Just ordered a newELM ODB Dongle the other day. As soon as I saw it confirmed shipped - found the old one. Right there in the port in my car.

Hi. I've got 3 generic bluetooth dongles now. Two that I've had for a while, then couldn't find them to scan the BMW when I first got it. Looked everywhere, even places I KNEW they would be. Never found them and ordered another. Then I found BOTH of the missing ones in the compartment inside the center armrest compartment. I very effectively hid them from myself. :{

That sucks. I have had zinc poisoning once and it is something I have worked really hard to avoid doing ever again. Depending on the base material, I dunk any thing that might have a zinc coating in hydrochloric acid. Cleans the zinc right off. Obviously doesn’t work if the zinc is in the alloy.

I use the 3m 2097 filters as they fit under my welding mask. Helps avoid issues with minor amounts of metal vapors. No replacement for ventilation though.

You must know my mother in law. She hides everything because she thinks somebody is gonna steal it. We put a locator that loudly beeps on her keys, and she will bury them so deep somewhere you can't tell where the beeping is coming from. Some of her favorite hiding spots include in her shoes under her dresser, and in her pillow. My wife has to go through every pocket of every article of clothing she donates because she hides money and (loving expensive) jewelry in the pockets of clothes. She once found a pair of diamond earrings in a coat pocket that were worth thousands.

We had three at one point and this was our driveway - the red was the one I grew up camping in & the one he took my mom on their second date with to Burro Schmidt's Tunnel (lolol), the green one he bought out of texas and had restored. Third yellow one is not pictured but was pretty mint:

Throttle bodies in normal cars get dirty because they actually get driven daily.

^^^ This. The PCV hose is connected to the intake ducting right in front of the throttle body, so it gets a bit gnarly from regular fumes, blowby, etc. There's no PCV valve on my engine, it's just a hose from the valve cover to the silencer.

(and it has almost 170k... so yeah, there's probably a bit more blowby than what it left the factory with)

So the CDC (non-US goons: Centers for Disease Control) gave us a visit. We got chosen supposedly at random to go through health screenings. I got through it with just the verbal part. GF got selected to do the full workup (physical, blood work, STD check, etc). They did the interview stuff today (took about 2 hours), and they're coming back to do bloodwork, a physical, etc over the weekend (bringing a mobile lab to the apartment). The guy who did the initial door quiz on both of us mentioned she had a much higher likelihood of being chosen for the full Monty because she identifies as Hispanic, and well, yup, at the end of the quick door quiz, his tablet said she'd become one of the chosen ones.

Her physical health is pretty much picture perfect except for her resting heart rate (because ADD meds), though she's borderline underweight. Mine is... not as great (diabetes, overweight, multiple meds, etc). I guess she's gonna paint a hell of a rosy picture for our county. :v: And yes, she's getting paid for it ($200). We got a mailer a few months ago about it, and they were drat persistent in getting both of us together at the door for the past month. BIG BROTHER REALLY IS WATCHING!!1!

Even when I was working at backstreet garages I don't think I ever came across a car that needed a throttle body cleaned that wasn't a symptom of a greater problem. It's not really a maintenance item on anything anymore

In my case, it was more of a "holy poo poo, that thing looks filthy, I should clean it" aka "while I'm in here" thing I decided to do.

Rule #1 of driving a beater: never fix too many things at once. You anger the car gods. I angered the car gods by replacing struts, sway bar end links, attempting to fix the parking brake, replacing the MAP sensor, getting an alignment, and attempting to clean the throttle body.

I found a different re-learn procedure online, but it requires the engine remaining between 5C-100C. The cooling fan kicks in at 105C. It requires enough idling that the fan kept coming on, but I started with a car that had been parked for a couple of hours (so about halfway cooled off), and I was parked in my garage, so no real airflow (overhead door was open, so exhaust was mostly going outside). It's supposed to be 2C overnight, garage should stay above 5C, so I'll give it another shot tomorrow when the engine is cold (battery is also disconnected for now).

It's idling at 1500 after a few attempts at the latest relearn I found (previously 2500+; the car would do over 40 mph without touching the throttle, so long as I upshifted at the right time and kept it on flat ground), but since the engine kept getting hot enough for the fan to kick on, I don't think the relearn really completed. If another relearn with the engine cold doesn't do it (note: "cold idle" on this is 1000 RPM, warm idle is 750 RPM), then I'm going to try a used throttle body from a junkyard. If that doesn't work, I'll order a new OEM throttle body and just deal with the car acting like it wants to do 50 mph everywhere until it shows up.

It comes down to fuel quality. It's very common to coke the poo poo out of throttles in China and countries with less refined fuel. Not sure if your fuel is better across the pond than here, besides the octane.

It's normal to have a bit due to PCV oil vapors getting sucked back in and usually doesn't need cleaning unless you're really up there in miles.

That sucks dude.....What does being exposed to zinc like that actually do to you? Does it go away for good or is it something like mercury that can build up in your system?

Once I was spraying a dead tree that was infested with termites with Termidor which is really nasty poo poo...Some of it splashed on to my face and a few drops went on my lips. I ran into the house and was flushing with water but after a few minutes my mouth and face started going numb and I freaked out. From what my instructor says, it takes a few hours to get the worst of the symptoms and it stays in your system for a few days. As long as the exposure is low, it's pretty harmless long term. High exposure can cause pneumonia/death and long term, higher level exposure can cause permanent lung and nerve damage
Apparently some people can develop a resistance to it, but I don't want to think about how much poisoning people took to find that out

E: I was trying to get a brake piston unstuck and used the air compressor to try push it out. I forgot to make sure the air fitting sealed properly and ended up aerosolizing, and then breathing in 30 year old brake fluid.

BITTER POOR PERSON
Right out of high school I worked for two years in a lumber mill and didn't really take hearing protection seriously. Also used to go to a lot of live concerts with the same lack of concern.

Now I have mild tinnitus. Don't really notice it when there's any background noise above a whisper, but any time its quiet or I'm wearing earplugs or similar there's an unmistakable ringing in my ears.

Sup tinnitus buddy, except mine's pretty bad with noticeable hearing loss. The tinnitus was mild (and came and went) when I was a kid.

Then I got a car, and immediately put subs in it and drove with it cranked to 11 all the time. Then raves and concerts happened through all of my 20s and 30s. And at 40 I still have an okay stereo in the car, also cranked to 11 most of the time.

:highfive: Tinnitus buddy. We do yearly hearing tests, mine has gotten worse in the ~10 years I've been working in HPC. Mild tinnitus at the moment and doing everything I can to slow it. Dad worked supercomputers for 38 years and had ringing for the past 10 at least. He's retired now but got really nice tinnitus specific hearing aids right before he retired. I wear ear plugs for everything now.
