Thanks, that's solid advice, luckily there's plenty of time to hash out our plan. Currently the plan is to stay for a day or two in Glasgow, then rent the car and drive to Isle of Skye, and see what we find between it and Edinburgh during the week. My only worry is that week is not enough and we won't have able sober driver if we hit those distillery's too often.

My guy Scotland's West Coast is loving beautiful. One of my uncles lives in Fort William and we flew into Glasgow and drove out. At a certain point the terrain changes from regular UK rolling countryside to this raw rocky landscape, it's gorgeous. You'll drive past Loch Lomond on the way which again is beautiful. We took the trip over to Skye and again the views are stunning, on the way up there in the morning it was foggy and we drove up the hill above the fog hanging in the valley. A bit later the fog started to clear and as we descended we drove past another Loch (Duich I think) and there was mist just hanging over it... We drove into Skye over the Skye bridge and then on up to Portree which is an adorable little spot. If you're going to Skye you need to carry on up the road to check out the Storr and go for a hike up there, it's a bit of effort but the views out over the other little islands is so so worth it. Skye itself is a beautiful island and it's one of the most geologically diverse ones around apparently. We drove back down to the South of the island and got the ferry back to Mallaig, check the times on these and make sure you're early if you're getting the last one back. We got to experience a nice stormy crossing and I got loving soaked standing up front on the top deck.

I've been to a lot of places and if I'm honest, that area of Scotland feels like home. I really hope you enjoy your time up there.

(and can't post for 11 years!)

So instead of walking into another dealer and getting blindsided by the four square and high pressure guilt trips from their finance managers, I decided I'm going to bring my own financing.

I use Capital One for my banking. I applied online. 7%, with a cosigner that's a risk manager's wet dream (6 figure income just from work, plus ex-military and SSI income, zero debt, credit score well into the 800s). Are you loving kidding me? There's a credit union right up the street (1/3 of a mile). Biked up there, realized I forgot my ID at home (I'd applied online, but got declined because of the fraud alert on my credit files), came back home, got ID, went back up, spent 15 minutes with the branch manager, walked out with checking and savings accounts, a handful of temporary checks, and a brand new debit card. They said they can usually do 3-4% on older used cars, 2-3% on newer used, 0.5-1% on brand new.

I was kinda looking for a reason to leave Capital One anyway. I'll keep my credit cards (my credit is terrible, but I have two unsecured cards with them, and I've had them for a hot minute; they're the oldest open lines of credit I have), but they converted all of their branches here to "cafes" right after I moved here. Meaning if you need a transaction that requires anything that an ATM can't do, you're hosed, unless you want a cup of crappy coffee or want wifi for your laptop (they can print a cashier's check, but they charge an obscene fee for them). I don't get the point of their "cafes" - it's like an internet cafe from 20 years ago, with half a dozen ATMs shoved into a corner. They still have branches in DFW, but when I went to the "cafe" (thinking it was a branch) down the road after losing my debit card, they specifically told me that people with 360 accounts can't do jack poo poo there.

Edit: AI alcoholics, advise me. I've been drinking 2-3 beers nightly for a while. Like a couple years. I like beer. I thought I'd build up some kind of need for it, but on Tuesday nights this semester, I teach a class that goes until almost 9:00pm. When I get home, I have zero desire for beer. I just drink water and have some foods and go to bed.

Is that normal? Does it take drinking a larger volume on the daily to become dependant? Or am I just not inclined to dependency?

I'd expect a little difficulty falling asleep for a couple of weeks, at the absolute worst. 2-3 isn't really enough to cause much if it's all in one sitting, for most people, unless they're pretty light.

Your body will tell you (via anxiety, sweats, hand tremors, etc) when you've got a physical dependency. For some people that's as little as 3 to 6 a day. A lot factors into that - sex (females metabolize alcohol slower than males, which is why OMG BECKY WHITE GIRL DRUNK is a very real thing, except it's not just white girls :v:), weight, body fat percentage, overall metabolism, overall health, age, medications, race, etc etc etc etc.

I'm at a much higher amount per day than I'd like to admit, and I do get shaky/sweaty/anxious if I go without. But my bloodwork always comes back aces, I have plenty of energy (so long as I get at least 6 hours of sleep), and I'm physically active, so the primary damage is to my wallet. I've switched to cheaper poo poo with lower ABV in hopes of weening myself off. Not malt liquor cheap, more like Lone Star :barf: cheap (a 12 pack is :10bux: at work..)

