Currently the US has about 400 missile silos and even if they had 15 missiles per silo I doubt they would be getting off too many volleys before the enemy missiles start landing. I can only assume that Russia has a lot fewer silos with even shittier missiles.

I think they would send as many as they possibly could against actual nuclear missiles silo. As well as defense planning related facilities like NORAD. Obviously New York and Washington DC. But after that and the US counter missiles that would undoubtedly hit the Russian missile silos and government facilities. I think the nuking would be over. They wouldn't gradually sweep the entire US with missiles because they would need to get as many hits as they could possibly get on key targets.

yeah ok there are some pretty terrible assumptions here but I'm just going to link the Cold War/Airpower thread so you can do a little light reading on the topic of Armageddon in your own time

You think reality is a circle of salt around my brain keeping witches out?

I know we had the discussion last thread about the whole "Mad Max future" genre of political cartoons, but even when they don't go "lol Trump will be our mutant dictator forever", I've grown really tired of this whole "the future is cartoonishly bleak" thing.

I mean, it's not like the future isn't bleak, but cartoonists like this have been putting out "Today, it's [bad thing Trump did], in 5 years it will be [exaggerated version of bad thing Trump did], in 10 years it will be [picture of bones with nukes going off in the background]" every week since Trump got elected. Enough lefty cartoonists do this exact format that it has all started to blur together for me. It really comes across as lazy by this point.

That's just one part of the triad. Even assuming all the bombers get knocked out before taking off (which I think some are on perpetual circular flight ?) there's still a lot of boom lurking in deep, dark waters - and those won't bother targeting empty silos. That also goes for Russia natch.

Tbf it's tough to evaluate the positions when there are obviously unfamiliar movement rules that allow gold to move to midair and blow other pieces off the board

And I'm sure a whole bunch of new animals are just going to sproing from the ground after them, it's not like there's a well-known Australian animal whose population has reproductive issues that really doesn't need a bunch of them incinerated and a huge swath of their habitat destroyed right now.

Nuke chat reminded me that after the Soviet Union fell and we got access to a lot of their sealed records it turned out the Soviet Union had a more accurate map of the town I was born in, North Tonawanda NY, than we did. Both sides had enough nukes to start going after small unimportant towns after it got all the big targets just to sow more chaos. It's not like there was anything strategic in Hiroshima.

The army headquarters in charge of defending southern Kyushu (where the initial Allied invasion of Japan would've taken place if the bombs weren't dropped) was headquartered in Hiroshima along with two other major command staffs. It was also an important port and transport hub.

Like New York and Washington are probably hosed in WW3 but the mid sized cities are probably just going to see some fireworks in the distance and then continue as normal. Just not have people travel too close to the radioactive ruins for a few years.

Homework assignment; look up what a MIRV is and repeat the process on nukemaps. Realize that all the nukes involved are some variation of that.

This is what I wanted to post. There was also a declassified map in here somewhere that showed the targets Russia would strike in a retaliatory attack for mutual assured destruction. There was a 500 nuke scenario and a 2000 nuke scenario. IIRC the 500 was all that was needed to obliterate our cities and infrastructure. The 2000 nuke scenario had them blowing up our silo sites in an attempt to minimize the number of nukes we'd be able to retaliate with.

Pretty interesting to see and pretty bleak.
