Speaking of that lovely umbrella

IDK if it's just because I was at attack power 6 or so, or if the normal umbrella attack is just pretty strong (I didn't have it the first go 'round), but the Lilac Umbrella does a huge hunk of Headless Ape's health, and because of how it blocks the scream, you're gonna want it equipped anyways. It let me go much more aggressive against him, rather than backing off and waiting to deflect the sword combo for the spear attack.

Honestly? I don't think the Burden, or NG+ does jack poo poo. The game doesn't feel any different and I'm on my third run and this time I'm going full-on Burden, though I have the charm. I think it's all placebo.

Giving up the charm makes you take damage when you block.

Yeah, I realized it too late to make use of it but that was maybe the strongest attack I had. With built in turtling and costing a single emblem, I'm going to go ahead and suggest that struggling players explore the umbrella. I actually did use it on the Iaido guy end game when he has red eyes. Spinning the red version stunned him because he was afraid of the fire effect on it, I thought that was cool.

It's actually a subtle distinction and design choice, but one that fundamentally changes up the formula and dances with the philosophy of the rest of the game which is "GET IN THERE"

Miyazaki & Co are loving genius at interface design.

You say that, but I was correct, holding the dodge button while neutral no longer preps you for a sprint and instead does a forward dodge WHILE prepping you to sprint. You can no longer sprint from a standstill without dodging first. It makes doing long jumps off of small rooftops and stuff really annoying and clumsy. They could have had neutral press = forward dodge and neutral hold = prep for sprint, but they did not. Weird oversight imo.

edit: They seem to actually have gone backwards regarding the dodging and have reverted to something people historically did not like about Dark Souls 1's controls, which is that the dodge happens on button press and not button release. This means it is impossible to sprint without doing a dodge first in general, not just from neutral.

further edit: Here's how it works in the souls games compared to Sekiro:

DS1: Dodge happens on button press, invisible timer counts down for a split second if you hold and transitions to sprinting state when it runs out
DS2+3: Dodge happens on button release, nothing happens on press and the sprinting state transition is the same
Bloodborne: Dodge happens on release and the game queues the action so that you can actually continue to hold it UNTIL the sprinting state and release to do a dodge, sprinting state transition itself is the same
Sekiro: Dodge happens on button press, sprinting state automatically begins after dodge, no way to enter sprinting state at all without dodging first

Bloodborne had the most advanced version of the system, but they've gone three games backward and it doesn't seem to serve any purpose. One of the few things about the controls that genuinely annoys me.

You hold R2 and then time L1 for deflects without additional emblem cost? does it work against combo chains? im having trouble deflecting couple bosses

Absolutely DS1's Dodge was on button up, not down. Maybe if you were locked on and holding a direction that you can't run? Since you could only run forwards in DS1. I vastly prefer Sekiro's method since in all the other games button up dodging added a small delay to your reaction time in executing a dodge.

Actually backstep was maybe on button down which is what you're talking about mainly I think. Sekiro can't backstep because he ain't about that life.

You are probably right, I might be confusing the two inputs. I guess my point is, they have all the individual pieces of a dodging system but they've never really put the jigsaw together to make something that works universally. I've definitely gotten hit before because Sekiro dodged first before starting to sprint, which slows you down a bit as he comes out of the dodge part, and it's a bummer.

Now I'm in the market for a new one (since I'm on PC I've got some choice) and was wondering whether anybody happens to have any recommendations? So far I've been using a simple 360 controller which worked well enough, but are there perhaps any better alternatives around nowadays?

It costs an extra emblem but lets you deflect without putting it away first, and might be the point where it starts having a damage storing effect for the r1.

yo so I did some farming before starting NG+ and I gotta say, my new favorite prosthetic tool is probably sen throw. It's great for staggering enemies and deals a lot of posture damage, and if you time it right it lets you just go full on aggression without even having to stop for counterattacks :haw: You just weave it in with your R1's and it melts even the annoying enemies.

I'd almost say you don't need more than 1 gourds for that last phase because there's very little room to heal anyways, but having a ress left is pretty helpful.

The point of no return for doing the steps for the endings is (being as generic as possible)killing the boss of the area where the incense takes you to

More specific spoilerI was able to complete the steps for both endings after beating the corrupted monk in the fountainhead, the cutoff appears to be killing the dragon because then kuro moves and you can't talk to him before the end
