You must be a masochist
It looks like Usenetserver and Frugal Usenet (my current unlimited provider) are on the same backbone, but the former has longer retention with fewer connections. May use it as a backup to my backup block account where speed isn't a concern, at least until the other shoe inevitably drops.

Anyone with Usenet Direct able to move data? I've been doing some backfilling and all of a suddent NZBGet is giving me an Authentication Failed error. Logging into their site seems fine.

e: looks like this is most likely related to them changing poo poo over today, hopefully no issues.

e2: sorted, but hm not encouraging so far. Redownloading something I grabbed earlier but accidentally deleted... went from 100% completed on UD to 33%. Less than 100 days old too :/ Next thing is 0%. I'll try something super new....

We have a new low of $25 for 18 months ($1.39 a month) https://www.thundernews.com/billinginfo.php?currency=USD&pricepointid=20191825

They're a Highwinds/Omicron reseller.

UsenetServer's $20 a year deal is still active and it comes with a VPN subscription https://accounts.usenetserver.com/register/?step=p&promo=exclusive-usenet-deal&rate=107

I just got the Usenetserver email. Haven't been in the game for like five years. Are they still a decent provider?

I'm having some kinda problem with Plex, very often when i click on a new tv-show i have recently downloaded i get a "Playback Error - There was an unexpected error during playback". It has never happened with a movie.
And basically the gist of it is that i find something that fixes it and then next time i check it it's broken again.

I have a Radarr/Sonarr/SABnzbd setup all on my Synology NAS that has two drives/volumes, the Plex server is installed on the NAS via the package center and the only plugin running is Sub-Zero Subtitles. These are the things i have tried:
  • Updating Plex when it says there's a update. No effect.

  • Googling and comparing error logs told me that the database might be corrupt. So i just deleted the com.plexapp.plugins.library.db database file like it said you could do on the Plex support page to get a fresh database. Worked for a bit, broken next time i checked again.

  • More googling said that it could be an issue with the permissions and ownership of the Plex filestructure on the NAS, so i made sure Plex had complete ownership and control over the files/folders. I can't remember if this did anything, it's all starting to melt together a bit. I think it worked fine for a bit after that i restarted the Plex server and refreshed the meta data.

  • I started poking around in the log file and the only thing i could find that looked like a big error to me was this:
    code:
No file found at path /volume1/Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Media/localhost/8/9cea8bd93dc6be4148e6d57fea0b7e86338264f.bundle/Contents/Subtitle Contributions/com.plexapp.agents.thetvdb.xml
This got me thinking that it might be a subtitle problem, so i started poking around in the Sub-Zero Subtitles settings and i found that it had URLs to Sonarr and Radarr that were wrong since i switched ISP and therefore router. I updated them to the correct URLs and everything worked again, but this morning several new shows are broken again and won't start.
Anyone got any kind of idea what could be wrong?

Edit: Tried just reinstalling Plex completely today, we'll see if it sticks.

Question about subscribing to both NGD & Newshosting:

Does UsenetExpress draw from NewsHosting at all?
If NGD draws from UsenetExpress and that in turn draws from Newshosting, then maybe you could run into redundancy if you subscribe to both NGD & Newshosting

Or is UsenetExpress completely independent of Newshosting?? (No backfill etc)

They're all separate. UsenetExpress was used to get NewsgroupDirect off the ground after the switch, but it's on its own now with its own retention. I think they're trying to come to an agreement with another provider (Abavia is really the only other one with decent retention) to provide older articles.

Getting a cheap unlimited plan from Newshosting plus a block or second unlimited from an independent provider is a good way to go.

I only use blocks now, it's worth taking the time to compare how much data you'll need. My net cost for usenet.farm is roughly $2/month, maybe even a little less. I download roughly 84gigs a month from them.

Edit: I just did the math, I've spent roughly $1.83/month on usenet since 2015 with usenet.farm

Is it somehow possible to tell sonarr/radarr to look for releases with at least one or two subtitle tracks? I'd like to at least get an english/spanish subtitle track on each of my movies so that my non-english speaking dad can enjoy my Plex library.

You can actually set Plex to auto-download subtitles when you use the Plex movie agent instead of themoviedb.

what?
One feature that was really nice on .org was it displayed images associated with posts in the post page, as well as having a mouseover popup on the main browse/search lists. It was nice when unsure about the quality of an unusually sized release or a cam/TS/TC, and of course it was great when browsing the XXX section

I'm using Geek and DS now but neither of them seem to offer this feature, or at least it's off by default and well hidden. Am I missing something, or are there other indexers that do this like org used to?

edit: or I'm an idiot and I have no idea how I didn't see the links on DS...

edit2: Definitely not as good as .org was though, it seems to only grab sample images from the first minute or so, leading to a lot of images of title cards in the movie section.

Even if you don't get premium it's worth hanging onto a free account in case your primary indexer folds up
If you use nzbhydra you can just set the api limits and itll just get used a couple of times a day

Do the unlimited usenet providers throttle if you download too much?

I wasn't really thinking about it and downloaded 700GB yesterday, and now I'm getting fractional speeds... I looked online and the owner says there aren't any caps, but it's just super weird how consistently it's happening today. It would be a huge bummer if it was throttling, since I paid for a year of Ninja.

e: excuse me I should be more clear that my provider is Newsgroup Ninja.

Hmm, I have AT&T. There are no data caps, but I suppose that doesn't stop them from throttling. I just did a speed test and the speeds seem to be pretty normal, but it's totally possible that speed tests are treated differently by the provider... I don't know much about it.

I have At&T fiber and have done similar amounts without issue on Newshosting and other backends priced similarly. Might just be a blip, might be what you’re downloading. Give it a day or two and if it’s still the same then it’s worth investigating.

Last I checked nzb.su has no API at all without VIP & it's about $10/year.
They also take credit card (through a real processor) as well as Bitcoin so you don't have to deal with that bullshit.

I've been using them for a long time but just using the 10 free api hits on tabula Rasa has increased my backfill quite significantly, so I'm probably going to move elsewhere when my VIP expires next

I had to get some niche stuff that I could only find on some file sharing sites like rapidgator. I did a little looking to automate things and there's a huge community around this stuff it seems like. I found a download manager called jdownloader and there's all sorts of functionality and integrations to get around captcha, recaptcha, deconstructing links, etc. I also found out there are services you can join to automate filling out captchas for like $.0008 per captcha so you can queue up a whole bunch of downloads and then it's all handled automatically.

I had no idea. It seems like a poo poo ton of work so you don't have to spend $15 a month for the premium download tier of file sharing sites. Anyone else ever look into this stuff?
