I'm still not sure how I feel about the ending. I'm writing a review of The Return for my book and am just stuck on "That ending though..."

I'm new to Season 3, and following along. I'm relatively cool with spoilers but if you could avoid ending spoilers I would appreciate it.

I can't imagine coming to Fire Walk With Me without watching Twin Peaks. To add to it's general 'Twin Peaks'-iness I accidentally watched some of the missing scenes first before I figured out what was going on. Very confusing, not recommended.

The original investigation seems so completely disconnected from the Twin Peaks stuff that it's kind of a jarring transition.

I think the nudity was fine but the whole second half of the film just feels intensely skeezy and uncomfortable and not particularly fun to watch.

The beginning of The Return is really delightful and I'm looking forward to watching more!

Would you be my new best friends?

I still think Dana Ashbrook overacts the scene where he sees the picture of Laura, but it makes how good he is through the rest of The Return stand out all the more. Also I love that he's in charge of monitoring/being on the lookout for drug trafficking coming across the border, I guess he's got the proper background!

I loved the Wally Brando scene the first time I saw it and love it even more now, never noticed the picture of a younger Wally with Andy and Lucy before but it's very sweet, and I love how they're so proud of him and constantly looking to Sheriff Truman to make sure he's giving his approval too.

The vast seascape into infinity and the weird eye-less lady* and all the frames out of order is amazing, I assume that the initial 15 panel would have killed Cooper if she hadn't flipped the switch and burnt off the excess power to get it down to 3? Still not quite sure if the woman in the room afterwards is a different version of that same woman or not, but I did find it interesting that the latter woman talks backwards in the same manner as the Lodge Residents, but the eyeless woman speaks in breathless gasps while stuttering through jumping frames. But of course everything pales once Dougie shows up and just immediately steals the show, I remember at the time loving him but desperate to see Cooper come back, now I'm just so happy to have Dougie to enjoy again :allears:

The scene with Mr. C in the prison is incredibly creepy. His voice is off, he sounds like he's trying to run off a script he prepared in a vain effort to seem more like Cooper (slightly easier when he first got out of the lodge, he's basically forgotten how 25 years later) and the way he ends up just repeating an entire section really adds to the artificiality of it, I love how uneasy and perturbed both Cole and Albert are. Also man I'm so glad Miguel Ferrer got to be in this before he passed on, it's so wonderful seeing him back.

* Does she end up being Diane later in the season or am I just conflating two characters?

I am pretty sure it was scripted. In the making of, Michael Cera looks at Lynch at expects him to do another take, but Lynch is like: Nah, we good.

She is. But it stays unclear, if it is the real Diane, another tulpa or another black lodge entity. But that's another discussion.

In a recurring theme, things happen twice or more.

What is there? 15 Coopers? :downs:

When Bad Coop enters the convenience store, a woodman will pull a lever too.

Does the lodge want Bob back so bad, that they guide Dougie?

The show seems to kind of pass the torch to him in a number of ways. First, he does the whole Cooper monologue about having to pee, and then he breaks down crying like Andy. I actually like his acting. It's like he's so unprepared for his own emotions that he flubs the following lines.

He's probably also a bit loopy from nearly getting returned to the lodge. I mean, look how much it messed with Cooper.

Quote of the week: "What the hell?" (Gordon Cole)

Some effects in the Return look goofy, but that endless purple ocean is goddamn gorgeous. I also really like the effect of Cooper getting dragged towards the oversized exposed wall socket. That little puff of smoke is what really sells it. Also that moment when his shoes pop off.

It's interesting how the suburban residential development serves as a quasi-slum for white people. No one actually seems to live there. Jade uses the house like an hourly motel for customers, the woman across the street is popping prescription opioids to celebrate her kid's birthday, and there's even a homeless shopping cart lady wandering by at one point.

Somehow, that's still more luxury than Doctor Jacoby has as he's seemingly traded in his fancy office for a run down trailer in the middle of the forest. The casual report of a kid overdosing on drugs in the classroom is also pretty chilling. If anything, Twin Peaks is now worse off than the rest of the world.

On a different tangent, I love that people at the casino seem to treat the cameras like these all-seeing eyes that prevent them from doing things they want to do. It's lifeless technology taking the place of actual morals or police. The old lady flipping off Dougie for example is only prevented from grabbing his money because of the presence of a camera. Even the casino owner is watched by a camera in his own office.

Could I get a screenshot of
- the purple ocean
- that balcony with Cooper on it
- the lady with the slashed up face, please?

I can picture it very vividly just by reading your post. The little animation loops everyone would do, crappy frames within frames to cut down on file size, and extremely unceremonious game over screens involving Mike yelling at you for screwing up.

In fact:

Honestly the 90s FMV scene was clearly inspired by Twin Peaks(Harvester and Dark Seed 2 are incredibly blatant about it) so I guess it goes both ways

edit: Kind of surprised that there is still artifacting on that screenshot of the purple ocean. I always assumed that was caused by streaming.

I feel like it's a conscious character choice that he made, because Bobby has always been such an emotional person. So he's got these Laura related emotions all bottled up for 25 years and then randomly he's confronted with them without any warning and so he's not really in control of the outpouring of emotion. A subtle, more nuanced performance in that moment would've been un-Bobby like I think.