I've always had a high tolerance to alcohol/benzos/narcotics. Combine that with an alcoholic father and having to go to AA and outpatient rehab after getting busted with a gram of weed in college (seriously?) and it really makes you consider if you have a problem. At one point they had me convinced I was actually addicted to marijuana which in retrospect is laughable.
Fortunately/unfortunately I've known enough people with real dependency problems to know that I'm not one of them. I just know that I like booze and unfortunately I have to drink a ridiculous amount to get drunk.

I have a high tolerance to benzos, but that's more because I'm prescribed them. And same, my father was a heavy drinker. He was sober for about 25 years; today he'll have a glass of wine or a single beer if he's out with friends, but AFAIK he hasn't been drunk (and I'm sure my stepmom would slap the face off of him if he did get drunk).

I've been to inpatient rehab for alcohol (after an ICU visit while in DTs), AA, all that fun stuff. Never got busted for weed or any other drugs (somehow); there was one point where I really couldn't get through the day without a lot of weed. I still smoke weed today, but it's not a daily thing. I'll take a small one hitter with me when I'm out riding and hit it occasionally, but otherwise I'll smoke once a week or so at home.

When I picked up my pre-owned ride this past April, I just decided I was going to finance through my credit union before-hand, and got pre-approval for a car on a dealer's website and got my interest rate and payment. My credit union is pretty major in this area and has several branches, so I wasn't surprised that the dealer I went to works with them (as does the dealer I work at) so I could just go through the dealer and still keep my CU, BUT the finance guy tried really hard to push me to use whatever random rear end financing institutions they were probably getting incentives from, and got kinda pissy when I wouldn't budge. Just made sure to check over the deal paperwork and confirm that it was what I got from the credit union on my own. Glad I didn't, because the day after, my loan popped up underneath my three other accounts with my credit union on my banking app, and I can just transfer my payment over instantly whenever I'm checking my balances and poo poo without having to download yet another app.

re: all the alcohol chat, I never drink (alcoholism runs rampant in both sides of my family), but from my perspective it doesn't seem like any of you really have any of that kind of relationship with alcohol, you just enjoy a few beers, shots, whatever, and use it to have fun/unwind. One of my relatives (I'll let them remain somewhat anonymous lol), can't even walk past a bottle of wine without pouring a glass (two glasses will get her drunk) and will proceed to consume every last drop of it available, whether it be half a bottle, or 5, and I think everyone is doing better than that :D

I don't do drugs either (surprise, I'm boring), but if I did, it would be weed. I could definitely stand to mellow out some (ok, a lot), but with my job I can't afford to ever be in a non-sober state of mind. As far as people who over-do the weed, I might have to fire one of our employees (also my best friend, gently caress me), because if he's awake, he's high, and it's impacting how he does his job. I'll also echo what Kozmo Naut said, take care of yourselves and find ways to manage your stress. I wouldn't admit this to anybody I actually know in person, but I don't manage my stress for poo poo (making my terrible posts on this forum is surprisingly helpful though), and I'm rapidly heading for a mega breakdown. Being on call 24/7/365 sucks rear end.

For some lighter news though, I have a brick of cerrobend on the way and I'll get to play with molten metal soon :clint: Also, everyone should go visit Scotland. I'm of Scottish heritage (I'm a Robertson) and have a great deal of fun dressing up as a Highlander for the Renaissance Fair every year.

My new-to-me CU will let me just bring a check to the seller (dealer or private party), though they do want to know what they're financing (and obviously they want the title).

The dealer I went to is apparently famous for refusing to disclose any details about the loans. They were next door to a BHPH lot I checked out - I almost left the BHPH lot with a 2.5 Jetta 5 speed - but it smelled like wet dog and the AC didn't work. Low miles for its age, and it drove well, but it was dirty as hell (and AC not working). They promised to call me back once the AC was fixed, not holding my breath. The upside to the BHPH lot is they were completely transparent about everything I asked (including saying all of their cars are purchased sight unseen at auction, but they do have a mechanic on staff to check them out and make repairs). Even told me "we don't check credit, it's all in-house financing at 18-24%, but we report to all 3. Your down payment is 20% of the sticker, we only do 24 month loans with no early payoff penalty." Nailed every question I had with just asking "what kind of financing do you guys offer". I only dropped by the Mitsubishi dealer out of curiosity, and only planned to be there 15 minutes or so.

