hard counter posted:there needed to be anti-force stuff in the EU so i can super easily forgive the force-sloth thing Here's the thing, though: The Thrawn trilogy was the start of the EU. It literally didn't exist until those books. (Which is also why the books are so fondly regarded, incidentally)

Stravag posted:Only if you ignore splinter of the minds eye and like a half dozen other books according to this atleast https://www.orderofbooks.com/characters/star-wars/ There were 7 plus the movie adaptations, but those were pretty contained bits of material compared to the Thrawn trilogy. There's also a pretty stark gap if you look at a chronological list. Last book put out in 83, then the Zahn books start in 91, and then there's a whole snowball effect where there's 6 books coming out in 94 and then there's 21 books in 97. If you poke around and look at more ancillary material, the old marvel comics, the Droids and Ewoks cartoons, and the TV movies were all done by 86, and 91 was when Dark Horse got the license to publish new comics as well. Even the videogames started to branch out into more original material in the 90s rather than just following the movies like they used to, and there was a weird synthesis between the books, comics, and games all creating their own material and using eachother's material to support themselves, but rarely calling back to the 80s material that wasn't in the movies. And at least 80% of it all is either terrible or mediocre, but 80% of anything is garbage, that's just the reality of fiction. Also: Some EU fighters for the new page. Stravag posted:Only if you ignore splinter of the minds eye and like a half dozen other books according to this atleast https://www.orderofbooks.com/characters/star-wars/ Splinter was weird as hell though - it was written as a low-budget sequel idea in case ANH tanked, and there's a bunch of wonky poo poo like a budding romance between Luke and Leia, and the absence of Han and Chewie (because Harrison Ford had only signed on to do 1 movie at the time)

OTOH the old Han Solo Adventures trilogy and the Lando trilogy were a ton of fun. The Solo trilogy was published, like Splinter, between ANH and ESB, and the Lando trilogy was published right around RoTJ's release. They're good clean goofy fun, pulpy space pirate stuff.

Yuzhan Vong: Good idea, terrible execution Anyhow the mechanics for fighting coralskippers were pretty tailor-made for video games (their black hole-based shields absorbed nearly all ship-to-ship weaponry, and the ships themselves were impervious to laser fire - but if an X-wing managed to land all 4 laser blasts in one volley, it opened up the shields to proton torpedo strikes.) Imagine a world where Lucasfilm wasn't focused on the prequels and took a risk on a NJO starfighter combat game

SlothfulCobra posted:But you know what? There's in-world ships that are literally bolted-together pieces of garbage, and they're great. The official name for these is "uglies". I really love them because they really reinforce the idea that all these wild and crazy bits of a ship really each serve a purpose on their own. I mentioned this thing earlier. The Deathraven was some pirate's dream machine and was an absolute beast in combat, being a purpose-built super fighter built from factory fresh machines rather than old garbage welded together with Space Bondo. It was also really cramped and uncomfortable in the cockpit and he couldn't stand to use it to travel for any meaningful distance.

ARC-170s knockin down droid fighters, Y-Wings murdering everything they can land bombs on, escorting waves of gunships down. And gimmeee coop,. Everyone could be a different Jedi in a fighter with some Force abilities. You go up against a CIS fleet.

This design doesn't exactly feel starwarsy to me, but I like it. That looks like somebody tried to reduce the poly count of one of those Romulan ships.

I don’t think anyone has posted anything from Halo yet, which in my mind has some fairly iconic ships like the pelican. My personal favorite is the YSS-1000 Sabre from Halo Reach. It’s basically strapped to multi-stage detachable rockets to escape a planet’s gravity and get to space, where its main role is orbital defense. For sci-fi, it feels like a plausible near-future kind of idea without too much in the way of exotic engines and weapons.
