When our manager found out, rather than telling him "hey, want to develop your skills on <x> team?", he seriously told the guy, verbatim: "that's not your job and if I catch you doing it again you'll be reprimanded." Unsurprisingly the guy quit not too long after, just more proof managers are loving idiots most of the time.

My boss wants me to be sensitive and not just put a fuckin policy in place today that cuts the connection. I GOTTA TALLLLLLLKKK to them. Something that pissed me off: I had a phone screen yesterday, most phone screens I've had were 15-30 minutes, nothing crazy just initial info and Q&A etc, probably the same experience for everyone else, but not the one I had yesterday. I got somewhat blind-sided by the recruiter after I had agreed to time and date, with her telling me that the director likes to see people, meaning it was a video conference (only one way though), and that the loving thing would be 45--60 minutes. It was dumb and awful but a job I was kind of leaning towards no about anyway, and it went poorly because I'm at a loving restaurant holding my phone like a loving idiot for 45 minutes, the video/audio dropped a few times and then it just stopped working around the 46 minute mark. Not pissing me off today: Manager admitted that everything sucks and that I am a kick rear end employee; still looking for a job but obviously acknowledgement is always good.

Then everybody is on my case about how bad their monitor and phone is even after I check and tell them they are experiencing normal equipment behavior. Another reason I can't want to get out of internal IT.

2 years ago I wrapped up 3 years of working for a client through a large intermediary, let's call them Accenture. My direct contact was through a intermediary intermediary subcompany, Accenture Resourcing Ltd, who were in the same building and used the same email system etc. I'm now going to work for another client through the same intermediary but a different intermediary intermediary, and Accenture are not willing to provide themselves with a reference for the time I spent working through them, and won't let me work for the new client without that reference.

During my last round of job searching a few interviewers asked about my name and it's a shockingly uncomfortable question in that context. I'm happy to talk about the Hebrew meaning and history in a casual context but whenever it came up while I was holding a copy of my resume and wearing a suit it's like <beat> <another beat> "It's uh, Jewish." Not that I think they were looking to DQ me for it (this is NYC after all, I can't be the only Jew these people have ever met,) it's just...not great.

The only name issue I expect is the opposite of Tara O'Connor's problem, and is well documented in Freakonomics. Black names are well known disqualifiers. Two identical resumes, and Jessica is making it past the HR screen and Shameeka isn't.

I’ve got a very Arabic-sounding name, and I’m about as pasty as you can get. I wonder if that has ever gotten my resume tossed. My in-laws talk about names sounding white on paper.

My last job hunting round I was applying to dozens of jobs that I was more than qualified for, and not hearing a single thing back. Frustrated, I briefly considered putting a shortened version of my name on my resume, in case my resume was getting tossed for being a woman. Like Chris instead of Christine, for example. I'd like to believe that wouldn't be a disqualifier, but I'm sure it is for some. I never did though.

My name is white sounding as hell, English last name (but French spelling) and my first name doesn't even translate into a lot of other languages, but the director was, I believe, Chinese, so perhaps he's looking for someone more like him, I dunno. He did seem fairly self-important and his questions were pretty bad as far as interviewers go.

My replacement is a drat idiot. This week he has: •Sent out data to customers without having it reviewed •Managed to change the date formats on a report that shows data by day to DD-MM-YY instead of MM-DD-YYYY but messed it up so 3/1-3/12 were sorted as if they were the 3rd day of each month but 3/13-3/31 were sorted correctly. •Tried to modify a report and tried to join a number to a string. Obviously didn’t test it because he sent it to me for review before putting it in production. •Didn’t join a single required meeting. •Can’t figure out how to upload some documents to SharePoint. •Gave someone a spreadsheet with an active database connection with the user name and password for the generic reporting account in it. Of course he is in a completely different part of the organization than me because he is in Indiana and his boss doesn’t believe in getting rid of people for being unable to do the job. They just get shifted to a different position over and over until they quit.
