came to her lips unbidden.
"The stars at night are big and bright,
Deep in the heart of Texas.
The prairie sky is wide and high,
Deep in the heart of Texas.
The sage in bloom is like perfume,
Deep in the heart of Texas.
Reminds me of the one that I love,
Deep in the heart of Texas..."
~~~

Pancho Villa let out a long-held sigh as the echoes of gunfire died away, and turned slightly to look at the other two who had been watching the proceedings this whole time - hidden from view. "As for you - you were instrumental in my victory. Anything you want that is within my power to provide, is yours."

quote:

Ribbit. You're not weird like people say. Ribbit. You just have a different perspective on the world. Ribbit. Especially when you're drinking. Ribbit. It's kind of a nice feeling. Ribbit. Plus, if anyone looks at you funny, you can just tear their head right off with your tongue. Ribbit.
:twisted: Mithross, aka Royce, TEXAN SCUM-aligned Tactician, has successfully brought the Texans down from within! :twisted:

"I must ask, though - that letter you carry. I see it is written in a familiar hand. Know that I ask you this with the utmost respect, deserving of your accomplishments. ...Is there anything I should know about its contents?"

quote:

My dearest, Arnold

I hope you've followed my last instructions. Keep going till you're out of Texas. Forget the others, who knows who can be trusted out of the lot that's left. Please pass on the rest of these pages, they detail my notes on what intelligence we've managed to gather. And I've had one last go at writing a persuasive speech. Celaya must be shut down in force. They can't just leave it up to the local pissheads at the border to stop them. But once this country pulls its finger out, that Punchy Poncho's moment in the sun will be over. I want you to live to see that day for me.

I have to admit, here as our end gets ever closer, I can't help but idly wonder if even you were in on it. Don't mean nothing by it, though. Just take it as a compliment, it means your competence sometimes felt too good to be true. Whichever side you were on, you did a drat good job. Through all the hell we went through out here, it was always an honour and a pleasure to have you by my side.

YOLO,
Ma

Whatever the quiet man's reply to Villa's question was, it is just one of many small things lost to history.

quote:

Selling the freshest stuff is important. People won't buy your goods if they're not nice and new-looking! But while you're happy to take their money, you never made any promises about what happens after it leaves your hands. Typical wear and tear, you see! So what if it wears out just a bit faster than normal?
:twisted: Natural 20, aka Arnold, TEXAN SCUM-aligned Medic, has successfully brought the Texans down from within! :twisted:

~~~
In the wake of the Third Battle for the Alamo, things continued to change. Pancho Villa continued his path of conquest for a time, seizing a massive swath of what was once the western United States. The U.S. Army eventually mobilized enough of its forces to bring him to a halt - but the intervention of Canadian forces shocked the world, coming to the Villistas' defense! As the American and Mexican government reeled in surprise, Pancho Villa declared that he was making a clean break. He was not conquering for the corrupt Mexican government, unchanged by its revolution - nothing of the sort. His only aim was to create a new home where brave soldiers like himself could live in peace, unhindered by petty things.
And thus, Nuevo Villa - New Home - spanning west from what was once Texas to what would eventually have been Montana, was born.
Shine has left a permanent mark on the world in the way that nobody can ignore any further. No one knows what changes it will bring next, but one thing is for certain - Shine always has a way of keeping life interesting. :cheers:
Thanks:
Huge thanks to Max and Captain Foo - this game was a monster to write and run, and I sincerely couldn't have done it without them. They saved me from a LOT of stupid decisions!
Big thanks to Bifauxnen and King Burgundy for taking on the responsibility of leadership with gusto, and both independently offering to write confessionals for a more fun experience all around.
Huge thanks to everyone else who played and continued to read along posthumously - your enthusiasm is what keeps me creating these games.
Last but not least, this game would not have happened without Ecco and Asiina's excellent work running The Conquest of Qal, and making all their documentation available for me to heavily leverage while setting this one up.
