People want health care and poo poo. If that's your idea of socialism then let's social it up in here"

For decades calling anyone on the left a socialist was a huge insult that the accused had to distance themselves from. She embraces it and they don't know what to do.

I think AOC is great and has a bright future in the party. I also think that pushing for her (or any freshman congressperson) to be speaker immediately is exceptionally dumb. Like, forget the legislation itself—the biggest part of being a leader of a legislative caucus is to get people to vote for things they absolutely do not want to vote for. They've got to be able to convince, to browbeat, or to bribe 230+ people who don't like each other to all vote the same way, as well as managing the business of the House so that only the things they want to be voted on actually come up for a vote. A good speaker isn't someone who comes up with legislation on their own. A good speaker is someone who, once they have good legislation in their hands, can walk up to a representative, physically back them into a corner, and force them to commit to a vote on the spot. poo poo, here's what Lyndon Johnson did over in the Senate: quote:The Treatment could last ten minutes or four hours. It came, enveloping its target, at the Johnson Ranch swimming pool, in one of Johnson's offices, in the Senate cloakroom, on the floor of the Senate itself—wherever Johnson might find a fellow Senator within his reach. Controlling a caucus is hard. It takes iron will, dedication, and the ability to be a real son-of-a-bitch to force someone to vote for something they know will lose them reelection. Paul Ryan couldn't do it. Neither could John Boehner. Pelosi could.

I'm not quite advocating AOC for speaker just yet, since being speaker is a very different thing. But the democrats need a bench, they need more outspoken people, and they need to be outspoken about poo poo people actually want to hear. Popping on CNN every time there's a mass shooting and saying that something needs to be done about it doesn't resonate nearly with as many people as it should. But get someone that's telling people 'you're getting hosed and that's not right' and 'branding' democratic socialism in opposition of the right wing talking points is exactly what needs to be done right now. And that's exactly what's being done, and both parties are dealing with it like some form of drug resistant disease so far. The right is in many cases literally spitting out AOC's platform word for word expecting outrage, and the left is having to defend against it basically saying that they're ok with people getting hosed over.
