In fact, most authors usually don't write for a living because they don't get paid enough. Buy the goddamn books.

I'm in the process of pirating 80% of my books but because I don't want to haul them when I move I just found out one of my cookbooks has a note inside the cover to my mom, I guess it was a regift. Schadenfreude! Also Chuck Tingle books make a great white elephant. Oh the blushing faces you'll get!

Where’s that comic that’s likequote:“More people are using the library.” I thought it was a Family Circus strip, but Google doesn’t turn it up so perhaps I’m wrong.

I'm of two minds because gently caress the way the publishing system is set up, authors should get more. I wanna tear that poo poo down but I don't really think stealing the fruits of someone's labor is the best solution, and in general people only think it's ok bc they devalue creative work at the very same time they're taking it bc they want it.

Someone bought and donated a physical copy to the library. The Internet Archive will lend scans to patrons over the Internet. If more people want to read a book than there are bound tomes of that edition on the shelves, they have to wait.

Fun fact: libraries killed Blockbuster. Seriously. Video rental stores went out of business in large part because public libraries started carrying movies and letting people check them out. And libraries are free for residents.

I mean poo poo, even pay-per-view threatened Blockbuster. It was never long for this world.

Libraries are great and I love them. In the move to digital we should've created new systems to pay creators that don't involve tracking every single individual purchase just to pay them a portion of a cent for it, but for some reason didn't and so here we are.

My dad's poor as hell but he's been able to write 2 books about the Civil War balloon corps since he retired that were purchased by about 150 balloon nerds and it makes him and them happy. None ended up in libraries or stores aside from about 10 at some civil war museum gift shop in SC.

Around here libraries record all borrowings and give a proportionate yearly sum to authors in compensation. Libraries also basically keep niche genres like poetry and specialist non-fiction alive because they make their material purchases on criteria that emphasize cultural importance alongside popular appeal and thus guarantee book sales to small publishers who focus on important but niche books. Libraries are very cool and you all should support them!

I can't waste this opportunity to shamelessly plug my first gold-rated thread ever, it's an A/T about libraries. https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3872210 It started mostly about funny/bizarre stories about the oddball patrons I've dealt with, but now it's kind of a general A/T for both patrons and library staff. Come on over, it's free for everyone and no one gets paid! (The schad will be on me on me when no one comes over.) fake edit: and Pope Corky's mis-post would not be out of the realm of possibility there. Us library workers have seen some poo poo. Quite literally, in some instances.
