Kilza posted:They've had Bakersfield as their AHL team since 2015-16 and have failed to make the playoffs in all 3 seasons, although OKC was their AHL team before that (from 2010-2015) and they were actually successful so A friend of mine who stopped watching hockey and came back a few years ago asked me why Calgary was so bad for most of the 90's. Certainly the trade with Leafs that sent Gilmour away is amongst the worst ever made in the league, but they could have recovered from that if they hadn't blown SO many 1st rounders from '91 (when the trouble with Doug started) on. Seriously, this is just their list of 1st rounders from' 91 until 2002 when Daryl Sutter took over. '91: #19, Niklas Sundblad (2GP in the NHL. Seriously, 2. The only person they drafted that year who played any time in the NHL was Sandy loving McCarthy. Ugh.) '92: #6, Cory Stillman (1025 GP, 405 with Calgary. Not a terrible pick, except we picked him over Sergei Gonchar and Jason Smith, both of whom I'd rather have, but at least that's more hindsight based. Only 3 other players played more than 200 games in the NHL other than Stillman, and two of them, Robert Svehla, and Joel Bouchard, never played for Calgary) '93: #18, Strike out on a another Swede, this time Jesper Mattsson. Never plays an NHL game. Picked over Saku Koivu, Jamie Langenbrunner, and Bryan McCabe. Only one player (German Titov) picked ever does anything for the Flames. He is picked in the 10th round. '94: #19 Chris Dingman. He was not good. That 1st sucked for a LOT of teams, but they could have had Curtis Brown (#43) Jose goddamned Theodore (selected #44) at #19. Dingman had 15 goals in 385 games. No other players selected by the Flames in the draft ever do anything for Calgary. Pattern's forming. '95: #20 Denis Gauthier. I actually don't hate this pick. Where I struggle is Clark Wilm being the only guy who ever suits up for the Flames other than Gauthier. I realize drafts are crapshoots but you have to do better. We also traded for Iggy at this draft, though. Mitigating factor: we did it as much due to Iggy's potential as Nieuwendyk being tired of Calgary's poo poo. '96 #13: Derek Morris. Morris was a decent PP QB. He was also a defensive liability. They also picked Toni Lydman who played close to 300 G for Calgary. He stunk. '97: #6 Daniel Tzacuk: Picked over Samsonov, Hossa, Morrow, and Cleary. Combined GP of Flames' picks? 81. TOTAL. '98: #6 Rico Fata, who was poo poo upon poo. Drafted over many quality guys including Simon Gagne. Upside is we got Regehr from Colorado, which is the only thing that made the Fleury trade less of a debacle. '99: #11 Oleg Saprykin. We drafted Craig Anderson that year also, and promptly let him go. He is the only other NHL player drafted in the draft. Oleg was drafted over Dave Tanabe, Barret Jackman, and Marty Havlat. '00: #9 Brent Krahn. Hands down, the worst 1st round pick in Flames history, picked over a bunch of decent forwards, topped by Justin Williams. We picked 3 guys in this draft with over 500 games: Kurtis Foster (poop), Jarret Stoll (never played a game for the Flames), and Travis Moen (green poop). '01 #14 Chuck Kobasew. Wildly inconsistent. Rest of the draft has 1 player, David Moss, who plays significant time in the NHL. Lots of bad drafting after that (Kris Chucko comes to mind, who at least had a great name) but at least Sutter was wheeling and dealing to make up for it.

people picked Boston to miss the playoffs and I thought they'd be a wild card team at best, so all things considered it was a good season

It looses a lot of sting when it's bilingual. Marchand should have replied in both languages.

We didn't have Thornton, Hansen, or ward, and we did have the corpse of Martin so whatever fine we lost. I feel like we played to our potential but I will remain so very disappointed.

Sharks are out. Well, whatever. They should have played game 1 better if they felt they deserved a game 7. Hitting the bar and posts in one game as much as you do in a whole series is something that happens sometimes to good teams. Getting shut out twice isn't. NHL reffing is as terrible as it's ever been, btw. Veskit posted:Why he's good and cool. His injury history doesn't look good. If he'll take more money over years, fine. If he wants years, let him go. Craptacular! fucked around with this message at 20:03 on May 7, 2018 |

I'd be more upset but that was horrible hockey and at least I don't have to watch it anymore. Can't win every year.

Congrats Caps fans. It was a long time coming. Pens ran out of gas and had some injuries. The rest will be good for them. For off season moves...I dunno. The roster when healthy is still pretty good. I'd consider moving Letang for a less mistake prone top 4 dman and especially if they could get some young assets/cap space out of it but there's also an argument for keeping him. Mistake prone or not he still drove possession better than any other Pens d.
