I don't know how this would be the reason for taking Reaves but someone on Twitter mentioned a few days ago that teams might already be keeping a Seattle expansion draft in mind so I dunno, maybe a reason for some things that might otherwise seem odd.

Dunno why some people are downplaying Brassard. His point production wasn't great last year, but he led the Sens in possession while playing against some pretty tough opposition. This year he's a .66 ppg player on a low-scoring team, and is the Sens second-best possession player behind Karlsson.

He's a legit 1b center, much more than just Bonino 2.0.

Brassard is a really good player and Pittsburgh is looking good for that threepeat. :smith:

Perhaps Vegas is looking at the teams they'll face in the playoffs and sees Dallas in the wildcard and Anaheim in their division, two of the four fightingest teams in the league, plus LA and Nashville, who are #7+8 in fights, and Winnipeg, who has a lot of guys who get rough after the whistle. They might think having Reaves is a good option, or even a deterrent as a scratch. They have Engelland, but he hasn't fought since this preseason.

But yeah, Reaves sucks.

vegas has a whole bunch of guys who can throw down though.

Why would they acquire a guy who is a UFA after this season for a draft that'll happen in 2019 at earliest?

He's a legit 1b center, much more than just Bonino 2.0. Gives the Pens the ability to roll 3 lines that could be any other team's top line, and gives them 2 dangerous power play units.

I don't know anyone downplaying it. Us Pens fans are ecstatic. Others will say poo poo sure but people are insane if they think the Brassard trade is a minor thing. Especially after the game tonight..

That wouldn't make any sense because Reaves is a pending UFA and there's absolutely no way that there's a Seattle expansion draft this summer.

I really think there isn't much of an angle on the Reaves thing other than Vegas sees this as a way to turn real money and cap space that they weren't using into draft picks. If the team owner is willing to spend the money, there isn't a downside here for them. Just because they have Reaves doesn't mean they're forced to play him.

And because they're essentially a floor team they get $2m towards the cap for a couple hundred thousand (depending on how the bonus payment structure works)

Bonuses are included in retained salary deals, so Vegas is on the hook for that part of Brassard's contract.

I guess I'm intrigued in two things:
1) Where do the Pens go from here? Do they still go after Kane or Nash to add All The Guys?
2) What would they have to offer to Buffalo or NYR?

I don't think they do. The younger players from WBS have been lights out so far this year. Maybe a depth defenseman but I don't even know about that.

They're done. They can't really fit much else anyways, and have no roster players they'd be willing to move out except Hunwick but nobody wants Hunwick.

How's it feel to have teams bail out your most hated rival? Feels good that it's no longer teams doing it for the Hawks (please don't trade for Seabrook anyone).

Also, Vegas is definitely losing in round one if they're gonna give Reaves some decent minutes.
