So, I finally had an appointment with an Ob/Gyn about my painful sex issue. I expected to answer a lot of uncomfortable questions, but there wasn't much of that. The doctor wants me to get some blood tests done and we'll go from there.

Thing is, the 2 blood tests need to be done on day 3 and day 21 of my cycle. I presume I will need to go off my birth control for a month then? I just took off my last patch for the month, so will be expecting my period within the week. How would I go about calculating which days of my cycle I'll need to book the blood tests for?

There's an excellent app called Clue that tracks many period cycle things and isn't designed like a birthday card for an 8 year old.

Thanks! I just downloaded it! This should make things a bit easier.

I also got booked for an ultrasound on Tuesday. The doctor mentioned something about injecting me with dye and that sounds scary. For some reason, I live in the provincial capital, but have to go to a suburb city to get an ultrasound.

He might be talking about checking that your tubes aren't blocked, which seems a little premature but probably not a bad idea to check in any case.

For scheduling blood tests you literally should just be able to show up at a blood collection place on your day. They know cycles aren't predictable for a lot of women, many don't have a lot of warning as to when day 2 will be. And yes off birth control they want to check your normal hormone function.

I was given print outs to take to a local lab, where I can make an appointment online and just show up with the paperwork. I've got another one for a blood test In a couple weeks to check my thyroid levels again.

Sounds like an hsg test. I had one after a year of trying and fell pregnant my next cycle. They use a dye to flush your fallopian tubes/ check for blockages. It wasn’t a picnic but it was over quickly.

How do you remain chill while waiting on tests? My spouse informed me the earliest we could have a positive test would be tomorrow, but it wouldn't be the most reliable. Still, the desire to demand they pee on a stick is high.

To increase chill, try posting in byob? :v:

It's hard to wait for information, for sure.

Here's a little reveal, my wife is pregnant :D if you couldn't figure out from my posts recently. It's 1 week til the end of trimester uno, so what the hell I'll blab. Don't tell her I said anything ;)

Anyway she took a preg test like 1 week before next expected period and it was negative. She was kinda sad, but on the other hand they're only like 50? Or 75? % effective at that point in the cycle and also there's no reason to despair either way, as others have said each month even a normally fertile couple has only a 20% chance. Anyway a week later she took another test and it was positive and she woke me up from a deep 5 am slumber to tell me and it was wonderful.

My point is pee on a stick if you want but don't fret if it's negative!

Wow, sounds a lot like my (wife's) experience. She peed on a stick after she missed her period with a negative result, and then a doctor had her take a blood test a week later. Guess what, positive. And that was 7 weeks ago.

So yeah, give yourself some pee-ce of mind and do a home test if you need something to occupy your mind while you wait for the lab to get back to you. Can't hurt. And maybe you set yourself up for a nice surprise!

When I got a positive test, my husband was skeptical because we’d been trying for ages and because it was a cheapo internet test strip. Redid the test twice with more expensive tests before he believed it, and he was so stoked.

Haha, this was also my husband... all three times, despite an explanation that false positives aren’t really a “thing.”

I use baby tracker and I love it. It’s free unless you want the full version with the charting of patterns. I love data so I did, only a couple of dollars.

LANA!!! CRUUUUUSH!
Welp I'm scheduled for my c-hyst Tuesday morning. The baby will be at 34 weeks, 4 days. It's earlier than I would have preferred but they see it as the safest option. Overall, the doctors seem positive that I shouldn't lose too much blood (maybe 2-3 liters), but there's always the risk that things could go south.

At least the whole team seems pretty organized. There is an oncologist who specializes in gynecology (has worked there for 20 years and does cesareans frequently) who will be dealing with the most part of the surgery. The reasoning is that as the placenta is close to a ureter and a vessel so he would be he best equipped to handle cutting out the placenta in that region. There will also be a urologist present in case they need to do anything to my bladder.

I'll try to post when I get the chance later this week, but the reception is rather poo poo at the hospital.

Same, I find the chart really easy for noticing patterns that I might not have otherwise seen, like if his nap times are shifting or whatever. He’ll be a year old on Wednesday and I’m still using it.

