yeah the interview prep isn’t like a trick or something, but also it kind of comes down to what the favorite (not banned) questions of your interviewers end up being

I mean a lot of banned questions are banned for being too similar to questions from leetcode or whatever so that might work to your advantage 🤷‍♀️

For a career transition play up the transferrable skills, don't mention the ones that don't, be honest about previous roles/titles, and most importantly: explain why you're "passionate" about what you're trying to transfer to and why you're going to be good at it and "add value".

Some companies are just going to want specialists so don't be disheartened. You'll probably need a lot of volume to land the first gig.

what if you already landed the first gig and are looking at landing the second? cuz that’s where I am. is it still that much in play? I imagine it’s case by case but I’m trying to get a feel for it generally

Sounds like your career is no longer "transitioning" but has already done so

if you have a year or two of experience then youre pretty much good to go

imho this is also the threshold where putting a GPA on your resume starts looking increasingly weird

Progressive JPEG
Feb 19, 2003

also if you have less than a year at your current place you should have a good explanation why you'd left

less than a year looks like something went very bad at first glance, but there are still totally valid reasons for cutting it short such as "fraud", "they lied about the position when hiring", "everyone was laid off" etc

more than a year is at least "eh i stuck around a bit to see if i could make it work"

I like when recruiters call me up and act interested and then just ghost me for weeks and call me back with "oh sorry I went on vacation and then I had a meeting one day oh btw that company is no longer interested, how about this help desk position in Idaho?"

you literally just posted the job description of a recruiter.

I had one cold call me yesterday from o e of the local gigantic IT staffing firms and I hit her with “what can I expect for responsiveness? other recruiters who’ve cold called me never get back to me except with entry level jobs and that’s a waste of everyone’s time.”

her answer was basically that she was different than all the rest. uh huh.

i distinguish between recruiters and head hunters. head hunters are the ones you want to keep working with while tossing recruiters aside. unfortunately it's impossible to know which is which until you've worked with them a bit. the obvious first tell is that they have actually read your linkedin profile and open the conversation with something very much up your alley. not always a guarantee they won't be shitlords once you respond but it's at least a good sign

and if something is not quite up your alley they have a pitch read for how your actual experience would translate into the position and why you might be interested in it

any sweden goons know if 700k SEK gross is a nice salary for a DBA with 9 years of experience? iirc this should be for amazon

(asking for a friend)

personally i think it's a really nice take home in one of the nicest scandinavian countries.. maybe even a bit high maybe?

I'd say no. If it's in Stockholm then it's gently caress no. That city is expensive as balls. After taxes that would be in the ared of 440k SEK yearly which isn't bad, but certainly not amazing.

For comparison my starting salary for a danish company in the north of sealand was 633k SEK with a masters degree in a semi-related field.

interesting, thanks a lot for the insight!

just out of curiosity and not to be an rear end in a top hat...

if the applicant is indian or from south east asia in general, do you think this will change the number?

my gut feeling says that yes, even in reasonably egalitarian scandinavia there's still a lot of discrimination like that. however i come from post soviet eastern europe so i may be projecting my own country's issues

I'm in Stockholm and I make 600k as a python/javascript/sql web generalist at ~100 employee company with ~7 years of experience*, and I turned down an offer at a different place for 660k when I got this job a year ago because I didn't want to work in adtech. An actual specialist role with longer experience should pay better than that, especially at bigco.

e: *and no degree. degrees don't make such a big difference here though once you get 5 years of experience or so, unless you have a phd

Probably yes. Even disregarding racist reasons, the labor market is much more limited for people who don't speak Swedish, even in the IT sector. Might be different at Amazon though. If they do speak Swedish though then that changes things, at least in white collar jobs.

thanks! this gives a good idea of what to expect roughly

although i am clocking at around 700k SEK, 65k eur in the middle of paris at 13 years of experience, as a senior developer and hmmmmmmm

thanks! i don't know about language skills but i was mostly worried about the racism part

my understanding is that they are applying from outside the country, so amazon might be betting on importing their cheap(er) labor. in this case asking for something that a local might ask, may end up breaking the deal (unless there is just a shortage of DBAs in sweden)
