devmd01 posted:Because they take money away from already desperately underfunded public schools. I think this needs some fact checking. In texas, charter schools are puplic. They also get funding the same way traditional public schools do, by student attendance. If I remember right they even get less per student than traditional public schools do. I don't see how public schools are going to be better funded if their class sizes are already out of control. Common sense would say that funding per child needs to increase across the board and their issues have nothing to do with charter schools.

In theory charter schools can be good because they have more discretion in curriculum and learning style than fully public schools without the insane cost of private schools. If I had gone to the school my wife went to maybe I would have actually graduated rather than dropping out and going straight to community college. gently caress public school so much. Funding is its own can of worms.

In most states, charter schools function as a legal loophole for parents to shunt special needs kids and at-risk youth from their community into a separate but equal school system. If this problem was substantively addressed, I don't think I'd have any more issue with public/private partnership than I do with any other configuration of private schools There are good and bad charters and this is actually a nuanced issue Vulture Culture fucked around with this message at 15:46 on Jan 30, 2019 |

It’s funny you say that, everyone always assumed that our charter school was a privileged elite school while it simultaneously got the reputation of being where the screw-ups went to avoid the actual school for delinquents.
|
# ? Jan 30, 2019 15:48 |

One of the principal issues with charters is that they can be selective with admissions, so it’s easier to game the system by kicking out or refusing to admit special needs, disruptive, or just plain underperforming kids which disproportionately affects minority and underprivileged kids. It’s the same issues with many places having defacto segregation via private schools, except now it’s free to attend so it sucks even more students out of the existing system dooming it to failure. Accountability and oversight are also a mess as they often fall under statewide regulations bypassing local school boards under unelected agencies that may or may not have the capability or will to be involved or respond to local concerns.

All schools suck, just the one my wife went to sucked the least because they actually cared about students enough to treat them with respect and focus on the individual’s needs. Unlike the time the principal of my charter school suspended me because someone tried to stab me with a pen and she “didn’t have time” to deal with it.

labor is abused as gently caress in charter schools too. They are not just prep schools for the layman and were the single worst place to land as a teacher. Look at NO or DET to see that they perform no better or worse than public schools and do so without oversight. Hell, the "online charter school of the future" in Ohio straight up committed fraud with student counts.
