IT has been irredeemably lovely on and off the court for the Cavs, that's a given, but I still have some sympathy for him. Looking back, I can see why he feels unfairly maligned, and is lashing out in such a defensive and antagonistic manner. I'll assume he's forever carried a chip on his shoulder about being the smallest guy on the court. Years of folks saying he had no shot, yet he makes it to the NBA. His personality (appears) to have contributed to being traded a bunch prior to landing in Boston. But it's hard to change your ways when it's gotten you that far. He broke out for the Celtics two seasons ago and earned an All-Star nod, and then a year ago he's midway through a career year and the team is atop the standings. Meanwhile league salaries rocketed up to $40M~ annually while he had another year at $6M~. An extension wouldn't permit a very hefty raise, not when compared to a new deal in the '18 off-season. Adding to the uncertainty were the numerous reports that Ainge was reluctant to commit to IT, had looked into trading him, etc. Then it all went to hell for IT. Mid-March he suffered a hip injury (torn right labrum) but returned after two games. Mid-April his sister died tragically in a car crash. Early-May he re-aggravated the hip injury vs the Wizards. Mid-May his season ended in unceremonious fashion with a third serving of labrum damage. And then despite having played through the emotional and physical duress, he was traded off to Cleveland in a stunning blockbuster deal. No one else wronged IT directly, but he kept drawing the short straws in the end. He was unfortunate to have been unable to immediately cash in on his elite seasons. He went from a young ascendant roster with a fantastic coach, to a declining contender with tons of political bickering. He quickly became old news to a fanbase who'd adored him just 6 months earlier. As simple an idea as a tribute video somehow became a controversial topic where-in he was pushed away. In the last year he suffered significant injuries, buried his sister, was traded from the team with which he had attained his greatest success, and saw his future contract value diminish with each week missed due to therapeutic recovery. That all sucks, he's likely very bitter, and so yeah, I feel for him.
