lilbeefer posted:What is the best actual evidence that can be given to a tankie to show that whilst China isn't a bad country necessarily it's not all unicorn farts and mapo tofu Probably the big thing right now is the growing anxiety among the Chinese middle-class that Chinese society is trying to wring them dry of what little wealth they have, and that they have no way of getting the government to help them. They refer to themselves as "chives", because they can be harvested for the prosperity of the powerful and the elites of China. https://www.cnn.com/2018/11/03/asia/china-leeks-economy-trade-war-intl/index.html https://elephant-room.com/2018/08/27/the-story-of-chinese-chives/ Connected to this, Huawei became a target of outrage recently after a former employee wrote online about being imprisoned for asking for his severance pay. This came as Huawei was trying to drum up domestic support for their CFO while she awaits extradition to the US. People pointed out the hypocrisy of Huawei bemoaning the supposed injustice their CFO faces in her mansion in Canada while also imprisoning their employee for asking what he was legally entitled to. This played into the general "harvested chives" anxiety, adding credence in the minds of middle-class Chinese that the rich and powerful can get whatever they want and are willing to sacrifice ordinary Chinese to maintain their wealth. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/dec/02/huawei-under-fire-china-employee-detained-eight-months https://www.nytimes.com./2019/12/04/technology/huawei-china-backlash.html I think what's important here, in terms of convincing your tankie friend, is that this is ordinary Chinese expressing their frustrations about their problem with Chinese society. It can't be argued away as outsiders trying to impose "foreign" concepts on a supposedly-different Chinese way of life. It also lays bare just how much the Chinese government promotes and defends the interest of the rich and powerful, even at the expense of the average Chinese people it supposedly represents.

Because in CCP/tankieworld, declaring an international health emergency is an implicit admission that pandemic management under the glorious Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era has not been up to snuff. That's also why the WHO leadership has been practically bent over backwards to emphasize how China has been doing such a good job with this outbreak, just a darn shame, could've happened to any country really, etc etc etc

The BBC says it's about 20 ~ 25% gets severe symptoms like pneumonia as this is what is going to flatten the medical system and when that happens the death rate to going to shoot up. It is quite different to the flu where you either die because you are almost dead anyway or you become the equivalent of walking wounded, go home, rest up, drink lots of fluids, drink soup and stop infecting everyone. It makes flu season manageable despite how wide spread it is. Lining up to get into hospital. loving nuts unless you're dying that is the last place you want to be. Go see a GP. Had to argue with this gently caress idiot who has no idea how statistics work saying this is just another flu.

For example I asked him if he thought that the WHO declaring a global emergency was just media bullshit, and his response was something along the line of "90% yes, and not just any media hype but weaponised media hype, sparking a whole new era of sinophobic" Yeah, that makes sense. The problem with a lot of leftist literature is that it's so focused on what America or western organizations have done that it ignores other countries using the same tactics. The authors kind of assume we're going to fill in the blanks, because it should be really obvious. You cant account for every idiot or person who hasn't really thought through their new ideas though. Some countries (basically China, I can't think of another example here, maybe North Korea?) take advantage of this, and so here we are. I would ask him what he's read lately. But I dont know how you're gonna follow up on that without having read whatever, too. Edit: With the very little you've told us I kind of suspect your friend is just really new to these ideas and 50/50 shot he comes out of it on his own. You gotta be a special kind of idiot to come to the other conclusion. And if that's the case I dont know if it's worth your time. Most leftists put him in the same camp as reactionaries and liberals, or maybe worse. BrainDance fucked around with this message at 10:43 on Feb 1, 2020 |

https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/01/27/dont-blame-bat-soup-for-the-wuhan-virus/ This doesn't really come together into a cogent thing, viz: quote:These prejudices can fuel fear and racism. As the Wuhan virus spreads, the Chinese as a group are more and more likely to be blamed for its incubation and spread. In countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia, where there are already clashes around ethnic Chinese, those sentiments could turn nasty. In the West, especially under the Trump administration, it could fuel both government and public prejudices.
