Yup, this is basically the same story as my UK beater BX, paid £100 for it, yanked it out of a side alley, did some basic stuff to it and off it went. Best value for money car I will ever buy. When I'm not around, my dad drives it over his Porsches.

Also you're welcome :v:

The best beater I ever bought was a $500 1987 Toyota FX16. 5 speed, 4A-GE 16v motor. I knew it had a marginal clutch and headgasket when I bought it, and when it finally blew I pulled the motor out to redo the whole thing, my first time pulling a motor :allears: (detailed documentation). Little car was an absolute blast, but it met an untimely doom when I misidentified a red caution light for a yellow one and plowed an ambulance (gently caress protanopia :argh:)

The worst one was an $900 Geo Prism, 5 speed with the 4A-FE. Fucker consumed oil at a rate of a quart per hundred miles. I needed *a car, any car* for work so I grabbed it (I should have bought my buddy's 1.6 5sp Sentra for $1600 but I'm dumb). It lasted about 7 weeks until it spun a rod bearing and I sold it to the junkyard for $200. I'm pretty sure I spent more on oil than what I "saved" buying the Geo.

I Want To Believe.
My best beater was probably my Mk3 Granada. 2.0 DOHC with a manual.

£125 with an MOT, ran it for about a year and then sold it for £100.

Worst was a 1.0 Citroën AX. I needed a car, now, within walking distance of my house, for a maximum of £150.

I blew the headgasket in spectacular fashion on the M1, hosed the engine bay down, nailed it back together with a new HG and gasket goo (ignoring that it had snapped a cam pillow block with the severity of how it let go), and continued driving it until I could afford a replacement beater. It must have been making something like 15bhp at that point, and had a top speed of 30mph on the flat.

Any old timers still have an AI bottle opener? I've had mine on my key ring since they were made (I think it was 2003 or 2004? Time kind of blends together.) Can't count how many beers this thing has opened. Could probably stand to give it a clean, now that I look closely at it...

My last good beater was a 97 Kia Sephia, based on the Mazda BG platform with a Korean built BP. The thing was fast, I would always have my foot in it and it would always give me 30mpg city consistently. Got it for $800 because the shifter was "bad" but all it needed was some new linkage bushings. I would have kept the car longer but in true Kia form, the interior was literally disintegrating so I got rid of it for a Camry.

I bought my 2000 Avalon for $800, non-running. Just needed a starter. The seller had some drunk driving issues and it was a bit scratched up, but polished up fine. After all maintenance caught up, new tires, new shocks/struts, etc., I'm still into it for less than $2k.

But that's not my favorite beater, nor my only car bought from a drunk driver. My favorite is a 1988 Mazda MX6-GT. Seller lost her license and had tickets to pay. (Bonus corner of my UrS4)

A new fender, headlight, Probe swirlies, my first "real" spray gun paint job, and a Yugo hood scoop later and:

Not only my favorite beater, one of the best cars I've ever had. I ragged on that car mercilessly for years and it never hiccuped mechanically. Rust got to the point where I cracked the windshield jacking up the front corner and... :(

I need some help with a lease you guys

my dad leased a 2019 BMW 330ix last summer here in Indiana. Payments are $500/month and I believe he put $12k down. My mom is on the lease as well.

My dad drove it maybe twice before going to the hospital and he passed away in November. The car has maybe a thousand miles on it.

My mom doesn't want it. She has a new Lexus and enjoys that and the BMW reminds her of dad too much. She wants it gone.

We turned in the BMW to the dealership last night. Gave them the keys and everything. I think we did this prematurely though... I called BMW financial services (who the lease is through) and they told us we have three options:

1. Turn in the car and pay the full remaining balance of the contract (like $12k)
2. Turn in the car and pay a balance based on the current value of the car (I don't really understand this one but it sounds like it's roughly equivalent to 1)
3. Go through a third party website and see if anybody will take over the lease

Has anybody been in this situation? I might crosspost this to a finances thread if I can find one that might be applicable. It's a great car and I'd take it over if I needed a car but it's a bit salty for my budget and most of the tech drives me nuts.

For me, #1 doesn't make sense to do, it's just throwing good money after bad. #2 I agree... sounds similar to #1. #3 sounds like the only non-financial bloodbath option. Plus, since it has so few miles, it'd be attractive to someone that wants to drive more than current lease mileages allow.

