why restrict ourselves to Salem? the practice of burning witches started in the late Middle Ages and was a manifestation of class warfare. same thing with homophobia, nobody gave a poo poo about it for much of the era. same with aggressive anti-Semitism: the Augustinian view of them was "let them live among us as living examples of their error," which changed into "they are active agents of Satan and must be converted, expelled, or killed" with the coming of the Franciscan and Dominican orders. it's not a coincidence that doctrine came to be around the same time that gentile merchants were accumulating wealth, and they naturally saw Jews as their commercial rivals the entire late Middle Ages was a result of the Catholic Church reacting to Europe's contact with the outside world for the first time in centuries

I keep typing and deleting jokes about talking about Salem being voodoun erasure, because they all seem kind of reasonable when I think about it actually. This guy, *points at Leslie Lee*, he's good. He's good at this.

James Rice has a really good critique from a Native American history lens but it's a pretty great piece of American history even with that. I can't comment on how dry because I found the mortality charts riveting, I am not to be trusted on that front.

I was a 3rd year undergrad, if I re-read it after having gone through phd comps I'd probably also find it riveting. I should re-read it, honestly.
