One of my L1 techs asked me for help on an issue. I spend an hour troubleshooting and going over the work he's done. I find where the disconnect in his knowledge is and gave him a solution to try and fix it. He's still messaging me with extra steps he's taking and looking while having done nothing I suggested he do. If you don't want my help, please direct your concerns to the loving wall beside you. Going through a ton of GDPR stuff recently, pretty much the number one thing on people's minds at the moment as we make sure we can be compliant. Then the CEO casually throws out a "can you just log into my account to check something, I think you know my password" to his assistant. You will never close the giant security hole that is people.

Hey how much is random electronic that's not a computer worth anything? I have no idea. guess I have no experience with this. Well in your professional opinion how much is this worth? I've never purchased one no idea. Just tell me should we try and sell this on eBay or throw it out? I have no idea just throw it out. *30 minutes later* There's a bunch listed for $300+ on eBay! Why did you tell me to throw this out!

So this one time the New Business team signs it out for a pitch. I check it for adapters and power cords, turn it on once to check the bulb, and hand it over. The VP of New Business comes back steaming mad. I get called into the main conference room with him, the president of the agency (local office only, but in charge of about $100 million a year in business) and the Senior Executive Creative Director for North America (this was almost 15 years ago and some of the spots he made his reputation on still show up in some markets). this is why the phrase "nothing is fool-proof to a talented fool" is so popular in IT. It's like when someone has Windows issues, refuses to reboot, and after an hour of pissing and moaning they finally relent...and it completely fixes their issue. poo poo like that is exactly why a lot of companies I worked for have had mandatory forced rebooting after patches, they'd set up like a 48-72 hour window from the time updates were installed and send out warnings 2-3 times a day about it. People tend to get the hint real quick when they can't forcibly close the "your PC will reboot in <x> seconds" and lose a bunch of work. Even better when their own managers bring the hammer down on them like "why didn't you do what IT told you?"

Walked posted:DEV: "Hey there I need help with Ansible, Puppet, or Chef, can we do a conference call this afternoon?" I'm dealing with something very similar with regards to DR. People are failing to understand that retrofitting DR into something that wasn't designed for it can be very difficult and is, generally speaking, an upfront consideration from a design perspective. One of the non-infrastructure guys has learned of virtual IPs and load balancing, so now every day there is at least one conversation where the guy says, "Just use a VIP for it! Put it behind the F5! There, I just designed your DR!" I'm also having to explain to seasoned technical folks why you don't need to move or replicate a domain controller, and why that's a horrible idea when you should just, you know, promote one.

It's good when people play at being the architect and proudly tell you how they have two sites now on a private network and so they can fail their applications between datacentres but oh wait each site has a different subnet because that's how things work and you never thought about that before you ploughed ahead with just ordering things.

We want to break it into separate docker containers so that stops happening. ME: That's probably a good idea. Here you go. Please loop in DevOps, this is going to require some changes. THEM: WAIT WHY DOES THIS REQUIRE MODIFYING DEPLOYMENTS AND BUILDS?! WHY CAN'T WE JUST DEPLOY YOUR CODE AS IS?! It only took a month to explain it 19 different ways, but poo poo's finally going into prod tomorrow.

It sounds like some higher ups have decided my replacement being lovely is my fault. That somehow after a decade of always positive reviews I’ve decided not to do my job. Things I’ve accomplished today: responded to a few emails telling people to talk to my replacement instead of me. That was about it. Didn’t answer any calls, didn’t write any documentation. Three more days, four more meetings (that I probably won’t attend), and I’m out of here.

Yay, double post. When I migrate mailboxes from Exchange 2013 to Office 365, how long will a mailbox (with correct AD user attached) stay in the cloud if I don't attach a license to it? I'm finishing up a migration, and I have a few hundred users who hasn't gotten a license yet because their team leads are slow as molasses.

Currently on hold with our internal help desk because bitlocker has freaked out and won’t let me access my PC. I hate this software so much. The only thing that changed in the PC between yesterday and today was the USB headset is unplugged. I also can’t access webmail. Hopefully they terminated my access early.
