Synthbuttrange posted:What dont you like about the aesthetic? It looks pretty nice. Just not my speed, there's nothing wrong with it (and it's done well, the little space-bunny-marines are hilarious as they flail around in combat besieging enemy ships). The mechanical design is rock solid though, some really smart design at work to address a lot of issues common to 4x games (snowballing, boring mid/endgame, being harshly punished for single battle losses, excessive micro, and probably some others I'm forgetting)

Terminally Bored posted:Out of curiosity: what are the issues with Ys8 currently? Still prone to randomly crashing every now and then on a lot of systems (not as big a deal as you'd think as the game loads up fast and autosaves really often), controller compatibility still a bit wonky, a couple other weird irritations like the odd texture bug and a really weird issue where sometimes the party menu gets stuck with a green tint until you restart the game, but nothing game breaking anymore and the translation is actually passable now. Overall at this point it's worth getting in a heavy sale, in my opinion.

And I'm away from home for work and only have my laptop (GT630 ) but at least that'll give me a chance to play some of the 2D/indie poo poo I haven't gotten through. Tried Wonderboy for a half hour and its great. And I kinda been meaning to play through Castle in the Darkness again, the soundtrack alone is worth it. It's really fun, and you start to feel like a badass as you get used to it and start getting better. It's another of the games like Hotline Miami that would be way better if it didn't get up its own rear end with the plot, though.

RPG Maker is quite popular in Japan and has been for a long time already so yeah, it's been that probably for like 20 years now. What's on Steam is only the very tip of the iceberg. Likewise there are a lot of Japanese RPG maker horror games, the majority of them terrible.

OTOH there are a few extremely good RPG maker games like Yume Nikki that are absolutely worth your time, it's just that they are few and far between and there's loads of garbage.

Recently, Angels of Death came out which is quite good. There's going to be an anime of it coming out this summer, so yeah, it's anime on multiple levels. It's very entertaining nonetheless. There's also Noel the Mortal Fate. I'm enjoying it so far, though obviously it's more anime. And there's Metal as Phuk in case you want less anime and more metal. It is good, and funny as hell.

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2018/07/06/biggest-games-on-steam-2018/ I'm bummed that Civ IV is doing so well when it's reportedly still a terrible game, I'm super bummed that the game made by gamergaters (Kingdom Come) is doing well, and I'm glad Warframe is doing well. I do not understand why Slay the Spire is not at the top of the list, tho, that's like the most addictive game I've ever plated.

I don't doubt that you can make a good RPG Maker game with care and hard work, it's just that I was caught off guard by "RPG Maker as a porn delivery system" having dozens of titles in the on sale list alone during a non-seasonal sale. Meaning there's probably more than that on Steam that aren't currently on sale and even more that aren't on Steam or in English at all. I knew visual novels were the typical easy way of delivering porn as a game-like object, but I wasn't expecting RPG Maker especially since I'm sure it takes more work to make such a game.

He overpriced it big time because it's a tiny (or one-man) unknown dev out of South America asking $20 for a beat-em up, inexplicably got a load of sycophants defending his decision to have no launch discount (or maybe it was only 10% which made his high price still too high I forget) or a reasonable asking price for his game, and then it turns out he made a loving awesome beat-em up so ... good on him I guess? I just remember being so hyped for the game and then seeing the price and just walking away for a while, and then I bought it on a whim because I had money and the inclination to refund the second it went bad and well poo poo he did good. Which does nothing to make me change my tune from saying that he's charging too much because yadda yadda but yeah it's really good. You're just going to have a super hard time convincing anyone to pay $20 without at least a demo (which the game doesn't have but even then) or at minimum a half-price discount. It's a shame because I will totally shill for it but Mother Russia Bleeds is $5 less, 99 Vidas is $7 less and loving Double Dragon Neon is half that price nowadays. Kickass new Monthly reveals and a Chuck Tingle book bundle as well. IGN is doing good work. From time to time.

Oh yeah I get it, I waffled on this game for a long time until it was half off and it's worth it at tenbux. Beatemups are a hard sell in 2018 and beyond for sure without enough content though I think FightNRage offers enough to be worth the tenner. It's more rad than RCR Underground was, which is just a loving mess.
