How 'bout them hawks news huh!

You know...on itself it's a funny joke. The empathis in "Do you have ANY questions?" somehow make it more funny to me.

But as part of the overall arc, it's ofcourse incredibly asinine and over the top.

I assume Gunther’s mom heard about it because nobody in this strip can stay more than three yards away from anyone else, and the only restaurant in town is Luann’s Parents’ Tax Shelter.

In any other story, a parent being worried about their kid practicing safe sex wouldn't be weird.

But given how this is a) mama's boy Gunther being confronted by b) Gunther's mom, who c) looks exactly like Gunther, in this d) comic strip where every character is mentally a loving high school freshman, it's pretty creepy.

But also, he's in college. This isn't even his first girlfriend. He even went to another country to be with his last girlfriend. Of all the unmarried main cast members of Luann, Gunther is the one least likely to be a virgin. (If he is, that's Team Evans' naivety talking.)

She waited until now to try to have a safe sex talk?

ETA: Credit where it's due; I AM glad she's telling him this in a supportive and loving way, not being judgy that her adult son might fornicate

Weirdly enough, I am actually interested in the developments of Mark Trail over the past few days. I even preferred James' original "art" in yesterday's strip to his normal Xeroxing. Honestly, if the entire strip was like the past few days it would be fine. Not good, but fine.

"Eskimo" is generally considered to be derogatory. It's an Algonquin word used to describe them, not the word this group call themselves. These tribes call themselves Inuit or Yupik, depending on where exactly you're talking about.

Put it this way. I'm thirty six and Canadian, and I was taught when I was eight that "Eskimo" is a rude word because the Inuit do not like being called that. It's maybe not exactly obscene, but it's a little racist.

Calaveron posted:

There are a number of hypotheses about the etymological origin of the term, the most popular being "snowshoe-wearer." In some Algonquian languages, including Cree, the term for "eater of raw meat/uncooked things" sounds a bit like "Eskimo."

Another issue is that the group of people historically clumped under the umbrella of "Eskimo" includes both the Inuit as well as the Yupik people, so "Inuit" as a blanket replacement isn't always an entirely clean fit. As with any area where language and taxonomy is imposed by colonialism, it's a big mess!

Ok, I guess that is not widely known in Europe (speaking as an expat with contact with many European nationalities). I think that people just say eskimo and cannot imagine that it is considered problematic.
