Playoffs are no big deal,
don't have a crap attack.
I know no one will care, but I was looking at Getzlaf's career, and I seem to have completely forgotten he was a Hart trophy runner-up in 13-14. I have absolutely no memory if this actually happening.

This search was spurred by looking at a list of the HHOF chances for the 2003 draft. It's kind of funny how differently we look at a player's career every few years. Like, Zach Parise and Dion Phaneuf would have been on the top of that list in 2009. Hell, Eric Staal still has a chance, but people are probably only thinking of him again because of his last two seasons.

Getzlaf was 2nd in scoring that year. Giroux also got nominated for a season that is realistically much worse than the season he just put up and got 0 consideration whatsoever.

Eric Staal has a very high chance. He's at 922 career points right now. If he holds up at all he's getting into pretty elite territory for a modern player. No one's going to vote against him if he has 500 goals, 1200 points and was a central figure on a Cup winning team.

They always put in more HOF guys than people expect, particularly high scoring forwards who lasted a long time.

Schneider is so done:

quote:

Last Tuesday, Cory Schneider underwent successful surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left hip. The procedure was performed by Dr. Bryan Kelly at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. Schneider's recovery time is approximately five months and Dr. Kelly expects him to make a full recovery. Further updates regarding his progress will be provided later in the summer as available.

also Hall is a beast

quote:

On Friday, April 30, Taylor Hall underwent successful surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left hand. The procedure was performed by Dr. Robert Hotchkiss at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. Hall suffered the initial injury in late December, but was able to play with it under the care and management of New Jersey's medical staff. It was not the injury that kept him out of the All-Star Game in January. He will be ready for training camp in September.

annnd this is why Maroon looked even slower than usual

quote:

On Wednesday, Patrick Maroon underwent successful surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back. The procedure was performed by Dr. Andrew Sama at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. He will be able to resume off-season training and preparation programs before the start of training camp.

Does one bad series against the Caps really spell the end of Letang? The guy still had 50pts and was nearly a PPG in the playoffs. He had some defensive lapses, but cmon.

He looked bad all year, and with his injury history this is pretty concerning given he has a $7.25M cap hit through 2023. He still put up decent production this year, sure, but have to keep in mind how much time he's playing with Crosby, Malkin & Kessel. I'd be open to JR trading him if he's able to get another puck-moving D in return, but to be fair I have no idea how likely that is or who the return could be

Trading Maatta would be a better place to start, though given they just extended him recently I don't know what the appetite for that is. His cap hit is only $4.1M but that's still too much

I don't know, but to echo what Sharks said Letang did have horrible gaffes all year long.

Don't think all the things he brings are easily replaced though, so it'd have to be a ransom if they did move him.

if the penguins traded letang without getting a top pairing d back or making a separate move to replace him they'd be slamming their window shut. they can't really afford to take a step back next season because it's the last season of the current contracts for hagelin, brassard, and most importantly guentzel.

His on-ice save percentage being dead last on the Pens among their defense despite that either implies terrible luck or Letang being an idiot. Or somewhere in between.

He's always made up for his poor decision making with his speed and that's obviously going to be a problem as he ages. He did look bad this year but he looked awful early and got better as the season went on so maybe he can be coached into being a bit better with his decision making process. At any rate I agree with you that the return would have to be absurd to move him. I doubt that's possible.

Pens should definitely keep an eye on moving him. At 31 he's not going to be getting any faster or better. Trading him in the right deal and getting good value before his games falls off a cliff is probably a smart move

e: Not saying they should do it this year though...really depends on how open their window is suspected to be...but if in a couple of years they need cap space and have to retool their lineup, assets from a Letang trade plus the cap space could be a big help

Another footnote on William Karlsson's turnaround and just how unbelievable his season has been:

quote:

The Blue Jackets were hit hard by the expansion draft, harder than anyone could have imagined. Karlsson, who went without a goal in his final 45 regular-season games with Columbus, scored 43 for the first-year Knights. It’s one of the most remarkable career turnarounds in the history of sports, really.

I didn't realize he went 45 games without a goal.
