I haven't had Tim Hortons in over a decade, has it really gotten that bad?

I know it was never good but Luckin was 'recoil with disgust' bad. It tasted like a fart.

Tim Hortons has gotten really bad. The last time I got a cup it was some unholy trinity of weak, watery, and somehow still super bitter. Imagine if you burnt the poo poo out of a pot of coffee, scraped the leavings off the bottom of the pot, put that in a coffee filter, and brewed coffee with it.

Quite possible - I haven't set foot in a Tim's since around the time the Brazilians bought them.

Probably the same thing I think of the 🗿, 🕋, or the super Japanese stuff like 💮, which is nothing and then occasionally "oh yeah, that one exists" when I scroll by it looking for something else. There's so many emoji now that we forget the existence of most of them most of the time.

Yep! There's a few other Islam-related ones scattered around in the library, notably hijabi faces. And outside of the emoji block Unicode has other stuff like the ayah marker ۝ and the word Allah ﷲ

Well, quite. China and the US just seem to be near different ends of a particularly grim scale.

The US is obsessed with saving markets and will sacrifice lives to do it.

Most other countries fall somewhere in between.

So sure this virus came out of China. But if it had come out of anywhere else, the results would probably be similar in both countries.
The reason this is relevant is, due to a bunch of factors, epidemics are unlikely to become less frequent. Quite the opposite.

This misses a big thing, it wouldn't have started in America. The conditions to spawn such virus is rare outside of China. Another is the doctors give drat even if the system doesn't while in China if you give a drat the police shows up with a cover up play book. The ground game is so different saying it would have produced equivalent results is absurd.

Not denying though the talk about grinding people up to feed capitalism is horrifying and a face palming display of ignorance. Doing it to save face has absolutely no utility making it a far worse.

I'm inclined to believe that TCM originates in folk remedies, but they never tried to figure out why the folk remedies worked, and instead relied of hearsay, appeal of authority, and bolstering the claims through placebo effect and confirmation bias.

Entirely possible the tree bark was willow tree, which is known to have pain relieving effects. The problem for TCM is the true/false absolutes: part of it is bunk, part of it is real, but China will never separate the two from each other. Equally, dismissing all of it whole denies insights which science has proven accurate, but then that evidence is generalized into all of it being right.

The problem with TCM goes beyond this, it gets promoted to drive Nationalism. It's why WHO got pressured to include it. Even the folk medicine angle is mostly BS as it got push by Mao after they hosed over all the doctors leading to another wave of death. They sort of corrected some of it by using barefoot medic like Africa trains a bunch of basic medics to cover things that don't need a full doctor but they left in the TCM because it's cheaper than real Medicine.

BrigadierSensible posted:

I am not a big fan of TCM, and fully acknowledge the quackery and bullshit that comes with the "traditional" practices of extracting bile from tortured bears, or boiling some poor endangered animal in it's own piss to alleviate the erectile dysfunction of middle aged Chinese businessmen.

But here is my TCM adjacent story of how it kinda sorta worked.

Because I am a privileged middle aged white man, I have gout. So about 7 or so years ago when I was living in Chengdu, I got a particularly bad attack of gout. It hurt like a thousand knives of fire with every step. And the reason it was particularly bad that time was because the gout had joined forces with a blood infection. ANyway, at the hospital, (apart from the obligatory saline drip that they put me on), I got some real medicine, (probably random antibiotics), and they also sent me to the TCM window where an old man in a labcoat ground up some leaves and bark and poo poo and gave it to me with the instructions to make tea from it and drink it twice a day.

To my mind, the tea helped a fucktonne with the pain and swelling more than the pills or the drip. So that is at least one anecdote in favour of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

It wasn't the TCM or the placebo effect, it was the saline drip which is pretty drat funny. You literally needed to drink more water to help your kidneys flush out the uric acid. There is actual medication that help cut down on acid production which you likely got.

But seriously, getting gout.
