The other thing about Max Payne (more specifically MP2) was that they just oozed loving style. More so than almost any shooter of that time I can remember. The comic book cutscenes, the storyline, the entire Monica plot line, the level layout... Max Payne 2 was just so stylish. gently caress, I love that game.

mp2 was so good, although i hate to admit the thing i enjoyed the most about it was it got rid of those loving dream sequence mazes from 1. what a pain in the rear end those were

Speaking of releases, DOOSK is out! This gameplay mod transports Dusk's arsenal, mechanics and (optionally) player movement into Doom, giving you infinite new worlds to prove your worthiness in while you wait for the real Dusk's SDK to take shape.

I feel like Max Payne was the game to popularize the meta-narrative in video games. Adventure games have been doing it as a joke since the early 80s and MGS2 addressed the 4th wall as a real thing within the context of the game, but after Max Payne you started seeing more “am I in a video game?” moments.

I remember the "Worst thing I could think of" hallucination from MP1 more clearly than any other moment in the series. I think you have a point.

I finished Blood's Cryptic Passages expansion this weekend. Got to say, Sunstorm sure did love placing cultist at right angles of doors so that they could hit scan the poo poo out of the player when they walked into a room AND where hard to get when using dynamite. I can except level design that allows for one or the other, but both makes the game slow and tedious.

Oh well on to Shadow Warrior.

Do yourself a favor and skip the Build engine one, and play the 2013 reboot (and NOT it's sequel). It has all the corny humor with a lot less overt racism, is actually fun instead of frustrating, and... has a good ending? As fun as shurikens and samurai swords are, I don't feel the original game has enough merits to revisit.

Did Flying Hog lose a bunch of writers between Shadow Warrior 2013 and SW2? I still can't wrap my mind around how they went from one of the best written FPS games in a long time to sub-Borderlands garbage in the span of one game.

SW'13 has a lot of good lines but the one that had me in stitches is when Lo Wang has his heroic haircut and he's like, "Yknow, like Travis Bickle" and the demon buddy goes "Oh so Travis Bickle is a hero now??"

Looking at Mobygames... looks like the lead writer and VO director on SW2013, Jan Bartkowicz, moved on afterwards to do cinematics and marketing stuff on The Witcher 3 at CD Project RED. So I guess that's that.

I wonder what Flying Wild Hog is up to... it's been a few minutes since SW2 and they've apparently doubled in size since then, so they're clearly up to something...

In other news, Bethesda's running a big sale on GOG to mark Wolfenstein: The New Order, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood and the Dishonored series getting DRM-free releases. Might be handy if your Id game collection has a few holes in it...

Shadow Warrior 2013 was a fun game and had a decent plot but the actual shooting was awfully bad as in weapons were pointless compared to the katana at launch and took them a while to patch that issue to not play 90% of the game just moving around with the sword.

Shadow Warrior 2 nailed the movement and shooting, even if it had some looter shooter mechanics (they added some kind of Diablo 3 rifts and improved loot later on) but the writing was bad.

They're both good games but even after patches SW13's shooting feels kinda bad and SW2 can be drat fun in co-op, shame that they couldn't combine both games because I'd give SW13 a third go with even better shooting as I did one at launch, one with patched weapons.

Eh, I never felt the weapons where bad in SW13, just that the sword was so much more fun, especially with the upgrades. It's still a very solid game regardless, and people should play it. Just don't play the Build Engine game, it really is not good. Just a mountain of unfun bullshit, the demo or first level oversells it greatly.

the shadow warrior reboot sequel's gameplay was a lot more fun on a moment-to-moment basis but you can kind of directly see the festering wounds where whatever story they had was ripped into bits and left bare. it probably had more to do with time constraints and certain people leaving than anything else

"The world is a hellish place, and bad writing is destroying the quality of our suffering."
As somebody who has enjoyed every Shadow Warrior game, I'd say give them all a shot. With regards to Build games, I prefer Blood over Shadow Warrior, but Blood's probably one of my all-time favorite Classic FPS games now, so it's kind of a moot point. On its own merits I think the original Shadow Warrior is a good FPS.

On "Hard", I found Shadow Warrior 2013's weapons to be generally anemic until you thoroughly upgraded them and even then, I found a lot more success investing in the sword and various skills/abilities ("Divider of Heaven", "Circle of Iron", "Wing of Crane", and then the various improvements to their damage, plus anything that can improve your survivability/restore your health during combat). It's just a lot easier to tag a cluster of quick, spastic enemies with a "Wing of Crane" shot than to try and plug them in the head with the Rhino or soak them full of SMG bullets, especially when you're fighting a dozen opponents. The shotgun and rocket launcher are appropriately punchy with some investments, though.

I've said it before but my biggest issue with SW'13 is that it just drags on for too goddamned long. The length wouldn't be such an issue if the game had a better cast of enemies, but it doesn't, and by the time you're halfway through the game, you're just dealing with various permutations of the same 4 or 5 enemies (the little demons, Shield Demons, Warlords, Shamans, and Flying Bastards) ad nauseum.

Shadow Warrior 2 has its own set of flaws but the increased variety made it more interesting to me. The story is a special kind of crap and there's too much granularity to the various "gems" that will result in you accumulating vast piles of +1% and +2% weapon damage/capacity/fire rate modifiers. Still, I ended up spending a lot more time with the game because I found the basic gameplay loop to be more satisfying than 2013's.

Well, the USMC have a serious problem with rapists and sexual harassers in their midst, so the rumor seems highly plausible to me.

But seriously though, it's ARMA.

MP1 has the aesthetically cool but pain in the rear end maze and late game enemies are like Uncharted 1 levels of crack shots with explosives everywhere.

MP2 has the best pacing but has two levels built entirely around escorting someone because it's the mid-aughts and that's how you designed levels back then.

MP3 still looks good but adding physics to the diving made it really difficult for me to get into.

So the best Max Payne is *drum roll* Alan Wake.

e: I just got a late runner up, it's The Punisher game. Not bad.

i actually really enjoyed the overall gunplay in alan wake. it was solid and the weapons felt like they had a surprising amount of feedback, which made capping the taken pretty fun all throughout. american nightmare's gameplay was even more refined, but it's a shame about the rest of it. kind of hoping for an actual alan wake sequel, so here's hoping the alan wake dlc for control spurs development on that.

Justice for Daisy

One of the reasons the airport fight in Max Payne 3 is so good, besides the music, is that's one of the few parts of the game that you have multiple firefights without a 20 second cutscene in between.

I think the loading during cutscenes in MP3 also lies? Like, if you have the game in an SSD or a HDD you still have to wait until a specific point of the cutscene to be able to skip it, it doesn't matter how fast it loads in your system.

GUI
Nov 5, 2005

Max Payne 3's development was a mess and the game is held with duct tape more than the average video game. It was also Rockstar's guinea pig for their seamless in-engine cutscenes in GTAV/RDR2 which they pretty much admitted shortly after release. The loading just happens to be there to avoid the scripting getting broken.

There's a trainer for Max Payne 3 that allows you to forcefully skip in-engine cutscenes and all it does is make it so you get stuck in a room more often than not.

The movement and shooting is better, but the level design makes it all feel like busy-work. Just going back and forth between three maps over and over again and then the game's over. There's no sense of progression from the design or the narrative, so it ends up being pretty hallow. If I want a game with good shooting but no forward momentum, Devil Daggers is way cheaper.
