Basically, I haven’t seen it personally but from what I understand they hacked the show up so much that a lot of fans generally consider the Cardcaptor dub to be a separate series entirely.

I meant that the pokemon names like pikachu are like the names of animals like cat or dog. Sparky and Zippo are given names like Fido or Mr Whiskers. Not using the localised version of pikachu or charmander would be like calling dogs inu. It's weird.

It's been two decades and I still don't understand the notion that Battle Frontier and Orange League "don't count". There's no logic to it. It's not even a "they're not in the games" thing cuz the the BF is in the games. Winning over a team of 10 experienced trainers and being recognized as worthy of joining their ranks apparently matters less than winning against a bracket of people who are usually gym challengers themselves? Why? They're clearly a cut above gym leaders. It's just a forced rationalization to keep from recognizing the character's genuine accomplishment. Fair point re: Battle Frontier, but winning the Orange League was really not a very impressive accomplishment; it was just 4 Gym Leaders and an Elite One, with no tournament or Champion. Danny's challenge, at least, was actually difficult, and Cissy's challenge was rather unfairly specialized to the point where you basically have to be a Water-type specialist to win, but it's still not really comparable to a full league.

The "full league's" contestants have included a guy using a Bellsprout and a girl with a Quilava. Ash himself entered multiple tournaments with unevolved Pokemon. The difference isn't as stark as you're making it out to be.

You mean a girl with a Bellsprout. And I think Jeanette's Bellsprout is supposed to be one of those Pokemon that somehow gets stronger by choosing not to evolve, like Ash's Pikachu and Squirtle. Actually, the Bellsprout line in the anime seems to become less useful the more it evolves, to the point where Jessie trading James's Victreebell away for a Weepinbell was portrayed as a harsh but sensible decision, which only turned out badly because the Weepinbell evolved into another Victreebell.
