Yeah therr was never a thing where slaves vould fight in your stead (the csa was, uh, touchy about arming slaves) but large slaveowners were exempt from the draft

It's an insidious technique, insisting that "it doesn't define them" or similarly removing from discourse the important point that structural and institutional systems actually can and will remove everything from you. Don't worry about your agency being taken away by a ruthless economic system, as long as you assert yourself within the confines given to you and form a proper consumer based identity you'll be fine.

It's aimed directly at some of the most oppressed communities and seems like a pretty blatant propaganda to convince them that political organizing in their interest isn't actually that important. Like, actually you can gain self worth by realizing you're consenting to your oppression! I guess the hopepunk stuff Vox published isn't much different and is more widespread, but already liberal people obsessing over Harry Potter seems like a sort of organic development. I'd rather have people cosplaying Dumblerdore's Army than doing another Rally to Restore Sanity at least.
