Yeah, it was a weird time. He probably had a point about NAFTA, though the deficit hawkishness would've been counter-productive in 1992. He was basically mute on abortion, which you couldn't possibly get away with today.

I wonder how he does in the counterfactual universe where he didn't drop out before jumping back in.

And 18% is the best a third party candidate has done in the last 100 years.

Ross Perot carried zero states. There was a third party candidate in living memory who carried five, though it's hard to say that he isn't an argument for the two party system...

quote:

President Donald Trump saw his convictions about loyalty upended over the shutdown, harboring shock that Democrats didn’t come over to his side and resentment that he couldn’t keep his own house in order.

According to a Friday Washington Post report, Trump had been operating under the belief that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) would be unable to keep her caucus in line as the shutdown progressed.

“Why are they always so loyal?” he reportedly complained in a staff meeting.

Trump also miscalculated the will of his own party, and voiced belated frustration with former House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) for having “screwed him” by not securing wall funding when Republicans controlled all branches before he’d “gone fishing.”

Ultimately, the defection of six Republican senators who voted for the Democratic funding bill put Trump over the edge.

Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) dropped the bomb that his members were getting unruly; Trump eventually agreed that the shutdown had to end.

congrats, we had a 35-day shutdown because trump thought the dems would cave over the border-wall issue when literally 2 months ago they won a huge flood of house seats solely on the basis of opposing donald trump and his policies. it's true that people had opposed pelosi being speaker but that doesn't mean they'd be willing to give trump what they want...

Trump seriously drinks his own piss and thinks that the reality is that everyone loves him and he is the most popular President ever, and the Dems only won because of their trickery. Anyone who expresses any dislike of him or his policies is just paid by Hillary to say it.

i think they were more comfortable after she gave up a lot of concessions to them. i think she realized what the wave of progressives that were voted in meant so she gave concessions for their votes. probably also argued that she was the best person to stand up against trump. i think it paid off well for both her and the people who wanted her out

and also maybe in your first two years of office you don't take away everything democrats wanted and call the ideas stupid now you literally have no negotiating leverage because everything you're willing to give to the democrats you already convinced your base that it was really bad and dangerous.

he thought that was true when he was willing to "give up" and essentially fund the BRIDGE act which gives dreamers some reprieve but his base and a lot of gop balked at that idea.

i think anything that gives concessions to immigration, gun control, universal health care, climate change is pretty much out of the question for him since he makes fun/attacks it so much. like how is he going to trade the wall funding for climate change bills if he's spending his off-days tweeting that global warming isn't real because its so cold in the midwest.
