One of the rumored leaders of the Alamos 20k terrorist group, which is a level up the hate hierarchy from Humanis, was code named The Nazi by people in the shadows in the data dumps they had on him. That's because he was a German who got his start in the neo-Nazi underground before he led his wing into Humanis. He was later rumored to have been killed by his protege, codenamed The Doctor, because he was apparently the second coming of Mengele.

I expected better from you Shadowrun than "But...what when the bad guys are NAZIS?" Not even some insane brand of of futuristic fascists. Just plain ol' nazis. Do we get "Cyber-Stalin", too, somewhere? He infects the IT infrastructure of the free world with the evils of data communism.

habeasdorkus posted:Nazism making a comeback in the future was surprisingly prescient for something started in the 1980s. May be just me. I only use the term "nazi" in the historical context with national socialism germany, the NSDAP and Adolf Hitler. Last time i checked these don't really resurfaced or are still pretty dead. Let me check the international broadcast of "Deutsche Welle". No swastikas flags flapping in the skies there either. So the general idea is all nazis are fascists, but not all fascists are nazis. Of course it is pretty common to use the term "nazi" (or #nazi) more along the lines to decribe the general resurfacing of fascists and fascist ideology along Eco's "Ur Fascism". Then i guess "habeasdorkus would be right. "Videogame nazis" (together make video game soviets and zombies) make still fantastic antagonists, though. Striking imagery, powerful militarists (good for shooter genre), but ultimately flawed and such such a delicious nonredeemable hate sinks (just look at some posts above me). Do you want to shoot a lot of men in your shoot-men game and don't to humanize the anatagonists too much and force second-guessing player actions? Just add nazis. I think we should just shoot Dietrich's nazi-nephew. Better don't take any chances. OutofSight fucked around with this message at 18:47 on Jun 15, 2018 |

I mean, they're not singing Deutscheland Uber Alles, but they've totally started saying "blood and soil" again and we've got reactionary/fascist ethnonationalists all over the world gaining steam. So, they're not technically Nazis but they're pretty down with Nazi iconography and racial ideology.

Neo-Nazis are honestly worse than the originals. Whole lotta people got on the Nazi bandwagon without knowing exactly where it was going, but these guys have the full benefit of hindsight and are like "Yeah that was good, let's do that again."

I've always wondered why Maxim cries about being low on ammo and so on after just one tiny fight. Didn't he bring any spare mags at all? It's barely more than the first group of security guards you need to gun down when a run goes... well, normal. Maybe he's representing the dnd character who demands the party rests after every single room in the dungeon.

Okay, no more nazi chat. I get that it's very relevant in many ways right now but this thread clearly cannot handle it. These forums have no shortage of places for discussing current events and the sorry state of modern society, but this is not one of them. This place is for enjoying fictional misery as a break and distraction from the real stuff, which is actually pretty cyberpunk in itself when you think about it. I'll say it one last time: keep the focus on the Sixth World, and keep it civil. Otherwise I'll have no choice but to lock this thread until the next update, which I think would be a drat shame considering how good it usually is.

Xander77 posted:I appreciate how D skips right from "my nephew just got mixed up with the wrong crowd due to specific circumstances" to "now let's go kill a bunch of Nazi youths that obviously were born to be fascist thugs". I always thought this was because the developers wanted to be very, very sure that you, the player, understood that he was not down with Nazis just because he wanted you to save one of them. Dietrich is a scary-looking bald german guy, and this mission can be done early, so it's possible you don't have a real good handle on who he is yet and fall prey to popular stereotypes. (Because people playing this game might not know that much about anarchists or punks, either.) Having him lean extra-hard on how much he hates Humanis helps counter that impression. Also, Dietrich is the best. Among other reasons, this LP is great because it lets me sort of vicariously meet him again through the other people who haven't played it before.

Playing HK and I just want to say that while you get weirder and wilder companions they feel way less like they have a reason to be your friends, at least at the beginning. So enjoy the wonderfully immersive relationships here for all they are worth. Also that game forces a backstory on your character which rubs me the wrong way.
