Looks like Sears is having its final death throes, as they have until 4pm today to find a buyer. Good* luck to Eddie in finding 4.6 billion dollars to buy it through his hedge fund! *nothing but bad. all the bad, in as many forms as is possible.

Sears had until 4pm EST for all the bids to be submitted. I guess it'll be a few days before they announce what, if any, angel investor came through. Lambert offered 4.6 billion, but as of earlier today he hadn't actually submitted an official bid. Looking up news stories I did see that Sears sold it's home improvement division to service.com for 60 million. So you can still call to order that air conditioner tomorrow.

Better question how is he still able to keep his hedge fund above water using it to constantly keep Sears up enough to limp another year. Hell Sears right now likely will not be able to get any merchandise after this without upfront payments with no credit.

Cut enough and eventually you'll start making money again. Some article said Sears was losing a million dollars a month, which honestly doesn't sound that bad. That's a surmountable problem. The issue is all their debt, so bankruptcy might get them close to the break even mark. I have no illusions about Sear's eventual fate, but who knows.

UCS Hellmaker posted:Better question how is he still able to keep his hedge fund above water using it to constantly keep Sears up enough to limp another year. Hell Sears right now likely will not be able to get any merchandise after this without upfront payments with no credit. The hedge fund owns a ton of the sears properties and collects rent on those and they're all collateral. It collects interest from all of loans it has issued over. It has profited from property that it received from sears that they now lease or have sold. Those can be securitized and profited from that way. Sears still owns a ton of real estate which can be potentially valuable which can be fully stripped with the current plan. Much of the remaining land is pretty worthless though since the only thing of value was the sears. There's also the bruised ego aspect that others have touched on. Lampert merged Kmart and Sears and kmart's numbers had looked pretty good (narrator: they weren't) and he was described as a turn around genius and wall st expected the merged kmart and sears to be a juggernaut. Lampert had grand visions of his ayn randian management style (such as having every department compete against each other for resources so they ended up working against each other rather than complementing and building value) and he probably can't accept he would be wrong about all of that. So I think it is a combination of both, he planned to loot it but expected that it would be a lot more successful so the loot would be much bigger. Now there's some sunk cost fallacy in play due to his hubris (he was a goldman sachs whiz kid too) and he can't stop trying to flip the script back. We don't know how much has been made back and whether he's completely lost money on it or just has made a poo poo return.
