It's true even for a competently designed electric car. The amount of energy you'd need to make continuous near-full-torque, off-the-line starts would generally overheat the batteries unless the cooling system was sized for close to the motor's inrush current, which, for any sane mass-market electric car, it would not be

Gotta admit custom-made speeders for that purpose would be very cool, though

you know i realized today that a (non-tesla) electric car would probably make a great patrol vehicle since it could sit around for long periods of time doing nothing, then immediately go from that to rapid acceleration to intercept someone speeding

The tough part for police uses would be that a lot of departments "hot seat" their cars. It's not unheard of for a police car to go from oil change to oil change without having been shut off for anything more than refueling (and sometimes not even that). Obviously EVs wouldn't play ball with this.

If we're talking custom vehicles then automated battery swapping could possibly solve that issue as long as they could reliably provide enough range for a single shift. Change batteries when you change drivers, etc. The problem with custom vehicles of course is that economies of scale are huge in the automotive world, especially when dealing with fleets.

The idea of putting charging stations in common police "campsites" with quick-disconnect connectors that could just be driven away from popped in to my head for a second but dedicated police charging stations would be larger targets for vandalism than Tesla chargers ever could be so that's a terrible idea.

EVs can "idle" for a very long time, a 100 kw battery has enough energy for an american family home for like 3 days.

I was talking about how to charge a hot-seated car that only stops at the station for shift change. Anyways, obviously the idea of putting charging stations where cop cars tend to sit doing traffic patrol is half baked and bad for a lot of reasons. It's only really workable with battery swapping or just telling those departments to suck it up and buy more cars.

hey some people want to be this aggro but i just want trains and buses in urban areas that run so consistently and have such good routes that unless you're moving a piano you'd be a dumbshit to do anything else

rural areas can preserve their way of life or whatever ive never hosed a pickup truck but im sure its fulfilling im just saying that for moving people around a city its harder to come up with a more destructive and inefficient method than cars but elon will keep doing it anyway
