Okay VLC is clearly a clusterfuck.

What are everyone's recommendations for the same level of "install it and forget about it" these days?

mpv

mpv is a mplayer fork and is more or less a player frontend for ffmpeg and only interacts with internets/streams through youtube-dl these days. youtube-dl and ffmpeg are updated frequently so any issues will probably get fixed promptly

if you need a gui around it for some reason, smplayer still exists and has support for mpv

the equifax settlement is a fixed pool of money, everyone who applies for it reduces the individual payout

by the time they send the checks out next year theyll be for $7

https://www.theverge.com/2019/7/26/8932398/equifax-settlement-125-claim-wont-get-money-alternative-reimbursement-compensation

quote:

But the likelihood that you’ll actually get a check for $125 is increasingly slim — because the more people who sign up, the less money each person gets. In fact, there’s only room for 248,000 people to get that amount.

If 1 million people ask for the money, they’ll be eligible for just $31 each.

If every single one of the 147 million affected people sign up, they’ll be looking at 21 cents.

See, while Equifax has agreed to a $700 million settlement — compare to its revenue of $880 million last quarter alone — it’s technically only a $425 million settlement as far as affected consumers are concerned, with the rest of the money going to pay penalties.

And of that $425 million, it turns out only a paltry $31 million is actually set aside for those individual $125 cash payments — the rest is all for free credit monitoring, reimbursements, or if you could somehow miraculously prove you actually suffered identity theft as a result of the breach.

i think its more that applications use services to handle privileged tasks without giving the user UAC prompts. and then if you're gonna have a service why not make it a web service. For a raid controller this might also be useful if its intended for management over a network.

yeah, it's not a remotely new trend. the only thing that's changed is that security researchers have started pointing out all the problems with how it's done.

i remember when the tuneup mp3 tagger released version 3 as a forced update with an entire mongodb/tomcat/django stack and the resulting anger from their customers caused the company to implode. the original engineers who were driven out by management before they decided to hire accenture of all people to rewrite it inherited the carcass and went back to 2.x but the damage was done.

well gently caress i've been wondering for years why those things were hundreds of MBs like a decade ago but this is the first time someone's provided me with any insight whatsoever about what was actually in there

like i always assumed it wasn't injecting 100 MB worth of ring 0 code up my kernel's rear end, but-

wait please tell me there's something that would preclude shoving all of java and tomcat into the kernel
