That's because the hinges on an inward opening door are on the inside. Of course now you can hide the hinges but it was easier to bar the door than to figure out how to stop an invading army from just sawing the hinges off before people figured out how to do that.

Not that "our castle has a poo poo door" is much of an argument since welp guess what our castle has:

Every door on the building evacuation path has to open outwards, or towards the larger open space, here in the socialist Northern Europe, to prevent trampling and for the (easier) possibility to force open a jammed door from within the building. I have never seen an apartment door or access door which opens inwards.

Same with most commercial spaces and newer apartments in the US. It's single-family residential construction where the door most commonly opens inward. I actually think (haven't bothered to google it) it's because we have historically put 2 doors in-line on our houses. A light "screen" door that opens outward and a much sturdier door that opens inward. Because the doors are only 6" apart they cannot physically open the same direction.

Update!

Man, late-stage hi-fi cassette players are weird inside. I've got plenty of experience with early '60s decks (big, open mechanisms) and the early-mid '90s stuff (cheap plastic mechanisms with all the processing and control done digitally with a microcontroller), but this deck is from 1979. It has what looks like ICs, but they're really just hybrid components, and there's a hefty mix of hand-designed soldered boards, and point-to-point components attached with posts and wire wrap. Then some wire wrap components are soldered and shielded. The mechanism itself has all of the complexity of a completely mechanical late-60's deck, but it's been miniaturized with heavy springwork and piano keys.

I got out of class today at 1530, and by 1600 I was working on it. It's not 1930 and I've finally got it put back together. New belts, a hefty half-can of deoxit, choice placement of some lithium grease, and a "custom" heatsink on the one, single traditional power transitor in it (for good measure).

Combined with my (1kg!) Koss Pro/4AA headphones, it's so loving hipster I may die

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2VoOYohnwE

During assembly, I had routed the three belts in it about four different ways, all of which were wrong. There's one belt that stretches what I would consider an inappropriate amount, halfway across the internal mechanism, with the spindle axle for the main flywheel running through the middle. Analog miniaturization! Let me add, it's extremely difficult to diagnose wow and flutter using 80's pop music that's full of it intentionally. Took me too long to realize that I should probably pop in some Simon and Garfunkel instead.

It's 7:18 and I just woke up after dreaming all night about trying to fix a late 70s tape deck that was mostly made of Legos but also shitloads of metal wheels that were just stacked on top of each other in a very particular order but not actually attached to anything. And for some reason three spent 12.7mm shell casings. And when I had it all opened up I inadvertently turned it upside down. Welp that's my nightmare hope you enjoyed it God bless.

When I drove between DC and New Jersey a few times a year or two ago I always had to go through tolls in Delaware, but I just googled it and apparently if you don't go across the Delaware Memorial Bridge and detour around the toll at the MD/DE border it may be possible to go through Delaware without paying any tolls?

Honestly you pay so many tolls on that route it's hard to even care that much (it would be a nightmare without EZ-pass though.)
