It might be better to think of the US troops as well armed human shields.

It's a hell of a stretch to call this non-interventionist when it's a NATO country with US made weapons and we've basically agreed to whistle and look the other way while they massacre the Kurds.

I mean you can preach anti-interventionalism all you like, but we've already been aiding the Kurds and used them as our defacto foot soldiers in Syria. Saying "welp we're done here, good luck fuckers!" and then leaving the Kurds at the mercy of your way more powerful ally is not a principled anti-imperialist stance. Just the opposite, in fact.

My ethnic cleansing statement wasn't rhetorical. Erdogans spokesman said that the invasion would allow for Syrian resettlement and would "correct the demographic shift".

You know...it all makes sense now, why Turks get so upset when you mention Armenians. They didn't genocide or ethnically cleanse them, they just 'corrected the demographics'.

all the training, billions of dollars in arms and equipment, and the salaries paid to SDF soldiers was probably pretty helpful even if it came with some strings attached.

It kinda did with the Gerald R. Ford's EMALS catapult system when our big wet boy said "we're going back to steam" and the Navy leadership just kinda shrugged it off

Considering the kurds pretty heavily disarmed a lot of areas as a compromise with the turks, at the request of the US, it would maybe have been helpful to give them a headstart on preparing for war.

The US official opposing Trump are doing it because they want to help foster a more easily controlled ethnostate in the area than Turkey.

It looks like they're just redeploying to get out of Turkey's way. So there's no way to justify this as the US pulling out of Syria or anything. This is all to gently caress over the Kurds specifically. Trump admin is 100% complicit in Turkey's crimes.

I get the sentiment because when seemingly everyone in the media and the political establishment in america lines up against something it should be normal to be suspicious, but I suspect the reason why a bunch of these ghouls are mad isn't because Trump betrayed the Kurds, it's that he did it at the wrong time.

nonetheless, it's important to realize that the kurds are pretty good and one of the most underreported stories in the past 6 months is that Turkey ethnically cleansed Afrin and started settling all the white helmets who had to flee syria.

What even happens to NATO if Turkey frags a bunch of are troops? Do we actually article 5 them? Would the GOP actually crack enough from the neocon movement to move against Trump?

nothing. the diplomats smooth it over. allies fragged americans in the past. more explosively, americans destroyed russian merc forces last year that attacked them and nobody cared that putin lost control of one of his irregular assets.

Well the reason for that was exactly the fact that they were mercs and not 'official' Russian forces - it gives Putin the leverage to say: "They weren't working for our state in particular", if he so chooses. Had that number of casualties ocurred to uniformed men, you don't get nearly as much leeway. But it'd depend on the severity and context too. Smaller cases are routinely covered up, to be sure, but yea...something like hundreds or even thousands there is no way that does not turn into a political thing where an answer has to come in more than just words.
