Presumably all those false hits on weed once it's legal would mean that they wouldn't be admissible as drug dogs anymore, cause they'd get hits all the time on legal weed, which would be a 4th amendment nightmare, even if the cop was looking for a different drug. There's already a threshold of false hits dogs must meet in order to be certified for LEO work, otherwise crooked officers would just train dogs to hit on literally anything and everything so they could search whenever they wanted. So with the drug dogs decertified, gosh, I guess we'll have to kill them all!

Hot take: Euthanize the police and send the K-9's to rehab centers. Also, how effective are drug dogs anyways? I remember reading about how dogs trained for certain compounds are basically as good as random searches. I.e. a waste of resources.

That said, their real value for us was in tracking down and/or pursuing fleeing suspects. I saw plenty of dudes who could outrun a cop, but I never saw one outrun a dog. The fur missile always got them. Apart from dogs used purely for screening purposes (like TSA dogs), Illinois' police dogs would probably just shift more towards subduing unruly suspects.

Fox and Friends had a great exercise in survey writing this morning. Paraphrased, it said AG Sessions planned to prosecute 100% of people who illegally cross the border. Do you think this is tough enough to deter illegal immigration? Man plans to spank children for 4 hours per day. Do you think this is tough enough to make them behave?

Not too long ago I sat through Fox News’ presentation to agencies about their 18/19 year. Things they actually said: They are the network for grown ups Fox News is the leader in news entertainment Most of their audience is old and “affluent” Most of their audience are thought leaders Their fans show higher levels of trust and loyalty (no poo poo) Beyond the sillier talking points, they were very apolitical. I thought them branding themselves as news entertainment was pretty telling.

Like, they have to include "entertainment" because their information is so often dishonest and made up that they don't qualify as "news"? Or am I just remembering a rumor someone once said and thinking of it as fact? (much like fox News)

Idgi. Couldn't the dogs be used to catch pretty much any other form of contraband, including black market weed? Just cause weed is legal doesn't mean that people aren't going to try to avoid paying taxes on it, like with cigarettes.

Not to mention underage kids holding weed, illegal Mexican weed being smuggled in to avoid tarrifs and taxes, weed in restricted areas (courthouses, jails, secure hospitals, etc). We would still need to know who has weed and where, even if it does get legalized.

I don’t trust k9 officers more than other cops because I can make Monty think the greatest collection of cat poo poo is inside your gas tank if I wanted to, and I’ve had a friend get searched because a k9 went berserk. They didn’t find anything and my friend says the cop provoked the dog into signaling there was stuff in the car so they could justify the search. Also my friend is black and I feel like in 2018 that’s an important part of the story. E: also the k9 scratched his car but nothing was ever done by the cops to fix that, even though he pursued it a bit before deciding he didn’t want to put himself on anymore police radar and gave up.

I'll go into depth on police canines later, I work in outfitting them. In the end, the results come down to individual handlers and their methods for upkeep in training. A trainer doesn't always have access to the dog, so a lot of a dogs' mentality will fall back on the handler. If the handler is a piece of poo poo, the dog is going to slack out of proper training and do poo poo like scratch cars when they think they smell something, instead of sitting like they are trained. I can't go into actual narcotics and explosives kits, but once you pop the seals on those, it's only good for so long, so you have to train quickly with actual scents, and that limits exposure unless your budget is just overflowing. Even then, they're analog scents. Kinda like how some essential oils are used to simulate rotting corpses.