Got a lot of bad news at the end of September. Chest x Ray on my wife came back with some really troubling poo poo. Right side of her chest, none of the broken ribs have even attempted to heal from the accident on Christmas years ago. Nodules in lungs and a possible mass, could either be stage 3 or 4 cancer worst case scenario, or active TB best case scenario. Either way she won't be able to be an NP and will have to drop her course. Thyroid is 4x the size of normal and is very nodular. Spinal shift around c2-c3. Dislocated collarbones from the ribs. Partial diaphragm paralysis. A lot of Neuro issues that all point to MS/myasthenia gravis/possibly Cushing's.

Getting a specialist to deal with anything just leads to a lot of fingerpointing and "it's not my problem, it's that other specialist's problem". The only person being proactive with treating symptoms or ordering tests is her incredible GP. But we are getting her a referral to my Endo who is possibly the best practitioner I've ever met. She listens, she talks it out, she's fantastic at tuning her explanations to your comprehension level. My last appt she told me I was a perfect diabetic, then we spent the whole visit talking about my wife. The summary of her words were "bring that bitch over here, I don't give a drat what insurance says. I'll bully the gently caress out of the LabCorp manager down the hall until they get whatever I need to run to figure this out covered under insurance."

But we are slowing moving forward. Regardless as to the news we will be ok. I got yet another new/higher paying/less stressful job. The girlfriend has been incredibly supportive of everything and is such a big help. Got a new cat, she's a lovebug. Not having money problems or car problems. Have a place to live. Outside of the medical poo poo we all love our lives. It's just been a lot of medical poo poo. I am hopeful. Truly.

I'm incredibly grateful to you folks for reading this. I'd probably have a worse time of it all if I didn't have a space I could dump my brain for a moment before I get back into caregiver mode. Starting therapy back up in a week and a bit so hopefully I'll do this nonsense less. I know it can't be enjoyable. But I appreciate the gently caress out of y'all.

I didn't drink for a week a little bit ago, and I noticed I was about twice as quick lining up screws on the little electronic controllers I test and repair frequently at work.

At least I guess I'm not where I was a year ago where I was waking up from blackouts with my hands destroyed and obvious evidence of having tried to off myself at some point, when a fifth of liquor was a light night for me. Kinda worried that I'm backsliding into that area, I was sober for 3 months after I caused several thousand dollars in damage by blacking out while taking a bath with the water running.

So Meatpimp, I think you're okay drinking wise, some people are just like that, they like a few drinks in the evening and that's it, my mom's been that way for 40+ years, and I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen her tipsy. Some people get one drink in them and then more drinks seems like a better and better idea until they physically can't drink anymore.

Enjoy your overdraft fees + payment cancellation fees + bank service fees + they somehow accidentally cancel both payments and now you're late on your mortgage fees.

I just had an issue where a young man came out to locate some water pipes for me (my property provides water to 4 others, it's a shot-show) I paid him the fee the company he works for their amount in check, and wrote him a separate tip, because he was communicative, smart, and went above the basic level if service they offered, super pleased with him all around, I would've tipped him cash, but I had none on hand.

He calls me up the next day (last friday) and tells me that his car has been broken into, can I stop payment on the checks? I say of course and call my bank, turns out it's loving $31.00 to hold a check, what is nowadays a loving single click on the computer, so now I'm out $62 for a couple of stupid crims breaking into a hardworking professional's van.

I should have played hardball with those fucks and told them "no thanks" when they told me the price, when they offered to overnight me a debit card for $25.00, I said "lol no" and they were all like "ok! We'll do it for free because you've been our customer for loving ever!" I bet the same poo poo woulda happened.

I did Auchentoshan as part of my stag do with a tour followed by a tasting session and it was fantastic, I'd really recommend it if you like single malt.
We followed up the distillery with a trip to the Dry Gate brewery which was also great.

Non-alcoholic stuff to do in Glasgow - the Tall Ship is a cool old boat which has been restored and turned into a mini museum. There are a few museums about so tripadvisor is good to discover stuff. Also make sure to take a trip to a Blue Lagoon chippy and order a Pizza Crunch which is half a battered deep fried pizza (Best enjoyed horribly hungover).

