vincentpricesboner posted:Theres gotta be a way. You could still make it part of a federal platform to demand it from each province otherwise you would stop any new funding to the province. You can't do that. One possibility I've heard is to require that all companies doing business with the government (which is pretty much all big corporations in the country) be required to meet certain standards (this already happens with, for example, not being allowed to do business with the government for 10 years if caught bribing Libyans to build torture prisons in the desert). I've heard the government could theoretically require that all companies doing business with them pay all workers a minimum of $20/hr, effectively imposing a $20/hr minimum wage for all employees of those businesses even outside industries subject to the federal minimum wage. This should then have a knock-on effect in the rest of the labour market to raise wages across the board. I've never seen, like, an expert opinion on whether this is possible though so I don't know if it's a real option. What would be even better than something roundabout like that would be nationalizing the commanding heights of the economy and having the state pay people good wages to do important jobs that they're already doing for peanuts because all the profit is being hoarded by vulture capitalists, and also robust workplace democracy laws making it very easy for workers to purchase or otherwise take over and operate their own workplaces as co-ops, eliminating or mitigating the predatory nature of the capitalist workplace in enterprises that did this (with support from the state, naturally). Those are far more radical steps than having a minimum wage though, and that's why I could never be Prime Minister.

Using a cute workaround to try to indirectly legislate in an area of provincial jurisdiction is probably one of those ideas that sounds better on paper than it would (also on paper I guess) to the SCC. That's the kind of poo poo that flies in the US but doesn't really in Canada.

If only there was a large tax cut close by that we could study and see the economic impacts of and if it actually did increase jobs. Oh that's right the veneer of it being for the economy is thinning against actual data that shows it's just tax breaks. Oh and a hilarious side note that i haven't seen yet is now all pension plans are managed with an Alberta first mandate so when the recession hits because of this bullshit the public sector workers are double hosed because the minute they go unfunded is the minute Kenney cuts them loose like he did his concept of social contract.

Also something about forcing a blockade of trade goods from the Pacific to the rest of Canada (the fact that goods to Alberta could also be blockaded was not acknowledged)

Starks posted:But I also think that part of the reason is the demographics of Toronto have changed. I’m in one of those ridings that used to be orange and was expected to flip back, and over the past 9 years its been flooded with young suburbanites moving to the city and pushing out lower income residents. Rent for a one bedroom has doubled in my building since 2011. Tiny townhouses with crawl space basements are selling for 1.2 million. The ndp is rapidly losing their base in Toronto. I suspect this is why liberals will never do anything about housing prices. I thought sort of "millennial yuppie" trend would start to impact the NDP ridings around East Vancouver but it hasn't. Due to various municipal policies forcing development into a limited handful of neighbourhoods, Mount Pleasant in Jenny Kwan's Vancouver East Riding has seen tons of new expensive condo developments and there's been significant demographic changes. Nonetheless she roasted the competition. Ditto Don Davies a neighbourhood over, even though the trend of wealthy West Side homeowner Vancouverites selling their expensive west side homes, shifting East and pocketing the change is so prevalent people talk about the "Dunbar Diaspora". I don't know what to say other than maybe incumbency is incredibly tough to shake in an election that's not an obvious "Change" election like 2015 was.

Most people have no sense of scale or geography either and are totally innumerate and don't understand how economics work. Albertans genuinely think their province is an economic juggernaut that's been bled dry by NEP's and TAXES and if they were free from the parasite country they've been carrying for decades they'd just galt's gultch it with their incredibly oil wealth. BC's just a bunch of condo flippers and soy boys, a few old stock canadians with guns and pickup trucks could bend the province to their will and besides they'd be welcomed as liberators by everyone but the Vancouver Elite.