FWIW, talk to them and see about option #2. What (I think) they mean is basically paying them the difference of the residual value of the car and what's owed on the contract. For example, I wanted to turn in my Corolla lease several months early and they wanted the remaining balance of my payments (basically option #1) because it's a Corolla, it's Blue Book Value after 3 years was less than what my contract was originally for. A friend had leased a Tacoma and a WRX which hold their value really well, so he was able to walk away from both leases early with no penalties because they can turn those around and sell them for more than the lease contract was. Or something. I'm definitely not a auto finance expert but that's my understanding of it.

You shared it with a dick.

He did say Mom's on the lease so I think they're stuck with those options. Still I'd consult a lawyer. Or at least a lease agent who knows the rules but is not on BMW's payroll.

My favorite beater was a '70 Volvo 142s that I helped a friend buy for $600 in 1989. A year later (on a foggy night) she drove it off the upper level of a parking lot, down a grassy hill, and nose-dived into another car with it. I bought it as-is for $50. 40 minutes with a 2 lb sledgehammer and $90 in junkyard sheetmetal later, I had a straight, running car. Drove it for almost 4 years.

Your mom being on the lease is going to limit the ability to deal with it via the estate.

I think option #3 is likely the best financial option. $12K down is a healthy downpayment. I suspect someone will be willing to pick that up. Also be sure to see what the buyout is at the end of the lease.

yeah they basically want to be made whole on the RV at this point in time, and honestly if he put 12k down :wtc: on a lease you're probably not tooooo far off of it.

but as i said in the other thread, read the paperwork closely and tell us:

1) what the actual terms of the lease are (mileage, payment ex taxes, payment inc taxes, months)
2) what the money factor and residuals are
3) what the money down was
4) start and end months

that will help us give you a better answer

My ‘79 RX-7 cost me $300, uh, 20+ years ago? It’s currently getting rebuilt. Th ‘90 RX-7 cost $500, and took a little reassembling before I could drive it, but was a reliable daily for about a decade, then I got the Jeep, then the Crown Vic, and stopped driving the ‘90, so I traded it for my ‘87 AE86 Corolla. The Corolla is worth a fair chunk more than $1k, but technically...
For that matter, the ‘96 Jeep Cherokee was only $600. 4-banger, so it wasn’t fast, but at least it had terrible fuel economy. It was reliable, and transported a fair amount of stuff in the back.
The Crown Vic that replaces it was $1500, so doesn’t count. There is the $600 2003 Outback, though, if you don’t count the flight to go get it and the fuel bringing it back from AZ to TX (thanks Morethanjake32!) It’s a good car.

It highly depends on how many bells and whistles are on the car. It's easy to add $10k in options which roll into the lease. BMW and MB are bad about offering lease subsidies only on cars with specific 'most popular' options, so that's a factor too. Also, most people that lease don't realize they have the same levers to pull in negotiating as they would if purchasing.

It's a $54k car for what it's worth. I think it's actually like $10k down and the rest is taxes and the first payment. He paid 12k cash when he got it but only 10kish was an actual 'down payment.'

he posted the purchase price. his dad got hosed, but that's neither here nor there at this point. the money factor is unreal on that lease.

the good news is that if you ask BMWFS what the payoff is right now, you'll be able to leverage that silly amount of cash down to be within spitting distance. your dad covered half of the depreciation with that down payment. A lease is just a mechanism to finance depreciation. Some speculative, not fully accurate math follows.

$23k total depreciation to cover over 36 mos
$10K in the car from the down payment
$3K in payments (assuming six made so far, and you paid taxes up front)

that means you've covered $13K of the total $23K in depreciation. Depreciation curves aren't straightline but I bet you can get get out of it for something approaching free through BMWFS, which would be my strong preference over any of the lease swapping sites.

Paid $600 for it 5 years ago and have been daily driving it (well, splitting the time with the suburban) ever since. The only work it actually needed was the AC (did myself for ~$250) and a valve body in the transmission a couple years ago (~$120). Everything else I've done to it has just been for fun, it's seriously the best car I've ever owned.

They're known enough that people sell them beaters that needs minor fixes cheap so they can make a couple bucks. It's pretty nice to see and really surprising when you see the stupid stuff the rest of the group does.

My favorite beater by far was the 1990 Nissan Hardbody I paid one of my professors $100 for, and he felt bad asking that much. This was in ~2008 maybe and this truck had been a farm truck in Wisconsin since day one. By the time I got it the bumpers were replaced by 2x4 lumber versions and the exhaust broke off on the test drive. Massive rust holes everywhere but it always started up, even when 40 below, and never left me stranded. That was great truck, wish I could find pictures of it.
