The Orville Comes to Heroclix(???) How would this even work? From what I know of Heroclix, it's basically a Warhammer-type game where you have miniature squads full of X-men and Supermen and other comic book heroes and use them to fight against your friends' squads. How do you even model an Orville crew for a game like that?

Regy Rusty posted:I really like that they're consistently showing and having the characters comment on the friction between the Moclans and the rest of the union. It's pretty clear that the union relies on Moclan technology (this episode's first third basically served to demonstrate that) but the way the Moclans run their world is impossible for other species like humans and Xelayans to accept in good conscience. I hope they continue to examine this and I'd be very interested to see what happens if some kind of bigger political breakdown occurs. It seems they've been gradually ramping up the "hosed up culture" factor over the series: First they show us their policy of doing sex change surgery on female babies (which is at least done with medical tech advanced enough that it doesn't compromise their quality of life), then we see the "divorce by stabbing" thing, and now this. I have a feeling this is building up to something, likely either a major social upheaval on Moclus or some threat to Moclan/Union relations. Though what I don't get is how those parts of their culture remained unknown to the Union at large for so long - even if the Moclans were never full members of the Union, surely someone would have gotten it in their heads to study Moclan culture in-depth.

This was totally an Alara episode. The whole "black sheep" thing is written for Alara to the point where Talla basically responds with "I'm not Alara actually," and during the shield trial you can hear Mercer say "Alara, what's going on?" over the comm.

I think its not that no one knows, but more that Ed never met a moclan before, which he even says in the pilot, and he's slowly learning more about them. Like, I'm sure he could have gone to someone at the union whos served with moclans before, or is a cultural expert if he really wanted the low down on all their customs. Thats again, like I said before, why I think its so great we've seen a minimum of like, 31 different species on the orville or other union posts. They're all going to have their own deep customs, is the captain going over like 100 detailed write ups on all the cultural customs of xelayans, Daan's people, the giant flower people, the gelatinous blobs, the porn seller aliens, the interim security guy, the horned bartender or the dozens more we've seen on camera?

Lol if you watched this episode and your main takeaway was "ugh interpersonal drama" and "where are the explosions" or "why didn't anyone reverse the polarity of the quantum burrito field" Making a social tweak to a fake species to attempt to examine our own real world poo poo is nearly the pinnacle of a sci fi concept and that was a good episode

Also because it follows the Alara can’t find love thread. I think this also answers the “why insist on another Xelayan Security Officer” nitpick; because the scripts needed less adjusting that way.

Yeah the last two episodes sold me on Talla. There are some forced things with her being so friendly with and knowledgable about the crew so quickly. That said I think her character works with the quick integration.