Edinburgh is chock full of things to do and is pretty just to wander around but something I found last time I was there was "The Real St Mary's Close" which is a neat old street which which was built over the top of and preserved with dwellings going back to medieval times.

A word of warning re: alcohol and driving - the drink/drive limit is 0 so we did Auchentoshan by taxi.

Scotland chat

For our 15th wedding anniversary, I took my wife to Scotland and England without the kids. While we loved England, Scotland was where the real magic happened. The west coast especially was INCREDIBLE. I could disappear there tomorrow if given the chance and never think twice.

We spent several days on and around Loch Fyne, and drove through Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, and it was amazing the entire time. Castles on small islands in the lochs and up on windy desolate bluffs, waterfalls coming right down next to the roads, distilleries, awesome people...wouldn’t hesitate to gently caress off there for an eternity.

I made the mistake of checking estate agents whilst in the little town of Mallaig. I found a loving CASTLE for sale for like £90k. Admittedly it's tucked away on a tiny island with access only by boat but it's a loving castle. For less money than a tiny single room apartment where I am currently. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't thinking about moving up North.

On alcohol, I've spent too many years drinking too much and now I'm paying for it. Now I'm trying to find new addictions which as a byproduct of diabetes I have to manage my diet more and make good balanced food.

Someone here posted their little crush on Claire from Bon Appetit on youtube. I too have now joined the Claire team, but holy poo poo man crushing on Brad with his antics both on her show and his own stuff. I want him as my brother in law. Such a fun guy.

Drinking chat.

I thought I was an alcoholic for years. We used to drink 5-6 days a week, just because. It did a ton of physical damage and I am still paying for that. But when I broke that habit I had no real after effects, no actual signs of addiction. And now booze has little to no allure for me. But I've seen it destroy too many people close to me. If you think you have a problem definitely get help, there's no shame in it at all.

Pip-Pip old chap! Last one in is a rotten egg what what.

2 beers and I'm going to regret the morning after. A poo poo load of rum or whiskey? No problem*. It's like a dad superpower.

* I lied.

I have that problem a lot too. Have two or three beers over the course of a couple hours and wake up feeling hungover the next day.

Pound a ton of beers and liquor until 3AM? Wake up at 7AM, have a can or two of White Claw and a coffee and I'm good to go.*

*Offer does not apply 100% of the time.

E: Also, thanks for the Scotland recommendations everyone, I've copied them all down. Feel free to send more!

Well what's attached to a leash that it made itself?
The punchline is the way that you've been fuckin' yourself

Just drink a big glass of water or two before bed after said beers. I never drink more than a couple and always have water. No issues generally. Yeah, you'll have to piss at 4am but you probably already do anyway. :v:

Found a few photos of the trip from Fort William out to Skye. Of course photos never do justice to scenery...

This was on the road out of Fort William towards Skye

Eilean Donan Castle (Highlander castle)

The above is a location shot for Prometheus, the crack on the right most outcrop was where the cave was where the paintings were.

It really is fantastically beautiful in the highlands. It may just be my favorite place in the whole world. Schwarzwald is a close contender.

That reminds me, we got to see Castle Aaaaaaaargh (really Castle Stalker), which was pretty cool. Only from a distance though, but I wish we could have gone there and inside.

Claire is absolutely fantastic and Brad is like a big golden retriever puppy, always so enthusiastic and supportive and happy-go-lucky. They have amazing chemistry on the show. He's like the perfect slacker big brother.

My favorite BA episodes are the ones where Brad and Matty go noodlin' for catfish. Matty is so out of his element, but he goes along with it, because how can you not just go along with Brad's antics?

Thanks for this, I'll look these up. So far we have two days in Glasgow, rest is quite up in the air but something to do in the city is always great.

I'll look into that, my friend is more into history than arts, although she did once take me to see the soviet space shuttle Buran at a museum so I guess anything goes.

Thanks for the heads up, but where we come from, the law is already the same so we know to not drink and drive.

So Texas was cool but I am very happy to be home. Our trip wasn't really a vacation so we didn't have much time to relax. Texas Goons, your food options are heavenly but the highways are nightmares. I don't think I could ever live there.
