FelicityGS posted:Lucky can do some tricks. This is a tiny sampling of some he knows, and it is now a few months old. He does jump better, and we are learning roll over and through (go through the pink tube) now. He also is learning how to do circle (go around in a circle). Wow. He's even more trained than Dinah. Is it some Munchkin thing? I don't think my wife has gotten her doing "Wave" yet. (Dinah just will sit up and speak on command so far. Yes, I am getting the wife to try and catch it on video.) Edit: A pic to tide folks over. Also a bonus appearance by Griffin, our all-black former feral. Kvantum fucked around with this message at 03:59 on May 25, 2018 |

Radio! posted:HOW I got a clicker, like you would use for a dog. I spent 3 days just practicing with him--click, treat. Click treat. I started delaying the treat a bit from the click, so he understood very clearly that a click means a treat. I asked a friend who does animal behaviour, and she gave me a cool dog book (101 Dog tricks: step by step activities to engage, challenge, and bond with your dog) that uses clicker training. I taught him how to sit over the first few sessions--when he made progress, I'd click and give him a treat. Once he got the behaviour, I would only reward when he followed the command. I mostly use gestures--he doesn't seem to pay attention to my voice, which is fine. After that, I taught him to sit up, and we've just kept building on his tricks. Each session, we do a quick warm up running through several of his 'mastered' tricks, and then we work on whatever the current trick is. At first, he had a really short attention span. Some days he still gets frustrated, but ultimately it's a puzzle with a reward he really wants, so I just adjust for how he's doing each day and we keep working at it. I really love the time we spend training, and he always starts purring as loud as he can and following me around when I grab his clicker off the hook, so I think he likes it too. Kvantum posted:Wow. Yes, I am getting the wife to try and catch it on video.) I don't think it's a particularly a Munchkin thing, but I do think they are more inclined because they're generally puzzle solving to climb and get around all day while a regular sized cat can just jump up to what it's interested. Lucky is extremely food motivated, so that helps a lot. Wave was a total accident--I eat plain greek yogurt with some cereal every morning, and was staring out the window when he got up on the window seat and wanted to see what was in the bowl. When sitting up left him still too short, he used a paw to point at the bowl--it got my attention and I was super surprised. I checked real quick he could have plain yogurt, and then that morning we had an impromptu training session--he'd point/wave at the bowl, I'd give him a tiny drop of yogurt. Now, any time he wants to see what I'm doing/holding, he sits up and waves/points and it is the cutest thing I've tied it to a hand gesture, because it is a super useful thing he does and I don't want him to stop. That and training him to bring toys he wants to play with over have both been life savers. Also your cats are both so lovely Edit: Here's a pic of him this morning, checking out his selfie felgs fucked around with this message at 04:33 on May 25, 2018 |
