Crawl is fine, it has tons of new gods and monsters and branches and poo poo, and unbelievable amounts of old annoying stuff has been removed. But if your favorite thing was something annoying and/or boring then it might be gone!

I will say that it's a shame lava orcs were never added to the stable release, their heat aura stuff could have been neat. Djinn are more understandable since Vine Stalkers ended up doing the whole "hp is padded by mp!" Gimmick.

Sif got changed and lost her old channel. Now she has an ability that gives you a huge buff to mana regeneration but costs piety per use.
If you were into that mummy of sif thing you might be disappointed.

mummies are supposed to be bad and terrible so good players who want the game to be harder can pick them, plus they have a few unique bits too so they're actually a unique race instead of just "human -1"

Neurolimal

They never need to eat so you can slowly scrub every floor clean until you have enough of everything to brute force your way through the game.

This also means they dont gaf about Gozag coinifying every corpse, either.

My favourite thing was high elf berserkers because I like swords.

:(

Also torment was like the only real endgame killer so full immunity to that was not a small thing.

I thought chunks of all types were a terrible design from day one. Like, I have nothing against wanting to mutate but maybe instead of a weird grindy drop from monsters, it could be, I dunno, a potion of some kind.

I agree, but I don't like that they took out purple chunks without taking out the other chunks. it's the worst of both worlds.

I'm not a fan of lichform being A Thing, having a joke race is one thing but it feels like bad design to have a race that looks like it could be useful on paper if you're new, until you realize there's a spell to emulate all of their strengths with minimal drawbacks.

If that's a spell that's here to stay mummies should be renamed idk, Fragile Corpse or Idiot Jester

necromutation has multiple extreme drawbacks, the most significant of which is that it's a fuckin level 8 transmutation/necromancy spell which is an enormous xp sink at the best of times which makes it not worth getting on normal runs+not usable for most of the game even on runs you get it on, and then also including the inability to use the much more useful necro spells that are around the same level(death's door, revivification), and then you still have the mummy downsides of vulnerability to holy and dispell undead+being unable to drink potions alongside all that

mummies are bad but I would much rather play a ghoul than use necromutation on any character other than the kinda rear end in a top hat who's doing zigs and has effectively already won

You can just turn the spell off to deal with those though.

Yeah it's a niche high level spell, but considering how much stuff mummies give up to be able to wander around with no hunger timer it's still kind of a gutpunch.

LazyMaybe

Well, again, mummies are supposed to be bad. Maybe they weren't originally intentionally designed that way, but it's the reason they remain that way-just like there are races/backgrounds/gods that make the game much easier, there are others that make the game harder. The former is good for new players just looking to get wins, the latter is good for vets looking for a bigger challenge.

When you get tormented, a bunch of Wiglafs are summoned to hit you. Torment resistance reduces the number of Wiglafs

resistentialism

Torment is good mechanic even_if/because players hate getting hit by it. It keeps excessively beefy characters on their toes without immediately wiping fragile characters. Of course, if every other source of damage was a % of max hp reduction, that would be boring, but sprinkled in here and there it's an easy to implement way to balance late game threats.

Seriouspost: yeah Torment is actually a pretty important mechanic. It could maybe stand some tinkering to get it Just Right in terms of how threatening and how commonly encountered it is, but the core mechanic is a good one from a game design perspective.

e: Hellfire kinda sucks though imo, if only because "fire damage, but you can't properly resist it with fire resistance" is a confusing design space. Rename it Raw Destructive Energy or Pure Entropy or something

Players also get mad because the only source of torment is basically "this guy can not be in LOS of you" because it hits the whole screen. I'm no crawl expert but the game could probably see some good results by reducing the amount of Symbol of Torment casters and adding some more poo poo in that uses non-MR-checking Agony, or some kind of monster that torments on successful melee hits, so you have more torment overall but less smitey torment.

Yeah it's the edge of the screen bomb that makes torment so terrible to deal with.

It's also a check on power level though, so I don't think getting rid of it entirely is a good approach.

Great! That's slightly better, even if it's simply become something that can possibly be confused with Torment instead of possibly being confused with fire damage. More thematically coherent with the various endgame threats, at least.

pretty much. it was a neat idea when it first came out but a lot of people, myself included, really cooled on it after a while after realizing that it's not all that great for a multitude of reasons. i've said it before but dead cells pretty much just ate its lunch entirely and made a strictly better game in every way.
