The thing that bugs me about people calling videogame writing bad is that implies that television and movie writing are much much better.

I liked the original Deus Ex having a kind of mech game health setup where your arms or legs could get taken out with penalties depending on if it was one or both limbs. I think it was just a binary 0 health or not thing per limb though.

The ending of Bioshock: Infite was pretty cool, in that very moment. Sad they hosed it up with the DLCs, though.

I 100% agree with this. Some of the most pathetic implementation of escorting I've ever seen was in The Last of Us and Uncharted 4. The devs clearly couldn't get your AI partner to behave during stealth sections so with a few exceptions they just turn invisible to enemies. I was shocked at how amateurish it was in TLoU and laughed my rear end off when the exact same thing happened in U4. Let's be honest, Colombia was a dumb idea. Even hearing the first initial description of Rapture in Bioshock made it sound like a wonderful setting. A city under the sea seemed somewhat plausible but mysterious. City in the sky? Boring and stupid.

Bioshock infinite came out when most games and especially FPS had stories that were so loving bad that I often wanted to outright skip them. I’ll always give it a few points for making me care about what was going on even if it wasn’t perfect. Of course the Last of Us came along just a few months later and met the same criteria while being much better imo.

Its interesting to think of them as a direct comparison because looking back I remember Infinite much more fondly than The Last of Us. I enjoyed and finished both which is a rarity in itself but nothing from TLoU really sticks in mind, maybe because I played it on the normal difficulty which I've heard isn't the ideal but it was just a competent game latched on a to a heart tugging storyline. Infinite might be a "worse" game but it had more memorable moments, Columbia even if it was stupid and dumb was memorable, Comstock and Booker and the plot-tie ins are ridiculous but they stood out. I remember setups like the Lutece twins, the battle at Wounded Knee and the old-time versions of Beach Boys, Creedence and Cindy Lauper songs which really helped nail the setting. When people say The Last of Us I just think of pushing crates into water.

Just saw that Vampire The Masquerade - Coteries of New York has been released on Steam. As Bloodlines is probably my favourite RPG ever I decided to give it a shot. So far it's just a typical chose your own adventure/visual novel, but it seems cool. You get to pick between a Ventrue, Brujah and Toreador fledgling who much like in Bloodlines gets screwed over by the local Prince. This time in New York. This is a cheap game but the visuals are nice and the writings decent so far. The ambient soundtrack is also very much Bloodlines. I'd say this is deffo worth a look if you don't mind the format. Found a trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBKpDSce2I4

If I'm being honest, that's probably the main thing. Also, I'm proud that my dumb statement about gamepads and keyboards was controversial enough to start a pages-long derail, I've done my duty to the thread *salutes enthusiastically* A lot of it also comes down to me liking single players a lot more than multiplayer. Single player shooters are easy enough to beat with a gamepad, even when you up the difficulty. So there's no need to use the less comfortable method. I refuse to play games at a desk, that's way too much like work Malcolm Turnbeug posted:Trying to use a scope in pvp or whatever with a game pad makes me feel like a huge clumsy idiot but if a game has enough emphasis on mobility and positioning over aiming they’re usually more fun with a game pad even if I’d probably be more competitive with a mouse and keyboard. For example Titanfall 2 feels way more fun on a game pad even if you can’t aim for poo poo so I still hook it up for single player This is well said. Some games are a bit harsh in how they do targeting which make gamepads difficult, but they just feel so much better in terms of movement and the unified whole I also have a wheel for racing games, that's one thing the gamepad is poo poo at (although still better than a m/k I would assume) veni veni veni posted:I've been using a mouse regularly for the last few months for the first time in my life, and I'm somewhat converted, but I'll never use a keyboard to play games (unless it's an RTS or something). Just an absolutely awful feeling way to play a video game unless you have stockholm syndrome from using one for years. Mouse and one handed controller is pretty fun for FPS though. I'd still rather play almost any other kind of game with a controller. Mouse and one handed controller you say? That sounds... quite interesting. I hate using keyboards and don't love the mouse since I play on my couch, but a mouse plus half controller sounds interesting. I'm picturing the half controller like one of those switch controllers that can separate, just a stick for movement and a trigger/shoulder button. Is that what you're talking about? e: nevermind it's this right? I want this. I need this. And not in my rear end. Well, maybe in my rear end. But mostly for playing online shooters where everyones a sperglord. e: that's a vr controller? I'd like one that just is wireless USB and works the same as my xbox controller on the pc
