As disgusting as the game is, this just kind of proves the concept that there's an audience for everything.

I'm just going to say that every episode needs to have Scabs in it somehow. I'm ignoring everything that happened in the game because it hurts to pay attention to, so kitty is the balm that keeps me going. That, and being able to ignore everything and listen to you and your co-commentator talk about random stuff.

new things I hate - the passage about how alex wants to own the memory of not!elisa because it's "intimate", which is uncomfortable knowing the subtext of alex as developer - panda. where the gently caress do you get off acting like this at people - alex has a stronger visual reaction shot to a new arcade opening than to not!elisa being dragged into the void before his eyes while she begs him to save her - "RPG games" - being able to go up to goth teens only to insult them and tell them you don't want anything from them - "OCD Mother" being a throwaway gag - the equipment shop screen not displaying stat comparisons things I hated previously and still hate now - alex not commenting at all on seeing the not!elisa gif when he had two narration flashback screens of talking about the possibility of women he went to high school with doing porn, and also one for elephant porn for some reason - the chatroom having a bit where not!elisa, whose representation is almost a one-to-one reference to actual elisa's elevator video, gets called unattractive and the most vehement opposition is "I wouldn't call her that". and then that just passes by and the game does nothing with it. insulting and pointless things I don't hate - michael calling these games that came out in-universe like three or four years ago the holy grail of his youth. he's like 18 at the oldest? so it's reasonable for him to feel like that things I actually like - that you don't go into people's houses but instead talk to them at the door. nice touch - inquiring teen scouting dates for her mlm brother

nine-gear crow posted:Starting to think the boys at ACKK Studios might have some unexamined problems with women... It's the typical inciting incident across all media, though I don't deny the writers might have some issues after this poo poo. After she dies the hero commits suicide and ends up in "Heaven", and realizes he can go back to his world but the path to the afterlife is blocked to him. This makes him become a reckless thrill seeker, and after seeing the colours of Heaven, he tries to find the colours that exist in his world because...actually I forget why but whatever. Anyway, this actually becomes a central element of the game, anytime you die you end up back in Heaven and can hop back down to carry on. Admittedly gets annoying in boss fights, but it's a unique concept. One reason I guess I kept playing is because Heaven did change, you get access to new areas, some side quests and even some optional boss fights (which rewarded weapons that had colour and might even have decent hit detection!). Like you gotta admit, being able to get side-tracked by the game over screen is a cool idea. Seraphic Neoman fucked around with this message at 00:10 on Feb 8, 2019 |

The scene where a woman is narrating a description of the android's bedroom from a first person plural omniscient perspective is basically just a straight pastiche of Haruki Murakami's After Dark. Which makes me realize that a deadbeat "everyman" looking for a missing cat, mysterious phone calls that seem to be for someone else, and a weird supernatural being appearing to coach the protagonist are all hallmarks of Murakami stories.

So a thing that bugs me about YIIK that I haven't seen anyone bring up. Alex is a music hipster. Loving music is one of his big quirks. He fights using a music-themed rhythm minigame and so do at least two other characters as far as I know. He gets a phone call early on alluding to "hearing the music". There is no connection whatsoever between the actual game music and the rhythm minigames. There is so much you could do with interaction between the record-player theme and the battle music and it's just not there at all, the music appears to be randomly-chosen tracks and interacts in no way with what you do to the record.

For taking place in 1999 everyone looks and talks like 2006-2009 era hipsters. I'm pretty sure vinyl records were at their nadir in the late 90s even among ironically cool people. Like this game theoretically stars Gen Xers but feels like a lot more like a Millennial's game.

Yep. The mistake here might be in expecting the game to make sense. Seems clear to me that Alex is in fact mid-20s and Michael about 17 - still in HS for the testing.

yeah, that's what gets me for a game that's about the 90s, it is a scattershot range of 80s (Alex's computer is more what a computer form the 80s look like) and the Aughts - nobody in the 90s used Vinyls it was considered obsolete.

Made a checklist of things I hate - Everything about that bird - The artstyle - The main character - The voice acting, the use of it as narration. - The fact that you cant click on the wrong person when you want to talk to someone. - The way the kids talk in this game. Screw that, the way almost everyone talks in this game - THE FULLHOUSE HOUSE? - I did wonder if the gamer guy was supposed to be a mouthpiece for the game's creator and his love of the 90s. But then later the character sees the record with 'music from a better era'. So I am not even sure which era the creator has a hard on for. - Who owns a SNES in 1999 but not a N64? - Suddenly there's monsters and everything. Worldbuilding, whats that? (I never played Earthbound, but I imagine it was done better there?) - The battle system and the minigame. Of all things to take from, you take the judgment ring from shadow hearts? and thats just the first part

Who's in the mood for another taste of combat? So you know how almost every action requires you to play a minigame first? What if one of them breaks and you can't do anything about it? Well, you're hosed. Also peep these damage values. Also this is pretty late in the game so spoilers, you get an airship in the form of a car and you fight a parody(?) of a beloved 80s franchise