Plus the same account can be accessed on multiple phones so my husband also has it, and an old phone gets left with family members who are babysitting so they can keep track too and I can check when we’re out to see if he’s sleeping/how long he’s been awake or whatever.

I had my ultrasound today. Both kinds!

And afterwards, I had an X-ray where they injected dye into me. We were just talking about aspects of my work as the doctor was doing his thing when it got way more painful than I expected! Ouch!

Then the doctor showed me the x-ray, said that both of my tubes were blocked and that I'd have to speak to him at the clinic again about possible surgery or IVF treatment.

drat, the X-ray technician was not kidding when she said I'd have some bad cramps for a couple days so I should take it easy.

This still doesn't really solve the problem that I came to see the doctor about in the first place, but I guess it clears up something else. Probably saved me a lot of time overall.

It went pretty well, the only issue was that they tried to have me awake for the delivery, but all the prep took so long that the epidural was wearing off. The subsequent epidural didn't really take so they knocked me out (which they were going to do anyways). The surgery took 4-5 hours and I lost 3 liters of blood which is about what they expected. Baby is chilling in NICU as her lungs aren't mature yet. I'm hooked to a bunch of stuff so I can't see her right away.

I make the same joke every time and it always gets a chuckle - "I'm too liberal for all that, going to wait until the baby tells me what gender it identifies as."

Except - I'm kind of serious maybe?

We lost our son at 23 weeks today. He wanted to see us so badly, he couldn't wait. Took after me, who wasn't one to wait for instant gratification. I wish he could have hung on a bit longer. Even worse, I wasn't local when it happened, so I'm on the plane flying home right now.

I'm new to this thread but my wife is due in just over three weeks. I have a few questions:

We're doing a home birth, with a midwife. The midwife has a plan to get us to a hospital if there's a problem (I asked, she said the % of her patients that end up in hospital for whatever reason is 17%). I've driven to the hospital and know where to go in case we need to go and the midwife is not around. I want to make a 'go bag' for if we do end up in hospital that I probably won't need. So q1 is:
- "what do we put in the go bag that we hope not to ever use?"

The second question is, we have six (we had three, a responsible amount, then were given more to bottle raise and found it too hard to give them away) cats. They're indoor-only. They're well socialised. Does anyone have any experiences with newborns and cats? We've allocated one room for the newborn that we don't let the cats into, but we might keep the crib in our bedroom at first next to the bed (apparently some people say this is bad now? IDK?) and the cats are allowed in the bedroom. I suppose the question is 'what do you think?'

q3 is, I read the first post about washing diapers. I do a bunch of housework already, I don't care about poo. My wife wants to do a cloth diaper service. I would rather do disposables but I'm ok with washing diapers myself. The diaper service people are all 'IT'S MORE ECONOMICAL YOU WILL SAVE MONEY' but of course they have a sales pitch. I want to know if it IS more economical?
http://tinytots.com/diaperservice/prices-sizes/
we'll probably do 75 diapers a week for $26.25.

Regarding question 2: When my nephew was a newborn my sister's cats pretty much wanted nothing to do with him. For naps on the floor and tummy time they got a little mesh tent thing to put him in so the cats couldn't lie on him if they got the wild urge to. When he came over here for care during the day my own cats either ignored him or actively avoided him.
For my own baby due in a few months I'm going to judge the cats interest in him and if they are keen to cuddle up to him (which I doubt) then either investigate cot netting options or ban the cats from the bedroom.

E: following on from that, now that my nephew is 1 and more mobile he is obsessed with cats. He gets slapped by them. A lot. But even my more violently inclined cat doesn't use his claws, just whacks. Don't know how much this varies with other cats but at least mine seem to have registered on some level that he's a stupid young thing in need of correction rather than an actual threat.

The cloth diapering advice from the first posts is really old. From what I’ve heard from other parents pocket diapers have gotten a lot cheaper & easier to wash.

Someone with a younger baby who exclusively cloth diapered should be able to give some better advice. That person is not me.
