edit: SPOILERS AHEAD so read at your OWN PERIL IF YOU AHVEN'T SEEM THIS AMAZING MOVE So this mute lady bangs a fish (specifically the creature from the black lagoon) It's pretty cringey, I didn't know Guillermo del Toro had such fetishes but to each his own I guess, what did you think of this Oscar winning oeuvre, GBS? Also I was told Michael Shannon was a good actor but... Comfy Fleece Sweater fucked around with this message at 08:29 on Mar 13, 2018 |

If by "completely different" you mean "Del Toro gets his inspiration from monster films of old and they have similar designs" then yes they are complete different.

I just want him to make a straight horror movie again. Is that too much to ask?

How the creature looked was very important for the movie, imo, and also caring about appearances was the core message of the movie, so this is a great thread

The hands are more webbed, the eyes less cutesy, the coloring darker, and the detailing more "wild" but the basic shapes and even paint schemation are identical on both. The rest is just body language.

I liked how the fishman in this was a lot less expressive than Abe Sapien. Nothing quite like uncomfortable questions about consent in a romantic fairytale about a lady loving a fish. Also the guy who plays the fishman seems to play basically every creature in Del Toro's movies and he's really good at physical acting. It's a good movie but Pan's Labyrinth is still Del Toro's best.

A+ best mute lady / fish monster romance movie I've seen all year No but seriously it was pretty good - the scene where she fills the bathroom with water was v. sweet. I didn't like the really jarring tone shift though from 'dance scene' to 'fish man suddenly on the verge of death' because it seemed to come out of nowhere and exist only to ramp up the tension

"It's not just about a lady banging a fish! There's a lot more to it!" sounds eerily reminiscent of "She's not a child! She's actually 1000 years old!"

Shape of Water was extremely hamfisted, way too long and just kind of stupid, which makes it prime oscar-bait. Why is fish monster loving apparently a thing now? In Cold Skin, another recent movie, they do it with the genders swapped several times throughout the movie and it's more rape-y and it just seems like they are doing it because otherwise the movies are entirely unremarkable. At least cold skin kept me awake though, i'll give it that over shape of water.

Michael Shannon, specifically in this movie, looks almost exactly like a new manager at my job. He also gets really angry about things and every time he does I imagine him ripping off his decaying fingers and hucking them at a wall.
