yeah I’ll admit I respect the grift that produced that book because it was nothing more than a dumb non-digital discourse knower going on a couple 4chan safaris and extrapolating it out into a massive media tour what bugged me was the way her credibility was taken as a given by that professor, who was very nice but also a caricature of a campus dilettante encouraging people to write semester length essays about the number of microaggressions expressed in a single twitch session or something. everything related to history or sociology, for her, had to be “activist”, and didn’t require reproducibility or consistency because she felt examples of problematic social trends were valuable enough themselves, which I don’t even disagree with, but still has the effect of greatly diminishing the academic legitimacy of her projects. that class was incredibly dire and Nagel for some reason was the perfect fit we also read a book in that class that correctly pointed out the US Army was the worlds leading polluter and neocolonial entity, with a particularly fascinating focus on how Indian reservations were specifically abused by US military policy in the first half. then the second half was all essentializing activism proceeding from the idea that all native people are inherently spiritual and connected with the earth in a way that made their warfare kind and their conception of ecology naturally harmonious, and it came off racist as hell I’m rambling a bit here it theres a very specific mileu that uses academic language in combination with spurious claims to sell a gross type of progressivism and Nagel is part of that constellation of disingenuity

Its barely a debate because the David french/rick wilson nevertrumper wing of the R's is probably literally like 3-5% of the party, which was hilarious to see them discover in real time in 2015-2016. I think they legit thought they were at least a third or so lol.

I don’t remember the book that well but I do recall generally feeling like it was barely even decent anthropology because she clearly didn’t actually understand the culture of the Chan boards, she just made a halfhearted effort to learn the vernacular and history to make herself seem well versed to lay people recently in this thread, maybe elsewhere, some posters were talking about reading frenworld posts and being able to parse them without conscious effort because they’re so brain poisoned by this poo poo. I don’t think Nagel could do that