Feedback - For Myself and Others:
I know people have many thoughts about this game - so do I! In a game this size, mistakes and tough decisions can and did happen - minor ones that we rectified to the best of our ability as mods. I am 100% open to your feedback and want to have a good postgame discussion, but please remember to be mindful of other players when discussing what happened during the game. Everyone did their best, no matter what the outcome was!
I think that's about all for now. One last time...
Hi all,
It was very fun modding this game. Shout to Pod for putting all the systems together, Asiina and Ecco for piloting this venture in the Qal game that we took a lot of inspiration from, and Foo for being an excellent co-mod to chat with.
I only have two end-game thoughts.
1: Inf. I'm surprised I'm writing about him again, given that I thought I had been rather final about him in Contact in Cudlaty where he similarly had some lovely social play and abandoned the game after day 2, leaving his fellow scum mates holding the bag while he played the new Mario game (literally.) I'm just going to repost what I said at the end of that game:
Max posted:
A final note on Inf:
You’ll see in the scum chat that Inf said on night 2 that he was going to not give a poo poo about the game since Mario was coming out, and subsequently followed through on this, abandoning the game. This is not the first time he’s done this. I had hoped that his break from games would have served him well and that we may have seen him come back with a better attitude towards this community. He didn’t though, so I’m going to go ahead and say that I’m blacklisting him.
I was A) Obviously annoyed that he just up and left the game for no reason, and B) Frustrated at his continued aggressively lovely social play with everyone else. I too often find myself annoyed at his approach to interactions in these games and feels he often goes too far. I had wanted to call it out sooner, but that would be wildly inappropriate as a mod to do since I can’t really give any credence to a fight going on in thread. I don’t feel like we need to grin and bear it, though.
He's back on ignore now that the game is over.
2: There is a rather unfortunate issue I've seen running through the community, where people take the suspicion that someone is scum as a free pass to be extremely lovely to that person. It's a mode of play that I really, really don't like and want people to consider the fact that when you are casing people, you really don't need to include the extra lovely personal jabs at someone. They generally aren't necessary and can cause people to give up on the whole mafia community entirely, doubly so if you are also wrong about your suspicion. I'm sure someone is going to read this and tell me to not be so emotional but it's actually possible to make an argument to dunk someone without being lovely and for both people to have a good time.
I'm not going to get into leadership analysis. I had my way of playing which worked for me, and KB and Bif both took the job on as they saw fit.
Good job to everyone that played, and thanks for sticking with it for almost an entire month. I hope to see everyone around in other mafia games, especially the new players!
That means you, Prince.
I will agree with this post Sal. I thought you did a gpod job of playing for most of the game, even if you were often wrong. However, it was obvious to me that you were actually looking back over the game and doing work.
I was pushing for KB to put you in battle starting around D3 because I thought you were town and your frustration about not being in battle felt real.
I will give you a slight pass for the don't kill me stuff at the end because you didnt realize that you were hung out as bait on that final day. We had you rolecopped on D5 and knew you couldn't be scum, so there was no way you would have gotten lynched on D6/7.
Night Kill: I'm curious why you used the non-NK version of the NK, given it was a big sticking point in Qal. It was really painful for scum, and boring for town. There can always be discussion like "ooh wow was that wifom what if X person is lying and is really scum!" but that isn't interactive or interesting. It's boring, and until forced to look at it, people are going to assume the NK target is town. Scum wasting their one opportunity to do damage to set up a temporary town cred is extremely bad.
Advisors: Advisors should probably have a move set that is separate from any other class in the game. I don't think it takes too long for private masons to discern alignment on each other, so maybe just make them confirmed town to each other with X moveset? The only person who will know is the king anyway, which is fine because they won't want to make it too obvious. My rolecop + private masonry basically made me not have to even play the game, because I could just narrow the list down and feed the info to KB so that if I died it wasn't even a loss.
Damage: The damage in this game was way too low, or the health was too high. We had multiple battles with leaders in them that resulted in 1 or 0 casualties. Combined with no NK, having nights with almost no info is meh.
Scum: Super duper weak. Their abilities are not much better than town, and especially with the NK discussion above they were weak enough it wasn't possible to tell if they went into battle or not because they were so weak they barely could do anything.
