The only way I could suggest is seeing if there are ones on a lot somewhere and then seeing them in person that way. Later I can see if I can determine where some AZ-1s are on dealer lots.

Go to the vintage museum at Megaweb on Odaiba. They don’t have an AZ-1 that I know of but it is Japanese car pornography.

az-1 is the goal, but I’m down for checking out a lot full of whatever forbidden fruit the city has, so weird dealership recommendations would be awesome.

Welp my girlfriend and I were tired of shoving all of our poo poo into a Mazda 3 or 500 Abarth for camping trips so I made a practical purchase. Just got word last night that the wire went through. 1993 Hiace Super Custom, auto, 4WD with the 2.8l non-turbo diesel. 68xxx km. No significant rust. Interior is absolutely filthy but no rips or tears in the seats. That passenger side mirror missing paint is a bummer but I'm not trying to flip this really, just not lose a bunch of money when I eventually get ADD and want something different so if it really bothers me and I can't find a replacement on Yahoo Auctions I'll probably just paint both of em black or something and be done with it. Looks like I'll need to get the tint re-applied as well. Inspector said the AC compressor wasn't working but Matt's mechanic is saying that might not be the case. Also having him give me a quote on a timing belt replacement since it has a sticker from 38000km but that was 10 years ago and from what I can find on these things that one job requires like 6 different Toyota specialty tools. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Oh and it's hard to see from these angles but it still has the ~Super Custom 4wd~ side decals intact.

Helllllll yeah, I'm real keen to know what these are like. The LiteAce was cool and all but the HiAce is much more serious. Looks like it has a deep blue interior? I'd also have the timing belt done there as working on these engine-under-the-seats vans is going to be a pain in the rear end and much easier to have it done where those things are familiar rather than trying to convince someone here to take the dive.

For the AC: Multiple inspectors have flat out said the "compressor doesn't turn on" and so far, out of the 5~ or so vehicles they've said this on, they all turn on. Might not actually blow more than 'suggestion of cool' temp-wise but if the compressor kicks on then that means the refrigerant has vented normally and needs a re-charge. Our Prado came with warm AC where the compressor kicked on and I popped some R12 in it and it works great, even without tinting that bastard will fridge your rear end anyway. If that HiAce is anything like the Prado the confessor is this big gently caress-off thing and should take well to a conversion if you'd like, otherwise you can't beat keeping it R12.

The seats all have these thin gray dorm room bed sheet looking covers on them right now but from what I could see from the few extra pictures Matt had the interior is pretty much the same as the exterior. Plastics and trim are all that bottom navy blue color and the upholstery is the lighter blue. That was my thinking as well on the timing belt. I was going to try to tackle it myself using an english repair manual but if it really does require all of those specialty tools I doubt it would be much cheaper, and significantly more of a headache, than just having them do it before shipping. I'll stick to doing fluids and filters. Really curious to see how the 4wd does out in the Texas parks!

Definitely looks like a rev2 from the interior and the spoiler, more likely it's had the rev3 lights retrofitted which everybody seems to do. Also if you have an engine bay shot you should be able to tell by the different pcv setup, lack of catchcan and afm.

Mine is a very early rev3 and has 1993 as the manufacture date on the seatbelts, but I've seen plenty of 1993 made rev2 cars also.

Well I can’t speak for the slushbox or the diesel, but the last place I worked had a similar vintage Hiace with 1.3 million km on the clock. That was the 2.4 petrol/manual combo and frankly it was a blast to drive. You needed about half a pallet of beer in the back to have any traction in the wet. I’d hate to do any maintenance with the engine being where it is, even jump starting it could be a pain in the rear end if you couldn’t pull a donor vehicle into a good position.

Today I saw a newer Hiace driving about with both TRD and Type R stickers, so I guess you’ve got something to work towards.

if I haven't posted about MY LANDCRUISER yet, check my bullbars for kangaroo prints

In my old hilux with the same 3L engine (the 2.8D) doing a timing belt was an all day affair that involved removing the radiator to get clearance. On the later 3L turbo motors they adopted the same setup that the bigger 6 pot diesels use- gear drive on the bottom of the motor, so oil pump, vac pump, power steering pump and injector pump are all gear driven, and the timing belt only links the injector pump to camshaft. Those are 20 min belt replacements.

The 3L motor uses a loving perimeter belt that goes all the way from the crankshaft, up to the injector pump, up to the camshaft, down to the idler, then the tensioner, then back to the crank. Thing is about 1.5M long when cut in half. The vacuum pump is incorporated into the back of the alternator, which makes the alternator about $600 and the power steering is driven off a seperate belt to the side of the block.

The very well know saying in Australia is “Always late in a 2.8” cos in a hilux they are GLACIALLY slow. They make 97hp new, at the flywheel.

Change the oil every 5000km. You’ll lunch the big end bearings if you push your luck. Also the oil that comes out of them stains worse than Indian ink. And the filter is mounted sideways and holds about 3/4 of litre of oil. Dunno what they’re like on the hiace, but on the hilux it’s directly above the diff pumpkin.

Have fun! I tore mine out and dropped in a surf 1KZ-TE EFI 3.0L turbo diesel. That thing dyno’d 103hp at the rear wheels on 285/75R16 mud tyres.

Yeah I don't expect this to be anywhere on the same planet as "quick" and I've got the Abarth for scooting around the city and general hoonery. This is going to be strictly camping trips and maybe hitting a few trails to confuse the locals. Thanks for the engine/oil info! JCD's mechanic quoted me just under $900 USD to do the timing belt, tensioners and water pump before it leaves Japan and that sounds much preferable to trying to gently caress with it myself. I'll definitely have fresh fluids and filters in it before the plates go on and will make sure to keep up with the intervals. The Abarth is already kind of annoying to work on with such a tiny engine bay so I can't wait to see what kind of hell I've made for myself with this! :suicide:

gently caress yeah $900 bucks to get all that poo poo done before you get it is an easy sell imho. You're already paying a huge chunk for a personal vehicle so why not edge a bit more on top to simply erase the "gotta do the belts at some point" part. Yeah plus I snagged it for about 110000 yen less than what they're averaging so I don't have a problem putting that back into having some piece of mind that my engine isn't going to grenade a month into owning it. It actually looks like I can order OEM oil filters straight from Amazon. At least the part number matches up to what I've found. They're pretty pricey but at least they're available. You're right in that they are easy to source locally. Official ones are around $60 bucks but I could cheap out with a Dorman for $25 or so. Is that a thing that's ok? I know cheaping out on suspension bits and wheels and things, but a master cylinder?

For the AZ-1 I was looking over it today, thinking about the nicer one I'm getting in, and kind of stepping back and taking it all in. I don't think I'm ever going to be happy with the one I currently have, it's too messed with. The other one is pristine and would be a nicer bit to start with, plus I'm not into the current one for a ton of money considering the costs of them. Thinking I'll repair the rusty floor and then just put it all back together and list it. I might change my mind again.

Brakes I wouldn't, but clutch, ehh, if it shits itself, it's an annoyance rather than a safety issue, and even a cheap one should have a warranty on it. For a car that isn't a daily/only car, I wouldn't have an issue with a cheap one, you can kill one completely and still be cheaper than the "good" one.

What I'd do is get a seal kit for the old one and rebuild it, even if you have a new one fitted. You then have a serviceable replacement on the shelf ready to go, which as we all know acts as a talisman to ward off component failure.
